And I think that says more about us, the audience, than about the artists or the industry.
I respectfully disagree, Moth Girl. Phil Cool's face did things Carrey could only dream about. Also JC doesn't hold a candle to Rowan Martin, either. Then there's Jerry Lewis and ol Sid Caesar. Also, we mustn't forget Charlie Callas, Johnny Rizzo, Charlie Barnett, and Mr Rubber Face, Terry Gillespie. As far as women, we have Phyllis Diller & Imogene Coca. Jim ain't too bad, though. Probably somewhere in the top five :/
Carson was such a clsss act. Knew early on how to let his guests shine, and not to upstage them. So many greats got their first exposure nationally and on television through him. May he RIP.
Carson knew by sharing the spotlight others made him look better. He realized there was great talent out there so why not give them their big break? Why do all the hard work when your platform let's others carry your load. He knew the public looked forward to his showcasing new talent. He didn't fear it. He built a rolodex of talent which any producer would envy. Not all succeeded--some are long forgotten. Johnny was the best.
Nothing against Carson's greatness, but Jim Carrey was basically forced on The Tonight Show by the network because the show Carson mentioned while introducing him was on the same network. Also, it's pretty well known that when Carson didn't invite the guests to come talk with him, it meant he didn't really like the act.

@@Dman3827 yea, he just does crosswords, and he loves 10,000 piece puzzles, and lemon water, he loves lemon water.
We gave Jim Carrey a minute. Jim Carrey gave us a lifetime.
Huh?
Really wish he's still a movie star again..
@@Frankincensedjb123 My guess is that OC thinks this bit made Jim Carrey's career.
That’s sad I didn’t know he died
@@Frankincensedjb123 yea trying too hard to sound deep
The set was so original and so perfectly done as each face he did was 100% right on! An amazing first time on Cason!
How talented can one man get? That James Dean among all the others? Just phenomenal so accurate and hilarious! Gotta love this guy, so funny! So unique. Amazing!
Wow... I mean wow. He just blew me away, especially the Michael Landon and Muppet impressions. My jaw was literally dropped. He is his own masterpiece!
Those were the 2 best then My Three sons skit.
He is really talented. He would not be where he is today if not for his crazy comedic acts.
When you had Johnny Carson's blessing, and you appeared on his show, you knew you had finally arrived! Carey deserved it, and he has made alot of people laugh!
He will always be my favorite of all time. He is so talented !
Hello 👋
Jim Carrey definitely one of my favorite comedians. There’s only a few great actors like this . Such a great impressions he always did with his facial expressions. Definitely one of greatest
mine to
I still can't watch the last courtroom scene in Liar Liar without cracking up laughing till my stomach hurts.
The variety is astounding. This is completely unique.
I loved it when he would do impressions of people doing impressions of other people, it was so complex it blew my mind.
Impression inception 🤯
Mel Blanc level genius..
I would LOVE to see him do an impression of Rich Little doing an impression of Richard Nixon! LOL
holy cow, what a talent! fascinating to see this knowing it was his DEBUT for the American audience and what a stellar career he embarked on. He really is such a gifted actor, impersonator. the muppet song was incredible, shifting between the various voices so quickly. Jim Carrey is a treasure.
I've never seen this performance before. This is why Jim is so great! I've seen his Clint Eastwood before, but not a lot of these. His Kermit and Miss Piggy are priceless. I'd sure love to see him do stand up again.
I never loved his brand of humor, but I gotta give him two things: first, in his league he's BY FAR the best, and second, whatever the hell it is that he does, he's the only one that can pull it off.
He definitely gives 110%
You said it. That's why we love him. He's simply a true one of one.
My all time favorite impressionist! Every face he literally “put on” was anatomically perfect.
Dude... the "Michael Landon smiling "... was freakin ridiculous.. 🤣
Even after all these years he knows how to make us laugh with his work. He'll always be that icon when it comes to needing a laugh in a time of need,
Yeah Johnny was a champion ........
?
He’s a drugged out mentally case now. No one is laughing.
Too bad he turned into such a tool.
He won the audience over in real time that’s incredible
A phenomenal talent. He's been entertaining us forever and he always has a leg up as far as improvising.
I can’t imagine how long he spent practicing in front of the mirror
You don’t know shiz
Hours
@@robmacleod6051 Try days
Probably his whole life every day until that point
He doesn't need to practice, that's who he really is XD
Big fan of Jim Carrey! I always tend to get a little melancholy when I watch Johnny Carson. No other late night host has even come close to him. Always sharp and funny, knew how to interview every guest, always in control, and his wit allowed him to adlib in any and every situation. I don't think there will ever be another Johnny Carson.
Graham Norton is also very good.
David Letterman is a lot funnier than Johnny Carson ever was.
@@paulkelly1169 Love Graham Norton, and his virgin/any radio show is great too! he's an author as well :D
Johnny Carson Jr. has somethang to say about dat!
@@mr.blackhawk142 "no... just no." - also kinda of what GNorton says too lol x
He's impressions back then.. totally different person you might say
Pure talent. Pure legend. Jim Carrey❤
What a masterpiece, I had never seen this footage until tonight.
Total commitment with every thing he's ever done❤
JC has the best physical humor ever - down to a science. He was way ahead of his time and a lot of people back during this time didn't "get it" because this level of physical humor wasn't considered legit humor yet. Didn't take long for him to prove them all wrong.
Michael Landon smiling makes me crack up every time!
Same
I died
My mom was a superfan of Little House on the Prairie when I was a kid, and I have to say that Carrey's "Michael Landon smiling" impression is SPOT ON.
He is, always was & always will be a brilliant, one of a kind comedian & actor. Bravo Jim ! You have brought joy & laughter over the years to so many. God bless you Funny Man & Dear Soul. You will always be my Favorite ! ❤
Kermit and Piggy singing made me cry. So sweet.
Hello 👋
Dedication and motivation will get you anywhere on earth and beyond. That's why several years ago he started his spiritual endeavor with the universe and also started lecturing about his transformation.
This young man is talented, I hope he goes far.

