  • In this landscape photography video I take a very close look at the performance of the Olympus M.Zuiko 75 - 300 mm lens. I am capturing images of the Snowdonia mountains as seen from Anglesey to test the effectiveness of this very long range telephoto lens. I make a series of landscape photographs to examine its performance.

    If you'd like to learn more about the Anglesey, Snowdonia and North Wales places I visit for my landscape photography, you can see full details on my website in my Location Guides section at: dgriff.gallery/....

    For me that one of Caernarfon Castle was the best. Lovely image with enough contrast and it was still a fair way over the Strait from you, most impressive little lens. Your clips persuaded me to buy an EM1mk2 and I love it after the weight of my usual full-frame Canons, using a 12-40 f2.8 Pro so will look out for a 75-300 secondhand like you. Always enjoy your postings David, nothing nicer with a coffee! Thank you as ever..

      Hello John, thank you so much for watching and being good enough to make contact. Great to hear that you're enjoying your EM1, I'd be horrified if somebody bought something based on my findings and were disappointed! I'll bet the 12 to 40 f2.8 is brilliant, and if I was inclined to carry more glass about I would most certainly have that lens in my bag! 😊👍

      D Griff Gallery Good Morning David, I am really enjoying the complications of the EM1mk2. The in camera focus stacking and IBIS is incredible. Indeed that 12-40 f2.8 is my default lens but I used the cheap 40-150 mm yesterday on a grass snake in a pond and it was really very good also. Looking forward to the Welsh lockdown easing on Monday! Cheers, John

    Welcme back mate, you have been missed... I can't believe the quality of that lens at that price (even new!)

      Yes mate, I've always sort of been ready to accept the required compromises of being tight as a gnat's chuff, but this bit of kit is exceptional! 😊👍

    Well done David, happy to see your still a big MFT advocate. Tomorrow I’m picking up a Panasonic G9 MFT! Yep done with medium format and ff, to big to expensive and overkill amount of pixels that fill up my hard drive. Thanks

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bernard, yes I understand that the G9 is an excellent camera. I wonder how you get on with it after your previous medium and full frame equipment? One thing you certainly won't miss is lugging around so much heavy gear! 😊👍

      @pilsplease7561 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went with APSC and Fuji X series for lighter weight better lens options and because you have enough pixels but not enough to get huge files a raw file is like 20mb each.

    I Love this little lens. Two of my favourite pictures I have ever taken (puffins in Shetland and surfing Dolphins in Western Australia) would never have happened without this lens because a) I could never justify the cost of the equivalent reach in APS-C or full-frame b) it’s so small and light I always have it with me. Sums up while I Love Olympus actually - the best camera is the one you have with you.
    Anyway, really enjoy watching your videos, they are always inspiring, cheers

    Thanks for the video. I did find it interesting. I did notice the small bag you attach to your tripod with filters etc. Whilst I have seen it before today I finally twigged to the idea of doing it myself. So much better than foraging in a camera bag in a hurry. So all very helpful even if it was no intended. Stay safe.

      Hi Donald, you should've dropped me a line I would've told you what it was!! I'm one of these people that's quite obsessive about being well organised, it's stood me in very good stead in business for the last 40 years and by following those principles in photography it really does make life a lot easier. That little pouch has everything I might need to do stills photography, so if I grab my tripod and camera I know I have everything to hand if I haven't brought any additional baggage or equipment. 😊👍

    Interesting review David. I have an old Olympus OM series 100-200 f5 manual zoom that I use for those kinds of shots. As a landscaper manual focusing is no problem and the old OM lenses are light and extremely good IQ. They go on eBay for £30-80 but I got mine back when I used Olympus film cameras.

      Sounds like you've got a great piece of glass there Alan. If I thought about it I probably would've had a nose around on eBay and something like your suggestion would probably have been quite interesting. Although, I did have the 40 to 150 so I particularly wanted to get out to 300 😊👍

I've always been interested by this lens as I have a Lumix 45-200, which is pretty good but that extra 100mm is appealing too as I take shots of the moon now and then and it would be great for that. They have been so many times over the last couple of years, even when you and I have been out, when there's been something interesting going on on a peak four or 5 miles away. And a lens like this is perfect to pick off those shots. My 100mm just wasn't cutting it. As you know, once you start to get up out of the valley you have these amazing lines of sight that most people don't have when they don't do the hiking. So I guess that's why really long focal lengths tend not to feature matching landscapes 😊👍

    Dave, I have the 75-300 and today it rolled off my lap while sitting on a bench on to concrete rolled a couple of yards and down another 18 inch drop. I had just turn the lens hood around and it just bounced. There seem to be no damage on lens just scratches on lens hood. A good safety device if hood is backwards.

    Thanks David. Have had this lens since day 1 and have never been really excited about it like I am with my 12-100 or 40-150 pro lenses. I think this is partly due to the fact that I am trying to squeeze F4 300mm pro performance out of it. Need to try as you explain and stick to good light landscapes and push a little more in post and see what happens. Would enjoy seeing some of your computer work on these type images.

