For "You in Me": The whole concept is about a relationship where one of the sides doesn't want to let go of an already over relationship. The concept is very present in the lyrics, you can sense both of their perspectives. There's obsession and denial on the girls' part, while the guys are tired and want to let go of the relationship. The symbolism of the dead bodies and the girls still being around them while singing "i need you in my life"; "You are the only one I love", etc, reflects the hope of the girls to still have their parters by their side, even if it's just them that still believe in the relationship. Also, a little important detail that gives a little hint a the whole theme is the word that you can see in the MV "apego", which means "attachment" in Spanish, so it pretty much connects the song, the lyrics, the acting, and the MV together.

20:25 I might have an answer for the whole predebut thing. A lot of companies invest a tonshit of money in training and preparing idols for debut. For groups like KARD, with the uncommon aspect of being coed, the company probably wanted to 'soft-launch' the group just to make sure their investment was going to be worth it and gage what the general reception was surrounding a coed group with their specific sound. Many other coed groups have not been successful in the past. And given how competitive the Kpop scene is, with some groups not even surviving to a year before being disbanded, DSP media might have wanted some insight on how KARD might do before proceeding to pour more money into the project.
Also, any sort of pre-debut content helps the public get more invested in the group and once the 'official debut' happens they are more willing to show their support in monetary ways. And as you pointed out, some other marketing stuff regarding Korean and international charts, weekly music shows and all that jazz.
    Addition:
1:29:17 The girls and J.Seph don't have official solo work but they have had some "solo-ish" appearances. As Alex said, Jiwoo was on Good Girl, Somin featured in Hui's song 'Swim Good' for the show Breakers (the performance for that is deadly), Jiwoo and Somin both substituted Leslie Garcia in the Korean version and performances of Super Junior's song 'Lo Siento' so they performed in weekly kpop shows with Super Junior for a few weeks. I don't think J.Seph has had any other "solo" appearances outside of KARD, specially with his military service and all.
Love your commitment to an actual deep dive and your honest opinions! Hope you keep enjoying the good music

That makes a lot of sense and in the moment I didn't realize that there must be so much that goes into a group because it's like an investment. Thank for you for the comment and hopefully you'll join us on future groups!

I actually like Inferno a lot because the boys put it out before they realese the Red Moon album as just a song they made one day and even shoted the video when they were on tour one day an that's it. And then Hiddens liked the song so they included it on the album and if you hear the official audio the instrumental is different and makes the song more unique. Fun fact: Jiwoo's rap in Enemy was wrote by JSeph since the song was actually a OT4 but later was given to Somin and Jiwoo as a unit

On the topic of a boy group to go for next, it would actually make sense to go with Stray Kids (SKZ). KARD and SKZ are super friendly and always promote each other's songs. Bang Chan, the leader of Stray Kids, is part of the Big Tiddy Committee as well.

Why KARD in particular had 3 pre-debut projects is because the company was not sure if the group would do good. BM talked about some of it in interviews before. Long story short - they were almost out of the company and this was a test/ last attempt to keep them in the company. If people didn't react the way they did with them accumulating millions of views, they would be essentially not exist today.
They didn't promote these 3 projects. They didn't go on shows, they only released some videos from a private club where they performed and had a vlive.

