That's me! "Guitar Lady!" What an honor it was to lend George Harrison my Martin guitar to perform spontaneously on this VH1 Music TV show... and my capo too! (see 2min 40 mark). Thanks for posting this complete video! I have a nice photo on my wall of George playing my guitar along with my only autograph from a star, signed on my tour itinerary. I was on tour and I met the lighting director at my performance in NYC and he invited me to come the next night to VH1 studios and watch an interview live-in-studio with a few other people. So I went the next night, and I just happened to be on my way to a gig, so I had my Martin D-35 guitar with me and the TV producer came over to me and asked if I wouldn't mind lending my guitar to George. Fine by me! Then they sprung this proposal on George and coerced him to play, much to his own shock and dismay, since they were there for the interview about Ravi Shankar's new album that George had produced. So he rose to the challenge and played about 3 songs and the interview concluded. A bunch of people were approaching him, so I held back and slipped into a small studio playback room with him and some producers, and also his 20-something spitting image son. I found myself standing next to George as we listened to the playback of his performance so he could okay the release of it, and he turned to me and said, "sometimes I forget I'm in the music business because I'm always in my garden at home." Then he turned back and said, "I think that take was the best ..." and I responded immediately, "Yes, it is", because I knew it already from when I watched it live; he was just like any other songwriter performer, so friendly and accepting and a little unsure. Afterwards, people were dispersing and the TV producer came to me and asked me if I'd met George and if I'd been introduced to him. I said no, so she led me down a hallway into a small room where there was George and his record label president. I was standing in front of George and she formally announced my name and presented me to him. I was ready with my pen and paper and I asked him for his autograph and I gave him a copy of my new album, "Bury the Ghost" to use to sign the paper. He looked my Cd over and expressed amazement that I'd done it all myself. He said," Wow, and you've done this album on your own, so maybe my record company can help you". Haha, the guy in the bow tie looked nervous. I was down at his office the next morning, but never heard back from him. It's a cool album too, back in '97, my second, and it was so nice to know that George had a copy of it and brought it back to his Manor in London and gave it a spin and a listen with the windows open to the garden. This is a very special memory that I enjoy to recount to friends till this day, and it's fun to put it in writing here, though it's too long I think! Now for the first time I realize that this "last live public performance by George, before his death in 2001", would not have happened if I wasn't there!? Simple Synchronicity ;) So, thanks to you for reading my ramble (!). We are all touched to be in the presence of George Harrison.
I remember seeing this, a few days after George’s passing… Fast forward a couple of years later, out comes the album “brainwashed”- dropped the needle on the platter and there it was! Any road!! We love and miss you, George❤️🎸 PS - this is one of my favorite songs of George’s to play on MY Martin D 35…
I can’t believe his last song performed in public was All Things Must Pass, and it’s even more unbelievable that his last performance was completely by accident. Thank God that young lady had a guitar (and a capo) and the VJ had nerve. And he got to watch from as close as you can get.
as reluctant as he seems at first, the true musician emerges; any performer who’s ever had an unfamiliar instrument thrust into their hands and remembers most of the lyrics rises to the challenge if there’s a receptive audience; the world’s a better place that this footage exists; R.I.P. Beatle George
My adult daughter lived with me for a few months back in 2009. I'd been given a copy of "The Concert For George" and we watched it one night. She loved The Beatles from a young age, through my influence, and also through my influence, she preferred George to the other Beatles. After we'd finished watching the movie I got out my old All Things Must Pass sheet music book that I bought in 1972 and we got two of my guitars and jammed a few of those amazing songs together. All Things Must Pass, Isn't It a Pity, Wah Wah, I'd Have You Any Time, My Sweet Lord, and a few more that I can't remember after such a long time, but I do remember really rocking out to "It Don't Come Easy" that George wrote and gave to Ringo. I don't know how she felt about that night, but I reckoned it was so special that George's music bridged the generation gap, if only for that one special evening. I've had some really heartbreaking times in my musical career and was going through one at that time in 2009. A couple of days later, I came home and she'd written "All Things Must Pass" on a sticky note and stuck it on my fridge for me. One day years before that I had a gig to go to and wanted to eat some chicken nuggets before I left, but didn't have time to wait for them to cook. So I left them on a tray in the oven, knowing she'd be home from school soon, while I jumped into the shower to get cleaned up as well as shave my head. I left her a note on the oven door that read . . Turn me on dead man . . at 5:00.
