  • A beginner to vehicle restoration, bodywork, mechanics and TH-cam, I take the first step to introduce, document and restore my Series 3 Landrover.
    Follow my journey as I attempt to save and restore this Land Rover with no real mechanical or in fact restoration experience or abilities.
    Welcome to Forbes Overland. In this video I introduce my Series 3 Land Rover Restoration Project and demonstrate my complete lack of practical knowledge, skills and ability in both mechanical work and filming/editing videos.
    Whether you're a Land Rover enthusiast, seasoned car restoration professional or a complete beginner like me, this video will hopefully resonate either by reminding you of how you started out, or by giving you comfort in knowing that there is another complete novice out there just trying to learn.
    What You'll Learn:
    1. I waffle on a lot
    2. I should do a practice run before filming
    3. I'm a certified petrolhead but without any practical petrolheaded experience.

    If, by some absolute miracle you actually enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up, and if you have any knowledge to share I'd be hugely appreciative if you could leave a comment below, and don't forget to subscribe if you're mad enough to want to follow along with my progress.

    I also have an ex Military Series 3 that I saved, although I didn't film any of the process. I've learned quite a bit over the past couple of years and I've gotten to the point that I could probably fix just about anything on it. It is a learning curve for sure and the more you do, the more confident you will get.

      Hi Dietrich, thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it! Thats where I would love to be (to be able to fix anything on it) I did a few very simple jobs on my Puma Defender and really enjoyed it so when the opportunity came up to save this, I just couldnt say no. Although I am already beyond the limits of my knowledge!

      @ForbesOverland  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey! Thanks for taking the time to comment, really appreciate it! I couldnt agree more with the steel rims. When I got my 130 the first thing I did was to remove those alloys and replace them with a set of Wolf Rims. In the next video (when I upload it) you'll see that I managed to source a set of original Series Steels.

    Mr Forbes, please stop apologising.
    Land Rover is in your blood, that is clear for us all to see, you are an enthusiast even though you deny it.
    That 109 has had a lot of chassis patches, probably a good idea to put a new galv one under it. However, be careful squire for not all replacement Land Rover chassis are the same quality and the same can be said for the bulkhead too. I loathe seeing black on Series Landy, they look horrid. The same with checker plate, awful stuff. Judging by the rear spring shackles, it's a 1ton because those are not standard shackles, they are "1 ton shackles". Another clue is the chassis spring hanger. Door not shutting, worn hinges or a bit of sag in the chassis.
    Don't be tempted to carpet the floor, bulkhead or seatbox. Series Land Rover's leak too much rain in and the carpet then stinks and rots the steel seatbox and bulkhead. Chain link mats are the way and Land Rover repro none glued down sound deadening.
    It's missing wiper motor drive trim, steering column trim and the right ignition barrel. The latter went out of production for a while but someone might have got permission to reman them?
    Looks like it was an ex military Land Rover to me. You can get the history from them such as regiment and other basic info. Just cannot remember how you do that, it been years since I had ex army Landy. She has had new footwells in the past too by the look of it. And wretched carpet. The wipers are either set wrong OR someone has retro fitted a Defender motor and drive gear. That might explain the missing trim. Avoid spacers on your hubs, they will chew bearings away a good bit sooner than normal. Stay standard and look for some wider wheels if you must. Forward Control wheel rims look brilliant on a Series Landy, they are rare and expensive.
    How do you know what I said is good? You don't. But I have had roughly 42 Series 2 and 3 Land Rover's, 3 new Defenders (2003, 2005 and 2009 Puma engine) and 2 Range Rover's.
    Good luck, happy to subscribe and follow your progress young man!

      Jon! I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to leave me such a detailed and knowledgeable comment, thank you! I've taken down notes from your comments for things to look into especially the wiper situation and how they're set. I'm not sure of the direction I am heading with the restoration, while she's absolutely worth saving (arent they all) I think she might be a bit beyond a restoration completely back to factory. Since filming part 1 I have learned that the steering column is from a P38 Range Rover which explains the missing column shroud. I didnt know if it was a 1 tonne or not, and I didnt have a clue how to spot whether it was or not, so thats a great help, thank you! Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed comment Jon, I hope you enjoy my next videos! Cheers Forbes

    steering wheel is a defender wheel front chassis been botched up

    • @ForbesOverland
      @ForbesOverland  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Andrew, thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment! Since filming part one, I have managed to work out that the steering column is from a P38 Range Rover. When I first got the car it had a Range Rover steering wheel attached to it (minus the airbag) but the depth of the wheel was so large that I couldnt fit my massive rotund gut behind it and the old Defender/Discovery wheel was all I had to fit! Yeah, a few people have pointed out the chassis repairs. I'm not sure what my goal is with the project yet, especially with my distinct lack of abilities so a chassis swap might be a bit (lot) out of my depth!

    • @philtowle4683
      @philtowle4683 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Shall follow, good luck. Bit of advice, dont fall down the trap of waffling, keep the narration concise and to the content of what you’re spannering etc at the time. Too many channels put out 20 min + vids and half of it is face in camera waffle. Keep it on point and interesting and you’ll do well.
