One of the trickiest things for any complex system to do is to regain its stride after stumbling. Off and on again is a fundamental principle for a reason.
It's called reset for a reason, you make the thing go out of the failed state then start again with the possibility of not entering the failed state that it entered previously.
You can make a carousel with auto arm and a storage sensor so every time an item comes off one of the storages it sends a signal every 10 - 30 seconds. Worked well with the soil centrifuge
this is way more complicated than need be. if you watched the developer stream they put a single untouched arm next to an array of like 8 different resource canisters on a slanted platform and since each canister can only accept its ONE type of resource the arm would only ever deposit them in the proper canister by default..
He knows, but there isn’t a large enough platform for all the large canisters, and since he wanted to use the larges, he had to make it a little more complex.
@@samurban6058 Then can't he have an arm on each platform. The arm will try to put the current resource in and if there's no matching canister it passes it to the next arm on the next platform
The arms don't need to be on each platform. You could have one area where the arms collect from that spans out to multiple large containers. Although I'm not realizing if you wanted EVERY material sorted you would need to do something similar to what he's doing rather than what I'm saying
Suggestion for anyone looking to make the large version in survival, put the auto arms on the out side (away from the center walk way) helps to keep storage container towards you and to stop the auto arms from putting item into your back pack other that the design is great
Something that sorts everything is indeed cool, but I take a different approach: Having a clean input. By using resource canisters to collect resources, I only collect what I want. And if it's a metal resource, I drop it down a platform where it will be transfer to the the furnace, and once it's been smelted it gets sucked up by the large resource canisters. Less complexity with the automation. Then I have another lane where I drop the resources that are craftable by the soil centrifuge to be sorted.
Agreed. But with storage sensors you can actualy make your own timers ;) (probably. Ive come very close but did run into some slight problems that are probably fixable)
Yea i wish there was a way to add delays. I tried adding more repeaters in line, but they all seem to logic at the same time. Was hoping they stepped. Thoigh they may still step but too quickly. Also setting up a button repeater loop stops and other buttons from working....
I agree with Atom, but what I want to see is free cam for survival but costing a nanocarb. SES didn’t add free cam to survival cause they were worried players would use free cam to find resources and other stuff, and it would potentially defeat the purpose of exploration. But if it is nanocarb, and costing something insane like 50,000 bytes then players will have already explored most of the game and getting free cam would be like a fun thing to do endgame
i dont know how anyone can stand to see anything overlap on large silos. I just cant get myself to put them next to each other cuz the overlapping bothers me so much
Omfg, first world problems. Don't look at them then. The arms will pull out of them regardless and they will get sorted into resource storage silos. So it's only a problem during resource collection.
I put all medium canisters on "Output mode" and use some medium towers for "input into the system", so when I see items are not getting sucked in, I go to 1 empty canister and disable its output mode, so they get assigned to that resource. To me, initializing canisters on-demand this way is less cumbersome than initializing all canisters at once.
You can make a timer using 2 medium soil canisters. One full and one empty both on the same platform with one small canister and set one to disable and one to enable. It will transfer the soild from the full one to the empty one. Use a storage detector on one set to fill or empty and conect it to both canisters and your button repeater. Every 24 seconds it will send a signal that presses your button and swaps the state of each canister so that they transfer back and forth.
Love how this turned out! I wish there was a way to have Furnaces trigger arms, or something. Have you considered 1 Extra Large Platform with 3 Smelting Furnaces? You have one 'slot' free that you can have one Auto arm feeding into and one Auto Arm taking out of. If the item put in is furnaceable, it wil instantly get furnaced. If it's done furnacing or if it's not furnaceable it will wait on the free slots, ready to be picked up. You might need to double this setup to get 100% efficiency, and it doesn't use fancy automation, but you won't need to manually push a button to start the unfurnacable-sorting either
If you use smaller containers for resourcers, you can probably make this entire sistem smaller and easyer for game to run, but you'll have less resources there
I LOVE the compact idea. I usually just make a hole in the ground and throw any loose resources in there. Then when I need something I just dive in there to see if I have it 😂
Nutmeg Gaming yeah, I tried doing the compact storage idea but my game started running slow so I started shredding all the canisters with the resources still inside. Cleared up about 1 Mb of space on the save file which surprisingly made a HUGE difference in frame rate. I figured I don’t need that many resources in storage since one of the fun parts about Astroneer is discovery and being able to FIND and MAKE what you need.
