The £8,000 Electric Car Taking China By Storm | Fully Charged

  • Unlike the European market where cheap, basic electric cars continue to be about as common as rocking horse poo, the Chinese market is positively spoiled with them. In fact, there are now so many different new EVs on sale in China for less than the equivalent of £10,000 that it’s actually becoming quite tricky to stand out in that segment (which is a lovely problem to have!).
    But one new supermini has quickly established itself as a new favourite with Chinese buyers: the T03 from Leapmotor. Does this new EV, starting at the equivalent of just over £8,000, represent the perfect sweet spot where cheap meets cheerful? We sent our Chinese correspondent Elliot to find out.

With their relationship with the CCP automaker FAW how much of the car is subsidized? Traditionally low cost Chinese EVs have had a bad safety track record. What makes the TO 3 different?

    We often see people complain that Chinese manufacturers have stolen designs from foreign competitors. But in this case if they have stolen it from a foreign competitor then they've got access to a frigging time machine because I haven't seen any established car brands putting this sort of package together at this price point. I think we can safely say China is just as innovative and prepared to spend on R&D as any other country.

    • @rocksfire4390
      @rocksfire4390 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      just because you haven't seen them priced at that level doesn't mean they didn't take the designs. they could be selling it cheap, likely to gain traction, at a loss or break even level.
      i hope they didn't, i hope they did it themselves and they crush the fuck out of the market. i want cheap, high quality products. i hope they do well, assuming they are at least reasonable with their workers. i hope these come to the US so it kicks all of our auto makers in the ass and they stop overcharging for hunks of junk.
      i ofc also understand that there are human work related issues in China and yes even in the US.
      i agree that people do jump to conclusions but in most cases they are founded in reality sadly. ofc most people do overlook their own country when they try to compare...so yea things to keep in mind.

Also in Europe which has a cleaner grid than the US, a model 3 has an average footprint of 90g CO2 per mile, which is only 30-40% better than an engined car. Big EVs are simply not a sufficient improvement to be worthwhile or fulfill their promise of cleaning up private transport.

The Union of Concerned Scientists, who have done exhaustive studies of the US grid and the relation that EVs have to it over the past decade (updated every few years,) that even in places where the grid is particularly dirty (coal burning states) an EV is always going to emit less that a gasoline car. The Model 3 is particularly efficient, something like 121MPGe EPA.

      I can guarantee that price will be without VAT. Plus, we don't know if it has the mandatory safety features for roads outside of China. With VAT it'll be £8000, and I'd wager in its current form it'll probably crumple like a concertina in a crash. Around the same price as a Dacia Spring, say about £16k, would be more realistic.

    • @bonzobanana1

      Well the MG ZS is about 12,500 dollars in China but would be about 21,000 dollars in the UK converted from £. So is that about 70-80% more? So assuming the same ratio something like £12k. It's very low quality in many areas too but then much of the cost is the batteries. If it was £9k it would be amazing and under £10k really good but at £12k I feel like some more conventional cars with improved safety, style and performance would be preferred even if petrol based.
