i did this with a T platform and it works well.... holds the research chamber, rtg right next to it and then the arm at the end of it.... the spacing on the T platform is _perfect_ for the auto arm to reach the circle of it. Self contained little pod on one platform that is easy to move around.

Now you got a full-sized startup set that fits on your backpack! It is suitable for literally any purpose, except for node activating
Listen , if you research astronium and before its over you cancel it, put it through a resource canister and place it back in the research chamber , it comes back with full research
He didn't actually need to make it. He could have filled the offending slots with useless junk and the arm would have just held onto an item until the chamber was cleared.
I have one of those too! Most people hate the idea because it takes a half an hour for only 1000 bytes, but Its better in bulk. I have 2 extractors with full green bars feeding into 16 research centers with 20 RTGs. I get 16k per 30 minutes and love it.

Looking at the system below, you can add a battery sensor that would wait till the batteries are full to turn on the arm. Otherwise the arm is going to constantly drain energy while it's on. In addition I don't know if there is a sensor that detects when the research station is done, but it would be awesome
I still don't see the point in expanding the medium storage, having it flat just uses more room... unless you feel like you really need to see both sides at the same time (i usually just change camera angle w/o needing to expand it)
The soil centrifuge cab be automated with 2 button repeaters connected to each other with one connected to the centrifuge. Then all you have to do is have a soil canister and small generators with a little storage. That would be a constant early game power source. It would still need to be periodically filled with soil, but it would work.
I never thought about this, and I am doing a new save for the automation initiative and I just landed on glacio. I already started my research base thing with all the container opening, but this would be so much better! Im gonna set up 3 or 4 of these so Ill have easy bytes, since its 1000 per research. I just did something similar but more compact although less efficient. 1 large platform B, 1 research, 1 arm, 1 medium storage, 4 batteries, 1 small wind turbine, 1 small solar panel. Everything fits on the platform and pretty consistently stays powered up, but sometimes it runs out of juice but only for a little bit. Having a bunch of these around or on different planets will make good money. Be sure to change to 2 wind or 2 solar depending on which planet you’re on.
how about put another arm leading from the storage to the research table. Therefore you will get a constant supply and you will be able to scan what isnt being used.
CORRECTION: it should work, but the empty spaces in the medium storage have taken priority over the research chamber. Either fill those in or place the batteries in the platform slots and just connect the turbines with the cables.

Pretty sweet to see 1000 1000 1000 pop up randomly from Atrox core research bytes every couple of minutes power free

They grab and load items as you drive by including scrap buried below ground. Vehicle automation seams to be a missing topic in all the Astroneer automation videos. Wish I could show you the screen shot! It’s fun driving and the arms just poke out and pull items. I put two silos on top back and two on rear. It loads all 4. Enjoy!
If you can bring zinc to with you make a Delay Repeater and Proximity Repeater. Paired together in range of the research items they can do infinite gathering. Simplest system I can think of. With a 3 item spawn that's over 1000 bytes. The repetitions will be very slow though.
Z I know you probably don’t play astroneer anymore, but if you put any type of gas that is partially empty Gas on the chemistry lab and restart your game it refills. It worked for me on Xbox.
honestly unless you got the geode growths worth more than 300 (or netting more than 40 research per minute) Astronium is a better solution. Just manually (or Auto Drill for more gain) up a medium (or large if you have them) container, fill it up, and take it back to base, setting up a similar auto-arm to pull Astronium out of the container and put it into research chamber, which it will only have to do 1 time every 30 minutes (making the 32, technically 34 storage of the medium container, about 17 real hours, netting 40 Research/minute every minute along the way.
I'm not doing much exploring right now, just using the auto extractors to get some bulk collection going. Because of that I'm only seeing the small research items for the most part. That made this a prime idea for me. I just set up 1 RTG powering 2 research stations and two auto arms collecting from 2 respawnable research nodes close together by one of my main tunnels. If I can afk research as well as resources, why wouldn't I? Btw, as soon as you said "auto arm" I figured out how you were going to make it work, lol
U can get infinite organic if u use a lot of medium soil canisters paired with a soil centrifuge with button repeater clock with auto arm behind soil centrifuge to put in storage or something
Since the small research samples of glacio and novus have similar value, why not putting it on novus with some solar panels, a few batteries and some wire extenders to bring it underground where research happens?

For any of you late gamers i have a better way you head down to the lowest layer of atrox without hitting the core you can find 1000 byte ones down there but set it up with an rtg so yeah easier(for my late gamers) :)
i Realized i wasted time making this, Just get a proximity repeater and delay repeater, Set the delay repeater next to what you want, ( including plants especially them as they respawn fast and use only plants that have more than 1 ) Set the delay all the way to 25, put the proximity repeater on top ( making sure whatever u want to research that can be researched by hand is in proximity ) and turn it on, then just go on do whatever and INFINETLY cheaper

I'd be curious if the auto-arm drops what it's holding on the floor if it loses power while holding something. It might cause issues if it does, although nothing that hooking it up to base power using the small platform Type A won't solve.
They should really add an expending menu for the crafting stations. It’s kind of messy to look through all the blueprints we have.

Yep - early game (on Sylva before going off-planet) replace RTG with wind (caves) or solar (surface/mountains). Place it and forget it!!

If there's more wind outside the cave, you could make a platform with wind turbines and and use power extenders.

My idea for storage is the same as you but smelted resources go behind smelter basic resources behind printers etc
This video is old, but you can actually put resources on the spare spaces. That's how I did it