Maybe a better fix (for the 1st setup) : I saw one person using a medium soil canister as a timer (and 1 full small canister) : Storage sensor on it, triggered when canister is "empty or not empty" ; which triggers back the canister (link to it) to output mode. Then input mode, etc.. (It works nice) For a longer time between toggles, maybe use 2 medium canisters with more small canister ? (didn't try this one yet)
The turbine activation is a really neat idea but needed a little more work, the randomness is good, but it really should just cycle the power instead of being wind = on, no wind = off. The bugs with the auto arms have probably been sorted out by now so this might be useless, but I think this could have been easily achieved by connecting the button repeater to a count repeater rather than another button repeater. The count repeater should be set to 2 and be "primed" with 1 pulse before connecting. Then when the wind comes OR stops, the power repeater will send a signal to the button repeater, which send another signal out and shut the power off. A second signal will go to the "primed" count repeater which will then trigger it, sending a pulse back to the button repeater. The button repeater will send a pulse back out to turn the power back on, and second signal will be sent to the count repeater re-priming it for another cycle I stopped playing Astroneers a bit before the automation update and recently have come back to it so idk if maybe the count repeater didn't exist at the time this video was made or you just needed some more testing with it to unlock it's full potential; but if the count repeater did exist during this time, and works as I imagine it to, the system should work as I described, although this was just a logic experiment for me and I have not tested it in-game nor even ever used any automation components yet, I just have some slight experience with similar logic systems from other games. With any luck the circuit works and can provide you with the solution I have no doubt you were quite frustrated to not have found, and can relieve that somewhat however long-since significantly faded I'm sure
Cannot WAIT to go home and make that compact sorting system! It floors me everyday how many things I just haven't thought of doing to make my Astroneer life so much easier. As soon as I see it, it's just like "Omg... DUH!"
If you put a medium canister and a medium storage silo on the same platform you can then use a storage sensor to toggle the canister to fill or empty the silo. Then you have another sensor to detect the silo being "full or not full" which will quickly turn toggle whatever it is connected too.
hi z found another cool thing with the arms. if you place them on a large rover with a large silo they collect loose items on the ground as you drive around, scrap, loose resources, bodies, small bites
My question would be: regardless of what size container you use why would you need 36 of them? Most of those materials, raw mats like Hematite, aren't used for recipes.
You should try to use a storage sensor that hooks from the button repeater, to the storage that is on your rover or some other kind of storage, and when the storage sensor senses that the storage is empty, it sends a signal to the button repeater to stop the auto arms from moving.
For the second one is better if you connect each canister to a different button this will make the state change and put this button near each resource on the “gigantic platform “( the one that has a lot of space for items of one space) so it will work like a source caller
Use Medium canisters on your XL platform C's instead of Large resource canisters. That way you can probably sort 6-7 resources per XL platform C's instead of only 3 per platform. You can probably use a filtered arm from those medium canisters (using a storage sensor to toggle) to take it to a Large resource canister.
Get a XL Shredder, soil centrifuge, auto arms, small printer, large rescource canister, and trade platform turn soil into scrap by using the soil centrifuge to make resin and printer to make into canisters and canisters to scrap and scrap to materials then boom infinite resources from soil.
I have a system that is in the middle of yours. Not very automated, but easy to pull out resources and easy to stock resources. Its not the best of both worlds but also not the worst of both worlds. Worlds being take in and take out resources. But its pretty functional.
