  • Eliza embarks on an epic road trip to Missouri. After being abandoned for almost 60 years, Eliza our 40 ford Tudor does what would have seemed impossible just a year and a half ago. The first 90 miles were perfect, then we were experiencing overheating issues the remainder of our journey. The car eventually had to be towed. We met a man named Brandon Victory in Iowa who did everything possible to help us out. God bless you my friend! I only hope I can do the same for someone someday. And a big thank you to my daughter Savannah and her boyfriend Jax for coming after us. It was a great day!#f40fordepicroadtrip #abandonedcarcrossingtwostatelines ##kindnessofstrangers #overheatingflatheadford#

      @@mywaymanufacturing2817 Road trips with your classic car are usually fun and I enjoyed your trip episode.
      The full-race flathead in my 40 was originally built for my Model A and there was not much room for a fan so being a dumb teenager I skipped it.
      Living in a small town in western Washington state with zero stop-and-go traffic it worked fine in the Model A and 40. However I made one trip to Seattle in the 40 that was about 65-mile trip and found the slow pace of the Seattle traffic caused cooling issues. It did not boil over but was close. Sold the 40 before I ever figured out a fan solution.

    after my cousin totaled his 56 chevy that had a 265 V8 close ratio 4 speed 4:56 gears a friend of his gave him a 38 Ford no engine or transmission, he put the running gear with solid motor mounts from the 56 in it, and it was a screamer between stop lights in Visalia California back in the 60,s

    First of all, I am sorry to hear that Eliza overheated. This is something I think all of us old Ford guys have dealt with at one time or another, but it is always frustrating and there are multiple causes. You are, of course, the guy that made me finally figure out what was wrong with my K.R. Wilson timing fixture and repair it, and got me on the road to my obsession with these distributors (Mart's videos helped me learn how to set the distributors up. In answer to your question-YES-Absolutely there should be star type lock washers on the fixed points where they attach to the back plate and at the eccentric. I purchased a set of Echlin points, thinking that these be satisfactory, but was disappointed-the points on one side did not contact fully due to the bend in the sheet metal being incorrectly place. I had the same issue with some "no name" brand points (truthfully, they looked identical to me-both bad). I managed to get several sets of NOS Ford points and they align perfectly (I am running these now). When Eliza overheated, was she running at speed or idling? If running at speed, and assuming the radiator was not the problem (although I think it probably is), you might look at the advance mechanism. I took about seven of these distributors apart to make four good ones, and found some pretty gross mismatches of parts (the plate for the advance is supposed to match the distributor shaft-two of mine didn't), the springs for the advance weights on two of them were bent). The rollers have to roll smoothly, the mechanism has to move freely, etc. Aside from the distributor, the modern thermostats can creep up into the upper radiator hoses and jam shut, which doesn't help at all. There are also repro water pumps that move a higher volume of water (some people say this is better, some people say this is worse-it definitely helped me).

      Thanks Richard, I knew you had recently had a bunch of these apart. Who better to ask! I do not have the star washers. I am going to need to find some, I now believe that was a large part of this problem. Thank you Richard

    Have you flushed the block? My Triumph used to overheat until I flushed out the block with vinegar. Now its fine. Also kudos to Brandon in Iowa - the world needs more people like him.

      I plan on flushing it when I swap the radiator. Did you leave vinegar set in for a while? Let me know and I’ll try it . Haven’t done that before. Yes if everyone was good like Brandon. The world would be much better

    Thing is 84 years old!; it is doing great. Flatheads are infamous for some overheating but I bet you can tweak it to perfection.

    That old radiator may have a lot to do with the overheating. the flews in it has to have a lot of mineral build up in them. it almost has to be boiled out to open it up. You'll get it, just don't get her too hot. You have a good one Jeremy.

    • @mywaymanufacturing2817
      @mywaymanufacturing2817  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suppose it could be plugged pretty bad. They say aluminum has 30% more cooling capacity anyway, so that alone helps thanks for following along Junior!