John gave George that “mind” in the All Things Must Pass lyric “A mind can blow those clouds away”. Now, John mentions psychedelia as the purpose of the change but to me it makes the line more therapeutic. Beautiful performance here. So natural and relaxed… even when you see him not knowing what to do he doesn’t force it, he lets it come to him. That is how Jazz masters approach their music late in life. With a sort of calm “let’s see” attitude.
I cannot thank you enough for sharing this very Special time with the one and only George Harrison whom we all miss so much! I am certain he is Performing his music and Special Words with all up in Heaven! I Cherish all the Memories I have of all Genres of this Amazing Artist and I am sure you do as well! Rest Dear George! Neal in Boston :)) 🎤✨🎶🌹❤️👍🌈☮️
I am so glad I decided to look at utube today. This was a thoroughly enjoyable mini concert. I miss George and his music and seeing him like this almost made me cry. He seemed so peaceful and grounded in his later years in my opinion.
I never picked up a single lick from George from a guitarist's standpoint. But I try the very best I can to be the kind of man George was. The way he befriended people outside his own sphere of influence, thereby increasing his own sphere of influence, his generosity, the way he encouraged other people to be the best they could be . . Those are the principles that guide how I treat people.
When my kids mum mentioned Harrison for our second son's name straight away I thought of George and straight away I said Harrison!...that's the one...just a superb human being someone I look upto...not just his brilliant music but his thoughts on life...hopefully I can find that inner peace that George had one day god willing 🙏...r.i.p George
"All Things Must Pass" the deepest philosophical statement which twins with Dhani's "Waiting song". It is so respectful of the Harrison family to release this modest performance of the everlasting grace of the late Sir George Harrison.
Humble George Harrison...he had never changed. All his brilliant philosophical songs ...thanks George you will always be in our hearts and never forgotten...rest in peace 🙏☮️.
I still miss George and John so much. Thank God for the lady with the guitar and a bit of prodding from John to get George to play. I am so excited for this remix of All things must pass. I have already heard the one song they have released All things must pass and it sounds amazing. Can't wait for the album. Thank you Dhani, Paul Hicks and Olivia for remixing 'All things Must Pass' 2020. I can't wait to buy it in 2021.
What a great soul. What a great teacher. Thank you George, forever. All things MUST pass, but your beautiful essence has lingered as an echo for many. Namaste dear brother.
I love the synchronicity of how he had the guitar. Perfect! Can't imagine how the owner of it felt after it was returned to her. I would sleep with it happily ever after ;)
Can you imagine how " miss guitar lady" (George). felt ? George Harrison played her guitar what was to be his last performance. I would've felt so honoured.
I love the fact he sings the Travelling Wilbury's track If You Belonged To Me, which Dylan sang on the album. I love Dylan, but I think it would have been better if George had of sung it. Hare Krishna ✌️
The quiet Beatle but what he shared with the world, through his music and his beliefs, really eclipsed by a distance everything the others expressed from their more prominent social platforms. Certainly wish I'd known him personally.
@@chipgaasche4933 Chip, he was a man of great inner beauty who gave a great and immeasurable gift to mankind. If you can't see this, and appreciate this, and can only be negative, then perhaps it is the lens you are looking through that is the issue .. the lens of your own heart.
Let's face it, we all miss George "The Quiet Beatle". He was an incredible Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter & an integral part of the Beatles, plus a very humble & down to earth great guy! RIP George, you are sorely missed by so many......😢😢
Thanks John for this beautiful gift. I remember well when you first aired this segment and to have the entire thing is priceless. What a kind man George was, what a stroke of luck to have that friend bring a guitar in the studio and how thankful we are for you to ask George to play something.
