  • Are these fair or should they be banned? Either way lets find out how to maximise your qualifying potential with the most effective way to warm up the tyres on that all-important out lap.

I hot lap from the off but never so I lose back end. I note turns when the front tires dont turn in. I then continue to practice braking earlier and trailing longer and or drop down a gear at those turns. Its qually so car is light. Cancels out cold tires. You just need to hit the corners correctly. To begin with you want the tires working best for Q lap 2. But sticking to this mentality you'll find your first lap get much quicker. Never over drive the tires. If the track is hot take it easy on out lap.

Interesting data collection. I also was looking at wear % through the tests. At what point does wear start to become a factor with lap time, as the laps with steering full lock, with burnout have a 4% drop compared to the 2% with just pushing the car 90%.
I know that the intentions of this is for qualifying laps, but how much could it be a factor for full pace laps, where pace is limited? I would think that there may be more value on steering past the slip angle, so long as you can do it safely while pacing, but dont push it too hard to hurt the tire wear...

It will depend on the car. In the F3 the tyres will survive a whole race pushing at 100%. In an endurance race such as GT3 you can definitely benefit from stretching the tyres for double or triple stint lengths. In those cases it's usually a case of protecting the highest wear tyre, often FL at Silverstone or Watkins Glenn, or the outside rear at other tracks. For those it's usually about 30% life that the tyres start to struggle. If you're likely to reach that point then it's better to save the tyres rather than scrub or lockup during warmup.

Thanks. Only thing is that you probably want to start session over for every take because ambient and track temps can rise pretty quickly

True. It shows the principles though. I hope you find it useful. It might also be worth trying this again in something like a gt3 car that has live temperature readings on the dash.

@@jinglesmcgee7256 It doesnt show in replay/spectator mode but it does show live for the driver. We just did the 24hr race at Spa in the Lamborghini and were using this to tell when the tyres were up to temperature.
