With regards to Allergy. I think you missed the point if you think is just them complaining about not being pretty.
Minnie is the fitness influencer in this story line, while she is admired online she is lonely irl.
Miyeon is the pretty youtuber, but her bf is taking by Minnie, making Miyeon think she isn't good enough, even though Yuqi and Shuhua envy her.
Soyeon on the other hand also feels lonely, and seeing the pretty girls post about social event online, makes her belive that she need to be pretty to be liked like them.
In reality she is just a nerd that need a bit of confidence. The cb was made as a video series with multiple episodes explaning the storyline ending with Allergy and Queencard.
It not a song about looks but about how envy is pointless, cause whoever you envy envies someone else.
And as kpop idols there might not be people on this earth more criticised on their looks daily than them (meaning all idols). So yeah they might not feel pretty enough sometimes, they are only human, why do their feelings not count just because you don't agree with it.

@ervtron That fair. But Idle songs are definitely songs that get better we you dive deeper into them. Sometimes you might think Soyeon is just bad at English, but then you learn that she want a certain word to be pronounced differently to flow better. I mean, there is many English songs with weird or misheard/mispronounced lyrics, rarely hear people complain about that.
Also, Cube is most likely holding them back with certain lyrics. I heard there was a lot more things Soyeon wanted to say in Tomboy but had to cut it out/change because of them.

Just wanna say one thing: with Tomboy, the girls came with such anger after losing Soojin, and that feeling went through the whole album. There’s a reason of the album being named “I Never Die”.
And I don’t think it’s coincidence that I-DLE songs have become more social commentary since losing Soojin. Hence the strong concepts that you’ve seen in Nxde, Allergy and Queencard.

    • @kingmanic
      @kingmanic หลายเดือนก่อน

Also tomboy in Asia was far more negative a term than in the west. It means a girl who doesn't know her place and acts like a boy and that's bad in a confusion way. The song says fuck you, I do what I want.

KDA is a virtual music group made by Riot Games to promote the game, League of Legends. They feature kpop artists and that is how I got into kpop world. Blackpink was the first group I got into and listened to the most initially. A lot of people got into kpop through them and BTS as well. These groups must be worth checking out as they introduced so many of us to Kpop.

