I live along the coast of Maine, within a few minutes drive of the US/Canadian border (Campobello Island). My family (both sides) are from Canada (Nova Scotia and PEI) and still have relatives there. I've been planning a trip in my sailboat to St. Pierre (perhaps in 2021 or whenever this Covid thing is behind us). I've been to Newfoundland many times but never to St. Pierre et Miquelon. My French isn't very good though. The last time I was in Paris, they asked me to please stop trying to speak French because they spoke English and I was "ruining their beautiful language!"😁

I'm surprised they don't speak English because Saint Pierre is surrounded by Canada. Yet there's not much of a French looking building on the Island. New Orleans, which the French left since 1762, even has more traces of the French.

@@MustDoCanada I was in Montreal. Most people I encountered seem to speak at least some English.
My observation is that most of the French overseas territories are either very poor or have very few traces of French influence other than the language. Unlike many of the previous or even current British overseas territories maintain strong British customs and influence.