Hello 👋
What a great timeless performance. Love him.
Wow...this debut really captured the essence of Jim Carey the comedian ! Pure entertainment !
This performance is brilliant. Jim is one of a kind.
I remember watching this episode on Johnny Carson. It's still just as funny as it was that night! Big smiles and memories of an older woman! 👩🏼🦳😁❤❤❤❤❤

I didn't know he was on the Johnny Carson show!! The Johnny show was awesome and Jim is older than I thought. He is awesome and very very very talented then and now. Unbelievably deep, soulful and with ability to use he face and all of his being to act out other people. He has been such a blessing to the world in entertaining us with his great communication skills to make us laugh, lifting our spirits higher. Got to luv him. Where ever he maybe, I wish he is doing very well and good. Thank you Mr. Carey for making the world a happier place to be.
Hello 👋
How could you have not known he was on Johnny Carson? He was the most famous talk show host at that time, of course he was gonna perform on Johnny Carson
I remember watching this the night it first showed. We were laughing so hard we about peed our pants. All his characters on In Living Color too, he is brilliant. We knew it right then. A true gem.
I was watching that night laughing my ass off and never forgot that Michael Landon impression. Never foresaw his movie career.
He is really is something else. All those movements with seemingly every fiber of his body. It's also amazing the level someone would go to (to) be good. Insanity.
He doesn't even need a change of wardrobe to imitate all these people, the expressions say it all.
Jim Carey has always been so funny.Hes a class act.one of the best❤️❤️
@JimCarreyone Tx
I remember this, and I really love this and Jim, when he sings Kermit and miss piggy it actually brings tears to me, thank you sharing this and bringing happy memories to me because I needed some joy tonight
He's so talented and he seems like a nice person too.
A friend of mine wrote for In Living Color for a spell, and he said that off-camera Carrey was just a nice dude, and that he wasn't always "on."
Jeez , whether you love him or hate him , he was a massive risk taker and high-octane performance . Damn
Johnny knows he just made him Carrey a star you can see it while he claps at the end watch the smile of joy on his face says it ALL!!!!
To be able to switch back, and forth on that last one was awesome!
I grew up watching Clint and Landon and he nailed them both. I watched this live and he was instantly one of my favorite comedians.
Jim Cary Is The Greatest Facial Impressionist Of All Time !!...Its Like His Face Becomes A Human Cartoon , And Someone Literally Draws The Character Onto Him !!....The James Dean , And Clint Eastwood Were INCREDIBLE !!!..
Yes, which is also the reason why he’s the best comedian of all time
I was born in 87 when I grew up Jim Carrey was huge and I can see why back when television was worth watching. It’s been a good ride.
@JimCarreyone Maine buddy thanks for responding your good people
What it's all about is the ability to seem at ease, natural, and spontaneous in front of an audience. It's the difference between someone playing an instrument and looking like they're struggling with it, and one that seems to be one with it. People can sense the difference. You can see that Jim had the stuff to entertain an audience. Elvis impersonation, fine, Kermit, fine, but the key was how smooth and easy he made it seem. We all know it's far from easy!
This Jim Carrey kid has a bright future ahead of him.
This made my heart beat fast ❤️

He's so dedicated through this entire bit!! It's seriously impressive!!!
Probably the only person that has ever done impressions by just looking like the person, without saying a word. Just amazing.

@@Mr.Honest247 Ok. Probably the only WELL KNOWN CELEBRITY that has ever done impressions by just looking like person. Is that better? Now you can sleep tonight because I know that probably kept you up all night.
Agreed
Right. Not easy making faces. I try all the time with my 5 yr old daughter. I can make a few random faces, but contorting my face to look like someone else is near to impossible for me. Jim Carrey is a legend at faces, period. So was Martin Lawrence.
The guy was always destined to be famous. Talent unmatched👏
A truly talented guy. His Clint Eastwood,James Dean and others were spot on. Hard to believe 1983 was 39 years ago now! Seems just like yesterday.
Yes, that’s why makes him the best comedian of all time
Yep, this debut showed what an unstoppable talent he was in 1983. I bet even youngsters today can see that he was something special--though they might not get all the references.
Clint Eastwood was scary good man. And he was injecting humor at the same time , incredible really.