  • @shauntif
    @shauntif 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

Nice reaction! Very long comment from a hidden since don't recall era incoming, sorry in advance
I know you guys talked about it in the video but yes each member of KARD represents a playing card and a suit. BM is the King and clubs, J.Seph is the Ace and spades, Somin is black JokeR and hearts and Jiwoo is color JokeR and diamonds. Each letter corresponds to a member BM-K, J.Seph-A, Somin and Jiwoo-R and fans are Hiddens representing the D making KARD complete. When talking about their roles BM is the king which he explains is the most dependable and strong card and the foundation of the team. J.Seph describes the Ace card as the highest or lowest card given the moment so sometimes he can be the "lowest" card supporting the team or the highest card bringing his talent to the forefront. Similarly Somin says the Black Joker can be the best card in some situations so she does hear part with her vocals. Jiwoo the Color joker says she makes KARD's music colorful with her vocal tone, rapping, singing and dancing. Wild KARD was the name of their tours up until this recent comeback where the tour was called Playground.
They had 3 predebut releases because being a coed group is not stable for kpop. so before officially debuting they released 3 songs to test the waters. They didn't promote their predubt songs they just released them and the mv. eventually they toured with those songs and some covers to decide if debuting them would be worth it or if they would scrap the idea and go back to planning something else. As for other groups idk why they do predebut releases but I can see why kard did. The songs were singles that were eventually included on their debut album, so they have a same style because they were curating the sound of their first album. Theyve also been very open about the fact that its hard to find producers who are willing to compose and write music for coed groups. So during this era they were using the same producer, Nassun. This was also the driving force for BM to start composing music for the group, his first released song as a producer was dumb litty.
The company was originally planning to debut the guys (BM and J.Seph) as a rap duo, Somin would've probably debuted as as a soloist or be placed into another group(she had already been in 2 before KARD) and Jiwoo wasn't even a part of the company yet. The founder of DSP had debuted a coed group back in the 90s (ZAM) and wanted to see if he could do it again. KARD was actually the last group he formed before he passed away in 2018. BM, J.Seph and Somin had been in the company for 4-5 years and were good friends so they were easy to make the base of the group. Jiwoo had trained in a few companies but most of her time was spent in FNC and she even trained in YG for a little while. On the day she auditioned for DSP they asked her to record the demo for oh nana and she was added to the KARD line-up. This was in October so only 2 months before oh nana was released. so the predebut era was also testing the members as a group and seeing if they meshed well. Fun fact the members met Jiwoo for the first time on BM's 24th birthday, he has called her KARD's missing puzzle piece and his birthday present and I think that's such a cute way to think of it.
Coed groups were pretty popular in the 90s, the most notable being roora. The coed concept fell out of grace when a group named S#ARP had a huge scandal. After that there was still a few in the second generation of kpop like coed school but they never saw the popularity that KARD has. So KARD has been the most successful coed group since the 90s and first generation of kpop pretty much.
As for the Hola Hola concept, it's just them having fun lol. Its not a song or video that has a "concept" really, think wave by ateez.
As for You In Me the entire album (You & Me) is a cohesive story about a toxic relationship. You in me is a song about the girls being toxic, obsessive and passive lovers while the guys want out of the relationship. Throughout the video you can see that the guys arent reacting to anything the girls are doing so the hints were subtle building up to the reveal that the guys were dead. But of course its a metaphorical death representing how they feel the relationship has died yet the girls are still holding on. And for the raps they are talking about feeling suffocated to death in a relationship and you cant really do that lightly
Ride on the wind was filmed on Jeju Island in Korea:)
Inferno was a song BM had produced and released on his SoundCloud way before the release of the red moon album. They had some downtime when they were on tour in Houston and filmed this with their own cameras for fun and released it on the channel before it was ever meant to be added to the album. The version on the album has been cleaned up production wise. So in comparison to the girls video, its not an actual production. Enemy was made with intentions of being a group song on the album but everyone agreed that it really suited the girls so it was made a unit song. Because it was fully planned out from the beginning it had choreo, an actual produced video and generally a higher quality vs inferno that they just decided to record one day during tour for a song that was initally just made and released on SoundCloud that was added to the album to pair with the girls unit song. The raps in enemy were also written by J.Seph:)
Way With Words(the album with Gunshot on it) did have the members heavily involved and credited but they have always had a large say in the creative direction of their work. They get to pick which songs are included in albums, help with the creative direction of music videos (dumb litty for example, Jiwoo was heavily involved in the styling). I don't remember any backlash over gunshot but I could just be misremembering.

Your comment was great to read thank you for that. Just to add to it, while kard is the most sucessfull coed idol group they arent the most successfull coed group out of korea. Akmu (brother and sister duo) is one of the most successfull ones, urban zakapa (vocal trio) are chart killers and i think koyote (1st gen) is still doing well. Also a question since im not remembering correctly. Wasnt the ceo that conviced bm to stay and created kard a woman?

so Gunshot was produced by BM, and it's about bullying and abuse. in the mv, there are 2 versions of kard, one that's mean and abusive and the one that's abused by them. Those versions live in different worlds. You can notice at 1:48:14 that that´s the abused ver of kard, being watched by cameras pointed like guns (cyberbullying). Then the good ver of somin 1:48:27 in a room filled with CCTV and mannequins being watched by her mean ver(stalking). 1:48.42 That's the mean ver of BM, the bystander. 1:48:59 jiwoo's mean ver trapped in a cage also surrounded by mannequins and then proceeds to destroy them (physical violence). 1:49:02 jiwoo's mean ver makes sure everyone listens to her mean words (verbal abuse). 1:49:24 J.seph's mean version, the keyboard warrior that hides his face behind a mask. 1:50:02 somin's mean ver harassing ppl with her sharp pencil. 1:50:13 BM's mean ver is aggressive and uses his brush and ink to hurt people.
Now, the good ver of kard is in front of the camera, their mean ver is always behind it and watching. They're on different worlds, yet both versions of Jiwoo manage to be face-to-face. then the mean version gets shot by the good ver... But she actually wasn't. It's a paper gun. Remember I said they are in different worlds? How would you kill someone that you hate but is in another country? In your dreams/imagination only. That's what happened, that gun was the representation of language and words, cuz words hurt. That's why they say "Your words are like a gunshot". The gun was able to transcend realities and hurt people on both sides.
Gunshot is part of the mini album 'Way with Words', to show that words can do good or bad, depending on how u use them. BM actually has a clothing brand called StaydiumLA and right after Gunshot's release, he released a clothing line called 'Healers', for ppl who suffered/survived these types of abuse as an anti-bullying and anti-discrimination campaign and donated the profit to an organization focused in this topic, as he did before with his clothing line made to support victims of breast cancer, the Big Tiddie Gang

I've been listening to KARD since they released Oh Na Na and to answer the question "why release so many pre-debut tracks?" - if I remember correctly, KARD was already formed in 2015, or maybe even earlier, but their label postponed their debut for some reason. So KARD, tired of constant empty promises, decided to take matters into their own hands. They produced the songs themselves, wrote the lyrics and created choreographies for the pre-debut songs (that's probably why they are so cringy, lol). It wasn't a stupid move at all, because KARD had already gathered quite a lot of iternational fans before their official debut. Finally, a year later, they debiuted with Hola Hola. The melody from Hola Hola is actually a mix of the melody of Oh Na Na and Don't Recall - two songs that kind of made them stand out before their debut, so they decided to pay tribute to them in this way (and, of course, the company didn't have to do much because of it).
I don't know how much truth is in my words, but I remember hearing such information at that time. If I got something wrong, please correct me.
