    would love to know your opinion on retails vs replicas from a production standpoint. Lots of replica brands claim to be made identically as retail; some even priced the same way. End of the day, I'd like to know how much it really costs to make and if getting replicas is an "acceptable" option.

      That's way more complicated, as replicas go from grading.
      The higher the grading, the close to 1:1 to the naked eye it is.

    • @SuperJolla84
      @SuperJolla84 2 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      They will look pretty much 100% exact. BUT the quality of materials and overall construction will be worse. You might not see it, but you will absolutely feel it when wearing them.

    • @jonathankulesa
      @jonathankulesa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +240

      Some replicas use better materials, and sometimes better quality than retail - You just need to get pointed in the right direction…

    • @barx
      @barx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      @@SuperJolla84 On the contrary, they feel the exact same on foot. On retro products like dunks, Jordan 1s, etc. a lot of materials used are quite similar or exactly the same grade, and today, replica manufacturers have the construction down pretty well - just look at the amount of reverse mocha travis 1s floating around so soon after release. Comparing the retails and replicas they feel pretty comparable, not 1:1 mind you, but 98% of people could easily be fooled.

    What an anticipated much needed insight into the different Dunks! Wore Nike SB Dunk Pros for well over 5 years (1 pair) before they wore out and they truely were near on destroyed, still have them actually. There were so comfortable, hard wearing and to my eye looked incredible. Over a decade later and theyre worth silly money and hard to come by! Thankfully bought another of the same pair (Ice Pink Varsity Blue I think they're labeled) just a year before they started becoming so popular and expensive...for less than £30 might I add

  • @filippo923
    @filippo923 2 ปีที่แล้ว +156

    the SBs did actually improve along the years , cause the insole and tongue padding were some of the first features , along with oval laces and a spare pair of laces that came in 2002 but then around 09/10 some minor changes went on ( in 2006 a dunk mid was added to the line with already some of the feature that were going to be changed a few years after) then in 2011/12 they actually changed the whole build adding heel padding for Achille's tendon and for slippage, the inner construction changed becoming seamless and adding protection for the first 2 eyelets , then midsole was reworked to give more grip , and add more boardfeel on forefoot keeping impact protection on heels
    I believe still materials on early '00 were better but they went back with some better quality in latest releases

    I have many (too many) pairs of SB dunks and a handful of basketball dunks. I find the SB dunks to be infinitely more comfortable than the basketball dunks. I find that the basketball dunks feel stiffer all around. The leather is stiffer and the sole is stiffer and they take much longer to "break in" than a pair of SBs.

    Certain types of foam tend to break down over time, that is, it reduces in thickness as I guess the air cells lose the air. Another common thing with foam is it reacts with material it is in contact with and appears to "melt". There is also the issue (not sure if it is the same as "melt”) where the plasticizers break down. Given the amount of foam in this style of shoe is there any way to measure the life of the foam or information available on the durability of foam? Alternatively, compare the new shoe insides with a worn shoe. My interest is your tests reveal the build quality and materials in new condition. Testing the impact bounce on a new shoe doesn't translate to the bounce quality after say a year of wearing. May be some test equipment that can impart a year’s wear in a shorter period. You have a most interesting channel.

    I think comparing kids versions of adult shoes to the real one would be interesting. Because they are like half the price and the largest kids and smallest adults are basically the same thing.

    ik people have similar answers but the only different between SB bunks & regular dunks is that SB dunks or SB nikes in general are made solely for skateboarding while regular dunks are lifestyle/casual .

    Suede catches griptape and gives more lift for ollies and flick for flip tricks as well as being more durable. Zoom Air is more responsive than Air or Air Max, but less cushioned, and thinner for better board feel. Nice video!

    Pro SBs back in the day had more padding, thicker sock liner, and of course, the infamous fat tongue, on top of the OG designs. The new SBs in the 2020s look like the quality is subpar and incomparable, like comparing chocolate to dirt. Might want to look into Pro SBs, aka the original SB dunk from '04-'07 days.

    My opinion on the “drop test” is that it should rank higher if the bar bounces back less- the opposite of how you rank it. If the bar is bouncing higher more energy is transferred through the shoe or the insole, meaning more is transferred to your foot. An insole that absorbs the energy from the impact would deaden the bounce back. Physicist over here.

    Now it’s gonna be even harder for us skateboarders to get SB Dunks.
    Please do more skate shoes. Love to see which companies are good for skating or are just there for the money.

      How about no, and no?
      You're complaining that this video just made getting SB Dunks harder.
      What do you think will happen if the same was done to shoes from actual skate companies?
      And besides, that isn't Rose Anvil's job.
      The content you're looking for, lies elsewhere.

  • @dizzle1119

    They're hugely different. SB Dunks are made with tougher materials, and they have EVA foam as well as a Zoom Air unit built into the insole. I'm sure you cover this in the video, but I'm typing this prior to watching.
    The SB Dunk deserves to be a highly collectible Nike, because it's a really nice shoe in spite of the drawbacks of being a mass produced Nike.
    The "normal" Nike Dunk should be a $60 shoe that you can buy at any place w/ a Nike account. Seriously. You should be able to buy a "panda Dunk" for $60 at any "Shoe Show" or whatever....ANYWHERE.
    EDIT: That black/grey/gum bottom SB Dunk low is the shoe that I wear "daily" currently. I've been splitting mudholes in that shoe for a couple of months now. Holdin' up just fine.

    NIKE SB has a secondary release for all SB’s to assigned skate shops called “Orange Label” these releases are supposedly a higher tier above the regular sb materials and designs. Would love to see some Orange Label dunk analysis.

    I think the difference when you rubbed on the board is due to the fact that in the first test you filled the grip's asperity with the rubber, reducing considerably the sanding effect for the 2 others.

    • @Gnurklesquimp
      @Gnurklesquimp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was considering this too, flipping the board might be an option next time if the grain is the same both ways, or maybe alternate them very often

    main difference is simply how flexible the sole is, for regular dunks you need a lot of structure and biility for the shoe to absorb impact in your toes, for sb dunks you get a flexible sole that follows the behavior of your toes while skateboarding, same thing with blazers, i have regular dunks for wear and dunk sb, because i phisically cant skate in them since they are too stiff.

    I just bought my first pair of SB dunks in that electric Olympic safari colorway. This is the only video on TH-cam that completely shows and tells all of the differences between a normal dunk and an SB. It’s pretty crazy just how much is different. People hate on Nike in skateboarding but i swear adidas will slap an adidas skateboarding logo on a shoe and call it their SB version when nothing is actually better.
