- Gilmour Space Technologies is set to make history with its first ever orbital space launch. The company already has Australian customers signed up, waiting to get satellites into orbit. Bloomberg's Paul Allen and the Australian Centre for Space Governance Chair Cassandra Greer talk about how the nation is mapping out its place in the global space race on "Bloomberg: The Asia Trade."

Australia should be playing a bigger role in space launches. Our government is a still in the dark ages. We need to encourage more home grown space launch capacity and the associated technical industries.
@@dingodog5677 you do realise that Australia was one of the early countries to put a satellite in orbit (1967) and rivalled NASAs Cape Canaveral on the number of rocket launches?
encourage more? as in get the government to give them money? no chance
Management at Gilmour Space Technologies may be fantastic at PR and engineering, but their ability to follow simple instructions regarding regulatory obligations in an environment crossing Indigenous lands, World Heritage areas, and simple things like timelines, calendars, milestones, and filling our online forms in a timely manner seem to be utterly pathetic. They blame the government, shit in their nest, and then complain about the smell. I genuinely hope these blokes mature to the point they stop blaming others for their own oversights, especially when they can't answer simple questions when asked.
The government has done everything possible to encourage and hand hold these rocket toddlers. Allegedly. It must be easier to whinge to the media than do your homework and respect the opportunity you've been given.
When it comes to efficiency, our government is a POS. It's purely the wealth from large scale natural resource exploitation that's the difference between us and just another third world shithole.
@@MatthewHarroldyou must be a government employee if you think that any branch of government in this country is remotely capable of efficiency.
Forget about competing with SpaceX - let's at least catch up with the Kiwis at Rocket Labs to start with.
If you think the FAA was slow - the Australian regulator makes them look positively lightning quick!
I’m surprised this has gotten so far without giving it away to someone else in the world after all our politicians are giving away just about everything replace it with something that will never work like renewables solar & wind imports from. CCP China while rest of the world has given up
Yeah and look at this Cassandra Steer woman. If you invited her to your kids birthday she’d tell everyone to temper their enthusiasm because other people have kids too.
Sending lots of love 💕 and best wishes for Australia's "Gilmour" from India🇮🇳💫🙏

An example of Australia not properly educating its own in favour of importing foreigners to run it. Pathetic!
I can only imagine the current obstacles they must be facing. Good luck mates!
Yeah. Government regulation is more powerful than gravity.
Yes unneded regulation ,allways there to dictate their own power, by technical incompetents, according to the political side hard line . There is power in saying no, none in saying yes, resulting in legal litigation with no end in sight , to the detriment of the builders and the reputation of the country
That useless Albenese governmnet?
I think some companies in Singapore would be quite interested in launching satellites from Australia.
We are not a middle power, we have been hamstrung by politicians .
They will fail hard pursuing this industry in Australia. Too many regulations, and sadly, 5+ years too late. They won't even be able to enter the commercial market.
That has been bought and interfered with Chinese Traitors.
@@Trance_OCE it is going to be easier to launch from australia for particular applications
@@maxgadd No it isn't lol. Rocket Lab already have a good launch site in NZ, why not just use that
@@Trance_OCE wrong. Utterly ill-informed. The regulatory framework is skeletal, minimal and in this infancy of Aussie space efforts ... bespoke and handheld by the relevant support agencies. It is the belligerence and defiance of certain ambitious PR people at Gilmour to shit on their own while ignoring every regulation on land, at sea, in the sky, and finally in space that hamper their own goals. I doubt they'd get Youth Allowance and a Melbourne buskers permit without being arrested for disorderly conduct in any other industry. I'm not criticising their engineering skills or ambitions, but these dudes are nest shitting belligerent wankers at best.
Happy Gilmour...
Lets go aussie.
Do it the same way aussies does in cricket, be victorious.

