Funny thing is, I was telling myself I needed all the text, b roll, music etc to upload and it delayed my starting. I decided to just do vlogs/talking heads where I just dumped my brain. I launched my first video yesterday knowing it is far from perfect but knowing I will get better with each subsequent video. In the past two days, I've seen about 10 videos saying this is now popular.
Yeah same here. At first I thought I needed all the features and everything but I realized the video editing process was taking too long so I focused on making better quality videos so I can edit a lot less and get more production out.
The thoughts of the stress from editing made me start my channel late after pondering for so long. Now i finally started my channel about 2 months ago @@MikePhoTravelVlogs
this comes at the right time. I am a 45-yo Asian dude sharing my passions, life experience and struggles. I think telling stories is so important because each individual story is unique. Amplify character X personal stories and transform key takeaways that are useful to people.
Quick story: Years ago, I used to watch and listen to TH-cam. Now, I listen or watch and code; sometimes, I listen or watch and take notes (default). On this occasion, it was the listen and code option. But now I will be watching this later and adding notes on the rerun. Great episode, guys. For real, for real, there are so many valuable nuggets.
I just started days ago and I’m at 1300 from shorts my actual videos not moving but I hope everyone who wanna start just go for it don’t over thank, trust me I support who support me. I’m sure communities could be build if we come together
I get so much value from a lot of your videos but I got extraordinary value from this one. Sean I just want to thank you, your videos have tremendously helped me and have given me the courage to seriously consider making a channel. I really like the insight from this interview and especially the bit about having fun with the work. Your friend is truly inspiring. Thanks so much!
I do this with specific topics my audience is searching for related to fitness. I plan the content, but I just hit record, talk as I walk, do some light editing if needed, and post it. I enjoy it. It’s easy. It’s full of value (in my opinion). And I figured those who really care about the content and like me and what I’m doing, will be willing to just listen to me and not care that there’s no “production” value. The value is in the content I’m sharing, not the equipment or cute editing.
Art creators have been keying off this approach for a while. Sit down, paint, publish. 🎉🎉 This vid was incredibly helpful though to dive deeper and refine the technique. Thank you!
This episode is a MUST watch/listen to any creator, big or small. There is so much great info and knowledge. There’s a reason you two have written books about this. I’ve shared this with so many. Took me a few days to watch the whole thing 😅 but worth it nonetheless! Thank you.
Thank you for inspiring me to jump to a new level as a new TH-camr... I've started trying to create this raw style of vlogging and after watching this podcast you've confirmed that this is the way for me to go...your new subscriber vlog life 247🙏🏽
We pay for WiFi. We have TH-cam premium subscriptions. And a fire stick for the TV that isn’t smart. So happy! And yes, we are those people who watch the yard guys help people in their communities…my husband had his own yard business over 25 years…so weird how listening to a weed eater can be almost meditative😂
Keep it up, Benji! Great seeing your vlogs and watching your channel grow in the last few months. It’s also awesome seeing you guys together making this video 🙌
Just what i needed to hear I went from this style naturally to trying too hard and then I burnt out. I am going to go back to my natural style, and you guys described it as vlogging, which is exactly where my comfort zone is and where I feel the most genuine. So thank you for putting this out there!
Damn I watched/listened to the whole thing and learned plenty! Man, I remember Benji from the early 2010s when I first started really watching TH-cam because my ex at the time loved watching Judy 😅. Their vlog channel was one of the first vlog channels that made me want to start vlogging. Vlogging has always been something I wanted to do since and I tried a few times, but never committed. This year, I decided to go full commit and am about to post my 13th video with plenty more to come! This was absolutely a solid listen!
Got so excited on this I went straight out in our garden and shot a vlog with my daughter! Thanks guys as I love vlogging but it wasn’t doing so great. New format comeback YEW. Oh I have 3 monetized channels. Surfing, retirement and organic gardening. So I am super busy
This is interesting because this is how I started my channel almost 10 years ago...shoot the video...upload. I never watched them because back then I knew that if I did I'd beat myself up and then not post it. Buy I knew I wanted to get what I was learning out there to others. It's a welcome return as I try and revive my channel❤❤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I really appreciate this video. I'm a father of two little ones with a house, a full-time job, and a bunch of projects. Needless to say, my time goes a lot of different ways. I've had a difficult time finding content creation advice from other creators who are also parents. It's helpful to hear Benji talk about how he has optimized his production process and leaned into a more unpolished style of content. :)
I like the idea of this but here’s my question…how do you position the camera? Are you moving it around? I do cooking and cleaning and laundry so do I put the camera so I can see everything and just film?
