For all his faults, when acting as king in whatever limited capacity he was given he genuinely did what he thought was best/ what his “father” would do. You kill your enemies you don’t send them to the wall, which he emulated after Robert wanting Targaryen’s slaughtered. He was the only mfer in all of kings landing worried about Daenerys. He was spoiled rotten and a little messed up in the head, but wasn’t above being somewhat normal if raised right.

I personally think power too soon and the combination of an absent father and coddling mother. If I remember correctly during season one Cersei lies about details of the direwolf attacking Joffrey and he tries to tell her that’s not what happened (even though it would make him look better) to which she say the truth is what you make it. So she was literally teaching him to be a narcissist.