Sometimes it seems like Cricket is the only thing we're good at.
@@dianafarmer5445 i mean apart from sports i dont see anything excellent about them..
@@dianafarmer5445 Well after the weakening of soviet bloc in early 80s & then fall in 1991, there's no competitor to US & reason is that they initiated the space race first.
& now after many decades some countries have chance to initiate themselves too in space race, so it's a early phase, no need to be good or excellent.
All i meant is that maybe england started cricket first but now they aren't best in the game.
& due to US monopoly in space they themselves are not growing, so we need competitors for growth & innovation
Nice to see more competition in space industry
SpaceX isn’t the only company using a reusable rocket.
She totally forgot to mention Rocket Lab Electron and soon Neutron which is also reusable, has launched over 50 times and is NZ based.
All the best to Gilmour Space and our Aussie mates!
Finally!! Well done guys.
Politicians reading this, please do your best to reduce the red tape it shouldn’t have taken so long.
Australia was the three country in the World to launch a satellite from its own soil, then dropped the ball.
Oddly the vast majority don't know that.
The balls have yet to drop when it comes to Australia and government regulations.
@@AndyRRR0791 Regulations are incredibly important. Yes, bad regulation or over-regulation has negative consequences, and there are many areas where Australia can improve on that front. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater though. Look at the dire outcomes that have been impacting the United States since they've gone down a similar blanket anti-regulation crusade.
@@Sthuont Dire, you say? Has the ocean swallowed them up or something?
Oh big surprise, the government red tape is what's held it back.
Typical Aussie crap.
Who needs seat belts & speed limits??
@@PeterKnagge Yeah, cos they are totally the same thing. Jesus Christ.
Yeah nah... I doubt it. Australia has been involved in space exploration and rocketry since not long after the end of WWII. Bloomberg is a media organisation. Media organisations are simply propaganda purveyors at this point (and possibly always were). The "no regulation is great!" delusion, is just Bloomberg serving its corporatist agenda. Someone else in the comments here has written a pretty unflattering assessment of Gilmour Space Technologies' company behaviour, through what seems to be either personal experience or at least industry knowledge.
the media around rocket's launching from Australia is just part of a promotional campaign by our newly founded space agency, this layer is looking to increase the public's awareness in turn growing the public's will for such industry an allowing the agency to begin receiving the funding it needs to function at standards. the funding it has really received since 2018 is little more then what any non functional agency in its early years, just setting up office an working out everything that is the point of its new existence. don't expect much anytime soon other then small live regulatory pressure tests. best not rush them let them go slow and get it right or watch it fail an become a undesirable burden and source or embarrassment for the nation.
Rejoin the space race, remember in the 1950s at Womora SA was Australia’s entry with blue streak an early hypersonic rocket program.
Good luck Gilmour Space! Shine on you crazy diamond! 🚀💎
Good luck to them.
Over regulating a struggling startup into obsolescence. Hope they can turn things around and actually put stuff in orbit.
Yeah, fire the bureaucrats and get rid of an association that doesn’t support local industry.
Lets not jump the gun. We don't know the regulatory issues. Maybe Gilmour are a bunch of jokers not being able to meet the most basic of regulatory requirements.
Happy for Australia, way to go 👍👍👍
That was a gaff! - Cassandra not aware of RocketLab
Aussie here; what an embarrassment!
She’s aware alright. Just wanted to rain on the parade. The world is gearing for progress and people like her need to get out of the road.
Proud of you Gilmour Space!
We have long history in space. Onshore absolutely yes!
In the early 1970s Britain launched a satellite into Earth orbit from Woomerang, so this is not new to the Australian government.
@@favesongslist 1967 to be precise.