    Hi David.... Glad to see you're 'back on' as they say... In fact, I looked back at your photo that you sent to us a week or so ago... \
    My general routine in the morning is to make coffee and eat brekkies while catching up on photography channels. But I begin by checking out my news feeds from Canada and around the globe.. The bbc had a piece about a chicken factory on Anglesey. that has been stricken quite severely with this covid... which I'm certain you and your family are painfully aware. And another breakout in Germany.... Have you seen the piece? So troubling.. Working conditions in these meat factories is not pretty... When will this ever end? All right, stay well and we look forward to having you back in those mountains.. Now, back to the vid....

      Hello Jan, many thanks for your very kind encouragement and support of my channel. Yes the news here about the chicken factory has come as quite a shock as there is now talk of us remaining in a tight lockdown even when restrictions elsewhere in Wales are being lifted. But what is of more concern is that the town in which it is located is our nearest and where we do our routine shopping etc. So we're having to be even more careful than normal, especially with Mrs G being quite vulnerable! 😊👍

      Hi Rob, I tried the 40 to 150 and really enjoyed it although not with a converter. And it was that that encouraged me to look at the 300 because I found 150 just wasn't quite long enough. So I'm really happy with this combination of these two lenses. 😊👍

      It’s always a pity when an organisation with a long heritage falls by the wayside. But they have rather brought it upon themselves with some horribly inept management over the last 5 to 10 years. That said, they still do make some extremely good equipment and it’s quite possible that the new company which has bought the camera Division, and they are experts in repackaging and selling on businesses such as Sony laptops, it’s possible that they will still be around in years to come. From a personal perspective I’m not too worried because my equipment is reliable and I expect it to give me a good return on investment over quite a long period of time. I don’t expect to be looking for new gear for at least another five years 😊👍🏻

    Really nice video and very informative. I also have that same lens as well as the 14-150 and the 9-18. All of them are great lenses and very light weight. I use them mostly on an EM-10 mkii hand held and absolutely love that kit. I say that even though I do have an em-1 mkii with the 12-100 and 7-14 pro lenses. I'm finding more and more that I'm getting most of my better pictures using the smaller lighter gear not because it's better, but because I find myself using it much more because of its compact size and weight. It's just plain fun to use.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter, yes it's great to have a really comprehensive range of focal lengths without plugging round several kilos of glass! My pro lens does tend to still live on the camera body, but I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of use out of this new addition. I'm in two minds about acquiring an ultrawide as well, but I haven't missed that end of the focal range as much as the long end! 😊👍

    • @peterblackthorne1262

      D Griff Gallery I know what you mean. At one time I had I guess what some photographers refer to as the holy trinity of lenses. 7-14, 12-40 and 40-150 all f/2.8's. Even using the micro four thirds system that became too much weight and bulk for me to carry around along with the em-1 mkii. I did sell both the 12-40 and 40-150 lenses and purchased the 12-100 which I am very happy with. I did keep the 7-14 but I have to say I've maybe only used it a few times. I'm seriously considering selling that and purchasing an em-5 mkiii because of the similarity in size and weight to my current em-10 mkii which I really like while retaining most of the capabilities of the em-1 mkii. If that works for me I may end up selling the pro gear and just keeping the 9-18, 14-150 and 75-150 which would give me a very light compact system which I would probably use a lot more. My primary camera and lens would then become the em-5 with the 14-150 mm. To be honest I really can't see a difference in the quality of the photos I'm getting with the non pro glass vs the pro. Maybe it's just my 75 year old eyes. If you get a chance sometime I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you once again for responding to my original comments.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Peter, you make a very good point about the negligible difference between pro and regular glass. I think it’s much more noticeable in larger brand examples. For example some Canon and Nikon entry level lenses are very poor. But when you’re looking at mid level and pro I think that separation is much reduced. And, of course, by the time the average photography enthusiast has moved on from basic kit lenses they’re starting to be more complete proponents of the craft so that further minimises the gap. So, I guess what I’m saying, in a nutshell is that it’s nothing to do with your eyesight it’s that you’re probably pretty good at what you do, and so you don’t need to spend stupid amounts of money on glass that’s only marginally better and is designed to flatter the “professionals“ 😊👍🏻

      Hi Roger, many thanks for watching and being good enough to get in touch. I hear very similar feedback from so many people about enjoying having lighter gear and probably taking more pictures as a result of it and enjoying photography so much more. You make a good point about the flapping straps from my pouch, although it's fair to say that with a very long lens out at the far end of the focal range it was always going to be the lens it self which creates far more vibration than those little bits of webbing in these circumstances. If I was having a problem with it when shooting at a much shorter focal length and needing to have a slower shutter speed, you're quite right, the pouch would come straight off! 😊👍

The main problem I had at first was that it is so light compared to my usual 40-150 Pro lens that I was getting slightly blurred shots as wasn't holding it still enough. Once got that sorted it is definitely a sharp performer and light enough to talk on any walk. In my case it will be used mainly for birding with the extra reach it offers, but any distant landscapes will be now easily captured.