I thought I'd add some of my thoughts, even though some others have already expressed some of it. Sorry in advance for the essay length :D
Uh-Oh: I am surprised to hear you thought it did not lean enough into 90s rap. The set, the props, the clothes, the camera angles, I even thought all the members did well, though I guess you have more expertise there than I do. Would that you had explained it better. And as for Soyeon's mic on fire scene, she was paying homage to Rakim: there is an almost identical scene in his When I B On Tha Mic.
Hwaa: It is all traditional. Not just the instruments. K-pop tends to mix English and Korean, even just Korean (at least in South Korea) has a lot of English borrowings; but there are none used in Hwaa. The grammar used is also a bit archaic. And, if memory serves me, the girls learned ganggangsullae, a traditional Korean dance, to use it with Hwaa. Some further notes regarding Hann as well: This is a trilogy that started with Hann in 2018, continues with another song ALSO called Hann that is on the same album as Hwaa (I Burn; though this newer Hann sadly does not have an MV), and flows into Hwaa. The thing you need to know about is what "han" is first: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_(cultural) "Han is frequently translated as sorrow, spite, rancor, regret, resentment or grief, among many other attempts to explain a concept that has no English equivalent." But the same pronunciation also has other meanings as well. The 2018 Hann is originally named 한(一), where the Chinese character in parentheses gives the intended alternate meaning: "one". The song sings about getting over an ex who hurt you: "I erase your trace in my bruised heart", and the MV styling is a desert. This is why the English translation is "Hann (Alone)". The second Hann, on this album, is titled 한(寒); here, the Chinese character says "cold" (with the English translation "Hann (Alone in Winter)". The lyrics there are about feeling as if your heart is frozen, realising that you were lying to yourself about erasing the ex from the memory, knowing that you still think of them every single day, and you wonder if the winter in your heart will ever turn to spring. Here's where Hwaa comes in, with its multiple meanings, again explicitly stated in Chinese characters: 화(火花). Both characters are pronounced "hwa" in Korean. The first means "fire", but is also used metaphorically for "anger" ("I am angry" is literally translated as "fire is coming out"). The second is "flower". The combination of the two characters ("fire flower") means "spark" in Chinese and Japanese (pronounced "huǒhuā" and "hibana", respectively), though it is not used in Korean (but if you replace the Chinese characters with native korean words, you get 불꽃 "bulkkot", a word for "fireworks", which was Soyeon's hope for this song's impact - this meaning is present in Japanese and Chinese as well, but the characters are reversed: 花火 "hanabi" and "huāhuǒ"). The song uses all of these meanings: wanting to spark up the fires of anger to burn up the leftover resentment ("han"), and warm up the heart so flowers of new love can blossom again. Super cool, super deep, in the way how all the wordplay about "han" and "hwa" was used. And it's not the end either: Soyeon and Minnie said that Moon was postponed to be on this album, because it matches the mood, as you look at the sky and... feel. The rest of the songs are also meaningful in their own place in the album. In Miyeon's words, "We tried to express this album as cold winter, hot fire and beautiful but stinging flowers. It also has the meaning of overcoming the scars of separation and being in full bloom again.”
Tomboy: They weren't trying to be "bad". They were pissed off: one of their members, best friends to some of them, had to leave the group, never to be explicitly mentioned (though there is a reference to her in most comebacks since: 6th baloon in Tomboy, Soyeon's 5th diamond in My Bag, the animated girl with a mole under her eye in Nxde, Marilyn Monroe as her favourite person in both Nxde and Allergy, the alien/Soojin who crashed in a spaceship/tabloids ultimately leaving the boy/( )I‑DLE to protect him from the soldiers/public), due to baseless rumours, and their own continued existence was in question (CUBE said if that album didn't do well, they were done). And as for the meaning of "tomboy" itself, it is less about being queer, more about that they don't want to be a "girl group" as a genre; as they say in the lyrics, "Neither man nor woman, just me, ( )I‑DLE". Don't put us in a box. We'll do what we want. As for the expletive... Tomboy earned seven wins. With the expletive left uncensored, it would have earned zero, as the song would not be played on TV programmes. And. remember, they needed Tomboy to do well, including selling it to general public (...or else!). They do perform it uncensored in concerts though.
Allergy is only partly about Soyeon "not pretty" comments. You got some of it after Queencard, but let me elaborate a bit. Allergy is showing the viewers that even the ones you are jealous of, those who seemingly have perfect lives, have their own problems you don't get to see. Minnie, the "Jane Fonda" of the video, doesn't have friends; Miyeon's crush is going out with Minnie instead; Yuqi and Shuhua are the Mean Girls "posse", with no confidence of their own. Also, purely on the visual side, the MV is recreating the movies such as She's All That, where the obviously gorgeous protagonist is shown as being "ugly" with frizzy hair and thick glasses. Finally, it is not just Soyoen and Hwasa who get hate, all idols do. FFS, aespa's Karina, Le Sserafim's Chaewon, Blackpink's Jennie... some of the most stunning ladies I have ever seen... get the "ugly" comments. Of course, it is a fraction of a percent, but given the sheer number of comments they get, that is a lot of hate comments. And unless you have inhuman confidence, it is those toxic comments that stand out, no matter how many good ones you get. In Queencard, the whole MV is Soyeon's anaesthaesia dream, where she realises the truth about what confidence is. Both MVs are meant to be camp though, and should be viewed through that lens. Also, why is "life and limb" okay, but "boob and booty" is not? :P

I understand what you're saying about Allegy because its hard to believe that kind of message from people who are basically trained to show off confidence, but even in interviews and when they're messing around in videos it's clear that even if they ARE idols, they do notice and feel uncertain about themselves. They are idols, but they are humans. They show off on social media but those pics, stories, videos... Its what the industry tells them to show but we dont know whats going on.
There has been moments when they dont tell they're feeling sad or lonely but the members notice and react on social media because THEY KNOW each other. Its not about status or expectations, its knowing that you share the same thing: You're expected to BE something, but you ARE something. They know, respect and support each other and thats why they've so many beautiful moments like Allegy, Tomboy, Nude, My bag. They acknowledge each other in so many diff levels, its not about "You're pretty you cant understand how someone 'ugly' would feel". Its just like you said: Perception. If you feel, think or asocciate with negative emotions about yourself, there's weight in you words, in your message and its beautiful coming from someone who's thaught not to be authentic but conventional.

Producers have said you have to be skinny like Ariana, which is what those lyrics are referencing. After getting plastic surgery, she got blasted by everyone for getting the procedure, calling her a botched version of another idol.

