Miss Doris brought a talent to this character that no one else I think could have done. She was interviewed once and explained how she made someone who was such a pain in the tuchus actually very likable.

Ms. Roberts is the best T.V. Mom of all time. She honed the characterization of 'Marie' as only a legendary actress such as herself would do. Her character is classic Americana at its finest; it is timeless.
@@PatriciaLBaker Depends on what you mean by "best". If you mean funniest, most memorable and best acted you have a very good case. But if you mean a Mom has Mother and Wife; she is one of the absolute worst. Marie is hateful, cruel, amazingly selfish and full of herself, extremely manipulative etc., etc. One of the worst sitcom characters ever. Has a Wife and Mother this character is a toxic horror from hell. She is bluntly EVIL.

Love Marie. Even though she tells Debra she needs to do things her way. And treats Ray and Robert as kids. And loves to interfere. She was a great actress. May she rest in peace.
She played a very stereotypical (Italian American) mother. Though she can easily pass for any mother in a traditional religious household the world over. Matriarchal is a very apt name for the style of parenting she delivers.
She was a STAR and always will be! R.I.P 😇💫

Remember the scene when Marie smacked Raymond across the face in the episode Bad Moon Rising? I feel like giving her a crack to her jaw if my hand can attempt to reach into the television screen. She was the most belittling, condescending, manipulating, outrageous creature no man or woman should have for a mother.

Marie smacking Ray TWICE in Bad Moon Rising is really one of her best moments. I love how he looks to Marie for support and she comes in with the slap.

Not really. That’s how things are in most semi conservative catholic households (Mexican here). My grandma was very competitive with all her daughters in law in the kitchen. My mom got the worst of it cause she married her favorite son, so I can sympathize with Debra.

Marie is the perfect character. I just love her. Her make up usually makes her look pale. The writers were very insightful and clever.

In the thank you notes episode. Marie, just slayed me. She said that Amy, was making a big deal, about writing thank you notes. Marie, was the one, who was getting freaked out, because the thank you notes weren't written, yet. She had so much power, over everyone. It was so funny. 😅