@favesongslist but WRESAT was 29th November 1967, launched from Woomera.
@@stevehunt4660 Yes very true, I believe it launched on a US Redstone rocket.
Again all the more reason to support Gilmour.
So nice to chat with someone that knows their history.
As you may have gathered i am from the UK, but loves space and rockets, I so hope Australia and SpaceX move forward with Starship together.
I wonder about the correlation between success and companies named after their CEO.
So Proud of everyone involved! God's Speed Mate!
I'm sorry but as an Australian this is pathetic. I'm not discrediting Gilmour Space here but our government. We need to have more of this and a more established space organization. Commercial mining is Australia's biggest economic venture. If we don't put Australian mining equipment on the Moon and beyond, our economy is going to (in the future) get lapped and destroyed by other advanced economic competitors. Heck New Zealand is doing better in the space scene than us. What bs.
I agree this is pathetic (and I'm also Australian). Copycatting Spacex is shameless. The fact is Australia is a chronically undeveloped lefty hell hole, populated largely by idiots. Going to space to mine resources (and bring them back to Earth) is a Terrible Idea unless you're okay with cost-efficiently showering vaporized mining material to the surface. Rather than developing systems for cost efficient access to low earth orbit, the Australian govt should be developing the HUGE SWATHES OF LAND IT REFUSES TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF. For fuck's sake, the govt is so corrupt/incompetent, we're not even allowed to smelt our own pig iron.
Nah as an Aussie to I will throw shade, this is pathetic. It’s a freaking hybrid rocket, that’s literally garage project material.
Political decisions are unfortunately based around election cycles. The current mob are better then the last but doubt they're thinking about 50 years from now.
Pretty sure space mining is never going to happen, lol
@@epicwinguyz space mining is almost guaranteed, if you can’t think past your lifetime that’s a you problem….. but these guys ain’t it
Be good to see the Aussies back in space since the 1960s ...
Because we are on the underneath side of the world all we need to do is drop something and it will fall down into space. Perfect place to do space exploration.
My mate Dave fell into space yesterday because he wasn't holding on tight enough. He was floating around out there for ages until we managed to get a fishing line hooked on him and reeled him back to Earth.
Cannot see a January takeoff, this is main start of cyclone season. Looking forward to it as will be watching the launch from my backyard in Queens Beach Bowen
Just looking at these two CEO's faces, I am not filled with confidence.
Australia is killing itself with overregulation.
Finally! 🚀 🌠 🎉
''one small step for launching a rocket, giant leap for Australian Space history". Good luck!
This is very cool.
All the very best Australia.
Our country sucks. Run by the worst politicians. Thanks, though.
likewise from the UK.
Go Gilmour Space Technologies
You can't even build a dog kennel in your backyard in Australia without 17 levels of government approval. Not unlike an episode of Clarkson's farm. Pleasantly surprised their schedule was only ~12 months late because of this!
Aussie Aussie, oye oye oye, good on u Australia 😀👌👍
If anyone is wondering how much it costs to ship stuff between Australia and the US, it's enough that it's apparently cheaper to create our own space program than FedEx a satellite to the US to launch it. 7:45
This is awesome to see.
40 years ago Joh said that launching rockets from Queensland would be big business. He wanted to build a large launch facility in north Queensland. He got blasted by the ALP over the idea. Even before the collapse of Communism the Soviets would have come here to launch as there's a 30% advantage compared to their own facilities.
Politics cost us 40 years and (at least) tens of billions of dollars.
Good luck to the entire group.
finally!!! is this real are australians working on exciting technology
This is great to hear for AU, however what are their plans for exploration? Without the government, exploration will be a nasty nasty achieve path considering other competitors and the nearby Rocket Labs. We would hate to see Gilmour Space fall into the space spam category of launchers. *Looks at notes* cough starlink *cough*
Anyone know when theyre launching? And will it be broadcast?
Long way to go, it’s just beginning 👍🏼
Long way or no way?
Is that the one in Bowen?
Little under a century late, but you’ve got the spirit!
God bless this project #
Finally! Gilmour will get to see the dark side of the moon! 😎
Very good. May God Bless Australia.
Fantastic
Welcome to the Space, mates!
Looking at the attitudes of this lawyer who has never launched a rocket or started a biz, shows what Gilmour is up aga8nst.
Australia is probably worse than California. Elon recounted how it took him well under 2 years to build a GigaFactory in China. Same factory in Texas, probably the most regulator, Cassandra free zone in the US? Just on 2 years. CALIFORNIA? Absolutely stuffed full of interfering Cassandras - Elon believed is a No Go area, as 2 years would be the bare minimum needed just to fill out the forms from all the Cassandras over there.
The dismissive attitude shown by Steer towards the consumer response of Gilmour towards his Cassandras, who he had to EDUCATE on how to regulate him is one Big Reason the Trump team was recently elected.
To rid America of its Cassandras, Elon and Vivek are aiming to shut down as much of the corruption government as possible. 1000s will be sacked on the first day. Many can't wait to hear the howls of the absolute useless.
How cute………..Little old NZ has been pumping them out once a month for years now.
You can bet on Rocket Lab!!
Rocket Lab is basically a US company with an NZ launch site and guy as the public face who apparently has a penchant for eating hats. ROFL
@ and so will the little battler Aussie company be eventually ………… bought. Yeh Pete does eat hat but with a couple of billion in stock it’s a small price to pay. So enjoy the cricket season……..
@@martynnewby6298 bro what did Aus do to hurt you
Is there anyone left in NZ to launch them though? More people leave nz each year 😂
I want to see cameras in orbit so we humans can see what is being placed in space above us, and would also like to see a camera facing the moon with high amount of zoom on it so we can also see what is going on there as well.
Too many permits, licenses and regulations. Australia is over governed and over regulated. We need smaller government, less bureaucracy, less government intrusiveness, overreach and micromanaging. More freedom, more privacy and more choice.
Excellent and congratulations to Gilmour.. 👏👏💯🍾 For politicians watching to get a vote, minimum requirements are . border security, food security, energy security. The environment issues are all secondary.
Should be easy to fire the payload out of a gauss gun, so long as its structural strength could withstand the launch g's at zero hour and the atmospheric blanket it has to punch a hole through.
Australia set to become an extension of the USA space program, southern hemisphere launches, as well as provided better launch access for Japan, the space program in Australia is set to expand hugely, not so much Australia's space programme but an alliance of partners, USA, Japan, Canada, Australia and the EU will probably gain access to the southern hemisphere via Australia.
I think it would bexbettercif we actually had trains that were quicker than Stephenson's Rocket, not going into space.
Only 8 years after New Zealand
In 2027 I’m launching RokitTaxi. I’m not getting approval, I’m just gonna do it.
Something good happens so the comments are full of grumblers