Also to add on Alex's part on liking everything about queencard but not queencard the song, it's maybe because it's intention it's to not take itself too seriously like the mv was inspired by romcoms comedy's that even though they are lighthearted they leave you with a message just like queencard.
Sometimes is quite funny to me how people react to things and are almost near the point but almost always miss because of biases or prejudice like a line like "my boob and booty is hot" it's a direct quote from a romcom movie I Feel Pretty.
Like it puts me off the way people just write off Soyeon as someone who would just write "dumb or nonsese lyrics" like I get that sometimes the message doesn't completely lands for people who's first language is english, but for people who's language isn't we have to dig deeper.
It seems rooted in racism and instead of wanting to understand any further ya'll just dismissed it by wanting her to adapt to you instead of the audience adapting to them it kinda sends the message of well we are not gonna accept the diverse way that people have of speaking english.
I see how this criticism of lyrics is applicable to other groups wich have american writers writing awful lyrics, but towards (G)I-DLE no, you are overstepping and criticizing the way a Korean women speaks english and using words like cringe or awful it's just weird to me.
Hope you take this as constructive criticism.
Also they may have not said Fuc*k on Tomboy but they made a playword of a Korean word wich meant Bitc*h, one thing holding (G)I-DLE back is cube because they translate they're lyrics awfully in Nxde the actuall final lyric it's the pervert is you.
So when reacting to (G)I-DLE or another Kpop group i advice you to not review it whit a very western lence I now it's a lot to ask but a lot of their songs like Nxde and Tomboy are demmed very highly by the femminist movement in Korea, it was actually shoking that they did so well with their messages, so by what western standards may seem just them being edgy it's actually them taking an stance, but western people often ridiculize their messages watching it through this lence.
So yeah just my grain of salt, (G)I-DLE is an extremely unique and rare group hope a lot more people learn to appreciatte them, this message was mostly directed to the people wich accompanied you, not you directly you seemed very respectful and your comments on the music and production were very interesting, hope you take this into consideration.

Hey Alexa, I appreciate you giving us context on the song. We don't think that the Soyeon writes dumb/nonsense lyrics and if it was perceived that way we do apologize. Our perspectives are from a western background so we are unfamiliar then that's ok and it serves as an opportunity to learn more about it. We listen to these songs once and there are certainly things we can miss. Our job isn't to know everything that's why we rely on other people to provide a lens on how to view things.
Our comments aren't meant to enrage anyone and it serves as more of an honest discussion. We do our best to represent the groups in the best light we can but we also want to come off as genuine as possible.

@@AudioAddictionmedia Yeah, it’s okay, sorry if it came out as enraged, Kpop is very fun and interesting, and if you guys didn’t comment exactly what you comment this conversations wouldn’t be happening, so thanks for replying, I don’t particularly think any of you are racist sorry if it came out like that, you all actually commented on how sad it is that the groups have to adapt, it’s more of a broader issue about how people talk about this group or other groups specifically, it’s just feels like the repetition of the same conversation because people don’t want to do the work to understand them, and that’s okay you are reacting for fun and it’s a 2 hour video, hope all of you keep reacting to (G)-idle and other groups and have fun with it.

Thank you! Finally someone said it. Some of the reactions to the Korean English were a bit insensitive. Well I'm blaming it on ignorance and a somewhat limited worldview rather than xenophobia/racism. I'll write my own comment later to explain/add a bit more to what you already said.

I love the way Soyeon uses english, because it's how it's used in Korea just like spanglish, and I love their accents because english not being my first language, just feels great, but that's just because im not racist and i'm not racist like most of the american audience who complains about lyrics or pronounciation.

@@AudioAddictionmedia Y’all didn’t in a very you know flat out racist way, just in a very biased undertone way, mostly Alex, btw this comment was not directed at any of you that’s why it’s separate, it’s just about how much Queencard brings out such comments from people.
Actually something you’ll notice is that sadly most (G)I-dles critics are not about the music, or about their Korean lyrics or mv’s, they are mostly about the themes of their songs for not being “feminist enough” or just for show or about their english lyrics, and it’s mostly rutted in prejudice, for example your comments about the mixing or them having issues sometimes mixing genres are totally valid, specially coming from a pov from people who make music, but when people make comments about their English or their messages from a very not knowledgeable place it comes of bad, so if you can instead of downright just reacting to all their music maybe a format of reacting to the music an some more context would be best.
I actually recommend the behind of the recording of Queencard or Nxde for maybe more context, or the Genius lyrics added context.
Hope all of you keep growing as artist and reactors, kpop is really fun so just have fun with learning about it.
Ps. Your reaction didn’t make me feel bad or any type of way sorry if it came out like that, learning and appreciating other context languages is fun, don’t shoot yourself in the foot whit biases, hope you achieve your goal of learning korean, Soyeon’s worplay it’s very fun when your are able to understand it.
Lastly thanks for taking the comments lightly we are all human with biases it’s okay, y’all did a great job with the music production comments and with the interaction with the chat felt like a very light watch.
