  • The Sutter Family farm - about 15 minutes Northeast of Viking, Alberta and where at the end of every hockey season, you’ll find the Head Coach of the Calgary Flames his true element.

The story about how the kids wouldn't be allowed to play until the work got done, so they learned teamwork: It really reflects Sutter's coaching style. Doesn't matter if you are the 4th liner or the superstar, you need to play properly in order to get ice time.

Same but reverse loyalty. He had me even more last year when he asked in the presser “what brings this province together. Sports!” He had more after, but he is a Provincial gem

Absolutely agree. As a young farmer across the border in Saskatchewan, and not terribly far away from Viking, Alberta in a prairie provinces perspective, I can resonate. Helluva guy from a helluva family.

My wife is from Red Deer and whenever she hears about the Sutter family she tells me how respected they are both on and off the ice, especially in Alberta. Most of her family farmed in Alberta around the Grand Prairie area, they certainly know who the Sutters are. My wife and I both live in the States now and it's always great to see Darryl Sutter on his off season on his farm. He is a great role model with a very strong work ethic. I like his style and character, he's a no BS kind of guy - Thank you for sharing this video.

My Father has a farm similar to theirs (only 2 quarter sections though) and I totally understand the value of living in the place where he grew up and is surrounded by the things that are in his memories of youth. I was flying with my wife, going to Banff for our honeymoon, flying from Chicago to Calgary, nearly 20 years ago. Darryl Sutter plus Rich & Ron got on the plane with us, sat in coach. John Davidson was on the same flight, sat first class. I thought it was in character for the Sutters to be flying coach. They were very nice to talk to at the baggage claim. They were going back to the farm. Really cool to see this video, and hearing him talk about what the farm means to him. Thanks for posting!

Just finished watching another vid where a man asked Sutter if he was "expecting something special" out of Pelletier. He scoffed at the word (special) and said bluntly, "No." And then left it without further explanation.
No wonder this man is coach of the year. Bring it home, Darryl!