Don't forget WRESAT which made oz the third country to launch a satellite from its own soil. Go Gilmour, wish you had the budget and support they had.
@@noelmcc7366 the budget wasn't that big,...
While I often disagree with Elon's recent statements and actions, he makes a fair point about bureaucratic bloat. Here in Australia, we could benefit from streamlining our government departments. Not about reducing necessary oversight or regulation - just trimming the administrative excess that's accumulated over the years.
Good, this is long overdue.
THEY NEEDED PERSMISSION FROM WHO.who tf owns space
Gilmour is going to be like rocket lab. They are going to move ro America once they achieve success . Capital markets, technology. Rocket Lab is a 12 billion us dollar market cap.

It’s a shit show trying to get a little shed approved on my house block that I paid $800,000 for! I could only imagine what it would be like to try and launch a rocket! This country is so far behind we are practically still throwing rocks and sick at each other in comparison to other nations!
what are we going to clean the facilities?
Wow if XAI213K advertising strategy is to flood TH-cam comments, it must be pretty piss poor. I ain't going to touch it with a 10 foot barge pole.
Finally the earth is balanced. It was all wonky due to launches from North hemisphere only
Fact - Australia was the third country to launch a satellite 🛰️ in 1967 from its own land
Then, the system was no more
Good luck mate with the next launch
As an Australian and a space nerd…… this is actually pathetic. If my government let me actually do this in my garage I’m pretty sure I could, it’s literally that basic
Honestly it is a bit disappointing that we aren't further along, but in fairness Australia has never had any real launch vehicle industry so we don't have the same skill or experience base that American startups would have access to. Sub orbital flights are some of the first steps towards putting satellites into orbit and for a company to be in the process of developing this technology despite the lack of domestic expertise is a win even if we should have started earlier.
@ nah this isn’t even like “a delay in knowledge”….. it’s out right fraud, a hybrid rocket for anyone with actual knowledge is like saying “maybe if we used enough rubber bands”
@@user-kz9tm4zh6k Yeah, this is a huge waste of time. Clients who are serious (Telsta, Optus, Vodaphone, etc) are already partnered up with AST Spacemobile/Starlink for Satellites, and SpaceX and Rocket Lab for delivering the payloads. This company won't get far. Especially not in Australia.
This is basically a university experiment. We need a real launch provider, but doing anything innovative in Australia is a pain in the ass. I’d rather be American in that regard.
We need more Military Rockets in Australia 🦘
We have a space agency ?
We definitely did... I think it was Morrison who set it up... but I thought I overheard the news saying it was to be abolished early into the Albanese government, so I'm a little confused, but also pleased because I thought it was daft to abolish it just when the space industry is starting to take off.
How about we first aim to get the navy submarine defense capability up from 1 sub, Just saying
Finally! About time. If across the ditch NZ can do it we can. We should've done it before them, we have to be better than them because we're bigger. Sorry NZ it's just the way it is.
I hope they're successful.

A bit unfair drawing comparisons to spaceX in a first launch.
It's not a small thing doing what they're doing and I'm sure they have their own ideas about viability that certainly factor in spaceX's position in the market.

Really? I think Australia is just being used as the launch pad facility for US rockets, Australia doesn’t have enough rocket scientists to compete with superpowers like China or Russia.
