Correction born in NY, PR, in any state makes you a U.S. citizen - it does not make you a half Puerto Rican. Both of her parents are Puerto Rican, which makes Gladys a full blooded Boricua who was born in Manhattan which makes her a New Yorker. Now, their kids are half Boricua and half Belgian born in California - they are Angelinos.
I gotta say, I love that this interview shines so much light and love on Gladys Portugues. So many martial arts channels ask a million questions about Van Damme, but it seems like only the fitness channels shine light on her. She's a Boricua legend, and those of us that remember the fitness craze in the 80's remember her prominence, and the impact that she made in the fitness community. 💪🏽

You are finally there. You will have your JCVD interview soon. This channel is a HUGE JCVD fan community amongst others. I trained from 6 years old on. When I saw Van Damme I loved him because I knew I was more proficient than he was and he looked GOOD. It gave me a sense of pride and I loved how he never betrayed his martial arts. I also dug the movies. It was the 80s and his movies with the Go Go Boys were insane! From Sho Kosugi to No Retreat No Surrender, you knew this guy was going to be around, and he trained a system similar to my own just based on observation. Couldn't get enough of those movies when I was a kid. I've been a fan forever and was only disappointed in his spousal abuse and substance abuse. I'm no saint but there it is. Bruce Lee was the reason I wanted to train. JCVD's movies were a reason to keep improving. Kudos Viking Samurai, you are at what I feel is your biggest milestone. A JCVD interview.

Kris definitely favors his mother's genetics in everyway from his looks, his frame, his demeanor. I would never know he is Jean Claude's son but would instantly know he's Glady's son, haha.

This was very cool to hear! I completly forgot about Kris' mom being a pro body builder. Shes a beautiful woman....most female bodybuilders looks like Beastman! The clip of Kris on the bar...makes me look like im below standard level. I can actually spar for a very long time and go the distance but when it comes to pull ups and lifting my own weight on monkey bars....im a complete dead weight!
Best exercise is martial arts. Literally doing fighting moves. (Both sides). Both anaerobic and aerobic exercise. Crazy results. And of course stretching; so underrated. VanDamme would agree. Only man who has better kicks than me.
Behind every great man is a great woman. This is totally the case with Jean Claude. I wouldn't be surprised if Gladys had a lot to do with Jean Claude being able to look like he did while maintaining such a high level of flexibility and martial arts acumen. No one in the martial arts world both looked like, and moved, like JCVD did, and to a surprising degree still does.
Thats True I remember watching VD in his early years. The movie Dark Eagle I stand corrected. When he fought Sho Kosugi i was astounded how he could move with all that mass. In No retreat and no surrender also. And of course his other movies. VD did say he wished he did not train like that back in the day the body building. He saw the disadvantages of it threw the years. He said it was what he wanted back then he was a skinny kid he wanted big muscles to look good. He says today he trains nothing like that back in the day he goes light weight and resistance training.