Good to see Benji again. I remember seeing both of you in the early days in Benji's mom's house (I believe) and in the back yard, just grinding away 💪😎
Absolutely brilliant discussion, so insightful and really, beyond helpful for a new daily Vlog channel! Doing a bit of homework, trying to figure out ways of improving the content for more broad appeal, this is EXACTLY what I needed to hear. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this, brilliant!!!
Wow the dialogue about criticism was sooooooo helpful! I will admit that comments is something that has been keeping me back (and finally I found VRA and am working through it). I loved the discussion around putting myself in a good mindset but also giving people grace.
This was a very interesting conversation. It is cool to see you guys back together and still together after all these years. After the Survivorman-Les Stroud video blog, you two were the 1st vloggers I had ever seen.
I’m a skateboarder & singing bass player, that’s my fun! After listening to this whole episode over 4 to 5 sessions… I’m really thinking about leaning into it and building a true audience that would be interested in getting to know me while I share my experiences learning new songs, learning new tricks, hearing our original and cover songs, and overall just sharing the process of both of my passions. Thx 👊🏼🤙🏽🙏🏼🫵🏼
I think he’s speaking to the shift in people favoring this style. But you’re right I feel like that style is literally any van life video I’ve ever watched. That’s been their style.

You have just made my decision for me - I’m purchasing the DJI Osmo Pocket 3…I’m ready to Simplify the entire process, make it fun & easy and and “just hit record :))
So funny, this was the original way of Vlogging when it all began. Its reality content and not polished edited or AI created. This 'Reality Style Vlogging' is in many ways better, it really shows what someone does on a daily basis. We all know the 'Instagram' pictures vs reality, and how different it really is in true life. The edited and non edited style have their place or lets say genre. and their audience may prefer one over the other.
i’ve been doing daily videos for the last 107 days, and i literally posted one yesterday asking how to structure my content….this was sick! thank you 🙏🏼
Love this. Pinged you up on the TV. Really enjoyed the chat about negative comments. "Judge not lest ye be judged." I'd like to see your conversations become a regular monthly spot maybe. Even virtual streamyard chats would be good. 🙂
Wait he didn’t make any videos on his channel for 3-4 yrs and it was dead in the water, and then he came back to the channel and revived it with new vlog style?
I listened to the podcast on my way to film a highly edited food review video. I changed my mind and decided to do it VLOG style. I’m on my way home to edit now. Hopefully won’t be too much editing lol. Wish me luck. Thanks for the podcast guys. This was very informational and helpful.
Hey - is a tactic to say “new style of vlogging” 1045 times important for SEO? Serious question. I’m 11:50 in and still have zero understanding of what new style of vlogging is.

Im actually started this kind of vlogging before see this podcast. Im always watching my favorite travel vloggers like Luke Damant and Dale Philip. Their style of vlog is like unscripted and unplanned. They will just go to random street, places and buy anything of talking to the people and yet viewers enjoying it im included. Their videos is 40 to 1 hour long but more of their viewers finished it till the end. One more is Sam Sulek he has million followers now just documenting his fitness journey. So now im also starting this kind of vlogging because its no pressure to me i feel that is my real personality and im enjoying it. Ill come back to this comment once i see a progress and im sure there will be. See you again guys! ❤
If you have a big channel already, would starting a themed vlog as a playlist for your channel in addition to some of your regular style content hurt your performance or would it only add to your success, as long as you're sticking your channel theme?
🎉🎉🎉Great insightful. Benji great knowledge you are giving us. A big thank you. You make me more hopeful in starting the new vlogging. I don't know telling stories are so important. Creating video we are having fun with. Good advice, be neutral with comments. I love your Christian living. Having a Christian mentor, goes a long way, super helpful 🎉
Oh my goodness you guys read my mind I am looking at starting a vlog style channel in the next couple of months about my journey into start Music Production (at 35 years old 🤪) and focusing on different topics within that .. I'm excited about it but nervous as well 😬😊😊
The irony. I made my first “vlog” video and did exactly this. All other videos I’ve tried to make with that style were a pill to edit, incredibly time consuming, and felt chaotic and pointless. Who cares that I had a green juice before watching a new Netflix series? Talking about ONE thing in a vlog style is just something I decided to do for my own sanity. But apparently it’s the ‘new’ thing! What luck.
Thanks for the tips, very interesting, I follow you from Italy. I did not know Benji. I really liked his personality, now I have subscribed to his channel, he is a nice person, and I like his new way of vloggin, I take the example
Great conversation! In line with what was discussed in this video, it would be great if you could cover the explosion of 'walking tour' videos on TH-cam.