You could probably reset the arms by using 2 8 slot storages and 2 arms feeding into the two. Then use the storage readers to shut one off when one is full and they should go back and forth putting items into the opposite storage. Then you could use the signal to reset the other arms.
2 sensors linked might work. One detecting the wind turbine state change and the other set to always turn on. That way the wind turbine will give the reset signal but it will turn back on immediately. Brings to mind a lot of Minecraft Redstone logic circuits. I'm sure you could look at the design of a Redstone hopper clock and work something out
You can make a solar/generator auto mix by using solar during the day and putting a power sensor down so once the day ends it will send a signal that will turn on all the generators
they should make item conveyers that can have items put on manually or put on by arms but will not attach to platforms and at the end it will drop on to the ground and an arm can pick the items up an put them somewhere These could be used for longer distance item travel but would cost something like rubber and steel but you would have to make multiple to make it longer I would really like to see this so you could use an auto collector and transport the materials automatically to the base I would really like to see this in the game
But sir....if you combine it with the auto shredder build from One last midnight AND have multiple trading rockets, shouldn't you be able to automate resources?????????
I love the small, or should it be medium, autosorter. Will be incorporating it in my usual play world. Have to say it didn't take long to sort my 1st world. Just put 1 of what I wanted the canister to hold and kept moving it to different platforms when it stopped eating resources. Probably won't be gathering much more in that world so that was plenty. Took a few of the canisters with me when I headed to the core. Should probably have taken more. Maybe next time.
I play astroneer on xbox and I was coming up on making almost 100 nanocarbon alloy for when the update dropped but my game is super laggy with the update and I'm waiting for them to fix it before I do any of the update stuff.
Are you try the drill rover thing. It like when you use a rover and have those canister attact to you rover then you just get that item so you cant get annoying organic. Sorry my english are very bad
u can make like auto sorting thing on type b large platform and leave like 2 eamty spaces put the button on one that will turn the arm on and off and the second spot will be for recources u want as it will fly right to the empty spot u take it and done
Why couldn't you drive the truck alongside the canisters all in a row? by the time you got to the end in theory you should be empty? it would be a lot less complicated and more consistent.
Couldn't you put the power sensor near the power source for the sorter because if all the arms stopped wouldnt that cut the power usage which is what you could use to 'trip the system' so to speak?
couldnt you make something that takes items from one storage to another and checks if one is full to create a clock? and after that reverse the action with an other arm that also gets powered by the check
Would empty not empty on a storage sensor on each arm for each bank of 3 large containers do it? If the containers in that bank pick up the resource id doesn't trigger not empty so the arm stays dormant but if the resource backs up the arm will be turned on and move the resource.
I think you don't have to turn it on and off if you just have storage on the platforms so the canisters and the arms can take it so there is no yams cya and have a good day
Hate that the stream is when it's 2am in my country. Know it's not your fault and I actually watch it when I am up for work. But every morning, when I wake up I see the notification.
that is all that hard to get. use scrap and the grinder things and the medium canister and then just keep making something to put in the grinder. i do that for titanium because im lazy 🤗(its 12:30am cut me some slack)
i make a new save and delete my old one every 2 yrs so i think ima go for the small much cheaper sorting system and i really like the desingn good job z!!
You need something that changes states(on/off). RTF is constant state, and solar panels are too long between state changes. You only need one wind turbine for the timer though, so why not make one? You can also look at Minecraft Redstone builds to see how many of these items can be chained together. Two storage can probably be looped in such a way as to make a customizable timer. Like a Redstone hopper clock, but there are other options available as well
I like how this dude doesnt have like a very very large amount of subscribers but like his content is really good, his skills in astroneer is also remarkable.
I'm currently trying to automate the soil centrifuge to produce ammonium for me. But i cant get any sensors to activate based on any changing conditions. Any ideas??
