KARD is so talented and they all seem like the sweetest people. They really love each other and will do anything for fans. They also are very down to earth and they love to push boundaries which is a rarity in kpop. They are always willing to try something new and to challenge people's perceptions of what a kpop group should be. They are very open with their thoughts, beliefs, and experiences. Jiwoo has posted pictures of herself at drag shows and is friends with some queens (in a country that is very conservative and is still very reluctant to embrace LGBTQ+ individuals). Their choreographies have both masculine and feminine moves that are done by both genders and they don't get embarrassed or shy about it but instead are rather proud to do it. BM frequently discusses topics in his vlives that no idol would EVER talk about publicly (when he lost his v-card, etc) because he wants to normalize idols rather than putting them on a pedestal. Truly an iconic group.
It's interesting that you mentioned the co-ed thing being a novel concept in the US/western music scene because it's just as unusual in Korea as well. KARD is the only active co-ed group in kpop; other groups have been made over the years, but none of them had any sort of longevity. KARD just had their seven year anniversary and the fact that they've managed to hold on this long and be successful all these years when other co-ed groups haven't been able to just speaks to how great they are. That being said, it took a long time for them to get traction in the kpop scene and for years they've been ignored by Korea; the fact that they are so popular overseas is what has kept them afloat all these years. It's been seven years and KARD still hasn't gotten their first win on a Korean music show (which is one of the milestones for groups). They also run into the issue that there is no category for "co-ed" in Korean award shows so they don't qualify for anything other than the large major awards, where they are then competing with the giants of the industry from large companies.
It’s so tough which just sucks because they are amazing!! This guide really made us fall in love with them personally too- will definitely be checking out more and supporting them however we can ❤️