How do you know that the "You're starving your children" comment wasn't sarcasm? It think as a creator we should always look to the positives of comments... believe me, I get my fair share of negative comments... I'm not the best fisherman and people berate me... but I am thankful for their comment. They were moved enough to comment. They gave me feedback... I can take it on, laugh, ALWAYS REPLY positively, that disarms them... Remember anyone negatively commenting will always be done by people doing less than you.
I don't see people brushing their teeth in vlogs, it's always seems to be making coffee (sometime tea) and it's actually really annoying lol and they do it every video as if we didn't watch them make coffee the last 5 videos. We know you drink coffee haha
This video was pure GOLD! Thanks so much for so many philosophical and practical tips to grow my channel through vlogs. I now feel more confident on how to find my Halloween people!! 👻🎃
This is brilliant, i feel like you guys went up a level in this conversation! Also, side note, i think that Sean just got a bit schooled. In his mind it's like "oh man, i work so hard on my content and Benji is just taking the Osmo to costco and getting views....".
Sean, I wanted to make a confession...months ago I left you an indignant message (comment) about you charging so much for courses, etc. I have followed Think Media forever and I think I expressed those negative statements because I was afraid you guys were no longer going to be accessible. I'M SORRY!! I hope you will forgive me. So, ironically, here I am signed up for your Free 5-Day Challenge in July and your channel is my mentor to have courage to begin a TH-cam journey. Thank you for being authentic and for caring for the small channels and the not-yet-existent ones.
It’s a process to learn the editing part just like anything. Tutorials are your friend and learning to pull and copy other editing styles is how I first began to learn. But if/when possible if you don’t enjoy it, try to hire it out. - Think Media Editor PS. CapCut is a great editing tool and is available on desktop too
@@ThinkMediaPodcastHe sean. yes your right been keeping it simple with i movie right now. But as a realtor, mom and farmer, i get super busy. How can you find someone that understands your niche amongst the sea of upwork editors to be able to higher out if im not able to?
I'd call it 'Info-Vlogs.... less about my life and more about a topic or issue, even though filmed during parts of my life. I'd combine narration and voice over with interludes in-between points....
I've had my channel since 2005 and I have less than 2,000 subscribers and I do this talking heads thing that you're talking about so I'm not sure why I don't attract more subscribers but I'm pretty eccentric and I'm on the autism spectrum

Yayyyy permission to try some less polished content! And to just be me! This is why I love TH-cam!
Is your book, youtube secrets still relevent? Should I buy it, or something newer you've put out?
Yes - 2nd edition is what is on Amazon right now. It was just updated. 💯
I started my channel for over a month now and I do want viewers to comment on all my videos whether it positive or negative it doesn’t matter 😀
starts around 10:49
I don't see people brushing their teeth in vlogs, it's always seems to be making coffee (sometime tea) and it's actually really annoying lol and they do it every video as if we didn't watch them make coffee the last 5 videos. We know you drink coffee haha
This is pretty much how I create my vlogs. Being a single mum and working full time this is the only way I’d ever be able to make any content.
Literally the only video on this top In such depth🎉
Thanks for sharing Benji gonna try vlogging
Hey! Loved the information, if you put God first then your spouse your sure to be in order ❤️
So true!
This was such a great video! Thank you! 😊
The duo is back!
This video was pure GOLD! Thanks so much for so many philosophical and practical tips to grow my channel through vlogs. I now feel more confident on how to find my Halloween people!! 👻🎃
Thanks so much. Trying to figure my style of video… what works for me. I’m a new content creator 😅 just trying to be me
Man. I remember daily vlogging. It was a wild time. Vlogged my youngest childs birth
I love everything about thinkmedia I'm a big fan!.
Respectfully, I want to admit to the fact that I love, love Seans Canells voice :)
I love think media but youtube secrets was a very underwhelming book
I like the videoing part but super struggle with the editing part. Any advice??
Keep it simple at the start. It will become easier over time. I love CapCut mobile and desktop for software. - Sean
It’s a process to learn the editing part just like anything. Tutorials are your friend and learning to pull and copy other editing styles is how I first began to learn. But if/when possible if you don’t enjoy it, try to hire it out. - Think Media Editor
PS.

Interesting blogging comparison ❤❤❤👌👌👌🩵🩵🩵
Nice job guys 👌😉
Thank you 😁
I just posted a video of me trying to do this. I have tons of footage of me filming my first TH-cam video I decided to start posting them.
I'd call it 'Info-Vlogs.... less about my life and more about a topic or issue, even though filmed during parts of my life. I'd combine narration and voice over with interludes in-between points....
How it became new style? I am seeing the style long time from other vloggers
Very helpful thanks
I've had my channel since 2005 and I have less than 2,000 subscribers and I do this talking heads thing that you're talking about so I'm not sure why I don't attract more subscribers but I'm pretty eccentric and I'm on the autism spectrum