How do you use and get the special visors? (The ones with special designs on them [not to be confused with the colored visors which are: golden visor, silver visor, blue tint one i forget the name, purple tint one i also forget the name, and the galaxy visor] for example: the non mirror blue one with something that looks like a solar system that moves on it) i have no idea how you get and use them because in the design astronaut menu tab it dosent say anything about special visors.
I used to play astroneer all the time but ever since I've stopped there has been so many amazing updates. Good work z1
Then come back
same
Same
So if I want an update I tell you to get off
Same
Finally, turning something on and off fixes it
The reason tech support always starts with that is because it's not only simple, but because it commonly DOES work
It literally always works that way. I hate it, but it works.

Thanks dude I needed a timer like this but I didn’t know how to build it.
I used storage senser and butten with resources consider with 32 of something and there you have a timer of 32ish secs
All you have to do is have arm and storages in a circle with a storage sensor on one of the storages set to empty / not empty
I have also almost finished my version of the storage system in the video in survival. See profile pic
this is way more complicated than need be.

Make everything cost nano carbon alloy
But it doesn’t make it level or flat just on an angle so it does nothing

@@yprinxe they litterally said that in the vide

I would really like to see this in the game
Astroneer need to add a tool to get truly flat surfaces. It would be very helpful.
It is basically the same as a Minecraft red stone automatic storage system, nice!
It seems obvious, but "hybrid" your system. Start with a compact sorter for rare items and add a some large ones downstream for the common items.
Learnt a lot from this, thanks

Nice contraption! I will build it on survival, eventually. I just wanna know: does it still glitch out in 2022? Or does it cause lag?
Use the small resource canisters on a rover so you can get a bunch of like compound or resin but not get any organic

I love the compact one, just swapout when they fill. Certainly better than my random holes in the ground 😂
remember the furnace duplication glitch. I wonder if something similar could be done with the arms and the resource canisters
i love it!
So can we instead of connecting the wind turbine, can we connect an RTG? I have so many rtg's...
Like a Redstone hopper clock, but there are other options available as well
@@blackoak4978 yeah I already noticed and used the wind turbine. Thanks bro appreciate it though.
I like how this dude doesnt have like a very very large amount of subscribers but like his content is really good, his skills in astroneer is also remarkable.
i instantly thought about a minecraft sorter thing
Once you get like 1 or 2 nanocarbon you can get a lot
Pretty long ago since the video is released but im thinking wind turbine and power sensor
Just have large storages with an arm carrying it to the compact auto sort containers:D I'm guna do it
I"m glad I haven't ran into any issues with the arms working. But I'm on my own server so maybe that's why?
how do you get the wires???
Mumbo Jumbo of Astroneer
"Does a Girl Scream!" I LOVE AUTOMATION AND SORTING!
I’m the one who gave the idea of using a wind turbine to restart all the arms.
SMB give him a medal of wit.
Has anyone notice that on x box when you packed up a thumper drill your game crashes.
The workaround is to lay the thumper on its side, turn it off then package it.
I'm currently trying to automate the soil centrifuge to produce ammonium for me. But i cant get any sensors to activate based on any changing conditions. Any ideas??
Is he going to do the event
Is the automation update out for xbox yet
Yup
Is the robot a free suit?
you cah make the power sensor turn on and off almost instantly so it resets instead of turning off
How do you do that ? What do you link the power sensor to ?
It’s like 11:21 pm in australia
How do you use and get the special visors? (The ones with special designs on them [not to be confused with the colored visors which are: golden visor, silver visor, blue tint one i forget the name, purple tint one i also forget the name, and the galaxy visor] for example: the non mirror blue one with something that looks like a solar system that moves on it) i have no idea how you get and use them because in the design astronaut menu tab it dosent say anything about special visors.
Do more hardspace
Just made my first nanocarbon alloy
I know this is a 3 month old comment, but congrats on making nanocarbon! What did you use it for?
When does this update drop for ps4