    I found this video particularly interesting because I purchased a Panasonic Lumix 100-300 II (4.5/5.6) right before the shut down. As you noted, I have found occasions for those line of sight opportunities when the 100mm just isn't enough. The use of super-telephotos in landscape is really under-rated, the compression provides excellent results. I've been very pleased with the images I've captured with it so far. It's not in my bag all the time, but when it is, the weight addition isn't bothersome. Plus, when the light is right, the lens allows me to capture some nice wildlife. Thanks for the great video - stay safe and well David.

      @DGriffGallery  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Miguel, yes you're quite right and it seems odd that there are so few videos where long lens landscapes are featured. And I mean longer than 200 mm because so many people have full frames 70 to 200s. So I'm really hopeful I'll be able to show that picking off images at long range, particularly in the mountains when other peaks are catching the light here and there, can be very rewarding. 😊👍

    It's a good thing I'm not a betting man David, or I'd have lost my money. When you teased us with the new lens a few weeks back, I was pretty certain that is would be the Panasonic Leica 8-18mm. Maybe because I was shopping for that lens myself to compliment my 12-100/4. Your explanation about shooting in the mountains makes sense though.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes, James, that actually wouldn't have been a bad suggestion at all. Since my widest lens goes down to 12mm I have been thinking about options for an ultrawide, But I don't think I would want to add much more weight to my bag so it would be unlikely to be a zoom even if only a short range. Also, I would want it to double as an astro lens. So I have it in mind to acquire a Laowa 7.5mm f/2.0 prime. It's rectilinear (I hate fisheyes!), gets good reviews, is extremely light and even though it's entirely manual that's no problem to me at all. It's not often I use anything wider than my 12mm for landscapes, but every now and then I would like that extra width, and I'd be quite happy to carry an extra 150 g in my bag for those instances 😊👍

As it happens, Caernarfon castle is one of a ring of castles around this part of the North Wales coast established by Edward I after he completed his conquest of the Welsh principalities in 1283. So this castle building is actually a little later than the answer given by Nick. He's quite right, that there is evidence of castles existing in this location following the Norman conquest of the late C11th, but this particular building. including the fortified town walls, was completed in the early 1300s.

Notwithstanding that, it's quite possible that JIP will turn them around in a similar way they did with Sony's Vaio laptops. It's not uncommon for brands to change hands and remain viable, or even move on to be much more successful. Lamborghini haven't done too badly under Audi's ownership. But from a purely personal angle I'm quite happy with my Olympus equipment which I'm sure will serve me pretty well for many years to come. • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Issac, I'm probably not the best person to answer this as I don't do much in the way of wildlife photography. However, I'd be willing to bet that many would suggest the 40-150mm f2/8 Pro, coupled with either an MC-14 or MC-20 teleconverter. But that's only if it's absolutely has to be a zoom lens. Most wildlife photographers that I know of using Olympus equipment swear by the prime 300mm f4/0. This gives you an effective full frame focal length of 600mm, and, working in conjunction with the IBIS, you have 6 stops of stabilisation, which I would expect to be extremely useful for long-range wildlife. Anyway, hopefully you'll be able to get more input from other photographers who specialise in this sort of thing more so than I do, but I hope this is helpful. 😊👍

Far as the post processing, well to be honest, it took a little "creative flair" to get to the point where I was willing to share the image! Hi Dave. Curious to know if you still own this lens. After watching this vlog, I was considering it as a long tele zoom but having second thoughts. You've got some spectacular long sight lines in your neighbourhood but here in central Canada, not as much so I'm not sure if I could make good use of the long end of this lens. More consideration needed, I think.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrew, I used it for about 18 months after I made this, but since moved up to a 40-150 f/2.8 Pro with a 2x teleconvertor. I wanted the bigger aperture for wildlife and couldn't see the point of keeping the old lens. It made some very good images though, but there were specific use-cases where I would be shooting one peak from another. Or very long shots of moon and sun rising / setting. All use cases were replaced by the new lens. If you would rarely shoot out to 2-300mm for landscapes then you'd probably be better off saving your money, and it's not really any use for wildlife as it's just not fast enough 😊👍

      @@DGriffGallery Thanks for the swift reply. I'm leaning more towards the 40-150 F4 Pro. Hi Roger, yes I do, but usually find that my 14-150 is a long enough focal length for lightweight mountain trips. Have you considered the new 40-150 f/4 Pro? It's quite a bit lighter than the older f/2.8 😊👍

      @@DGriffGallery Hi Dave - many thanks for the update. A swap of my 40-150 f2.8 for the new 40-150 f4 is one option I am looking at (but can't use my teleconverter with it for my occasional RSPB reserve trips). I have the 12-100 Pro and that is my workhorse lens and a 100-200 f4 Pro would be a great addition if OMDS could be persuaded to make one. Panasonic Leica do a 50-200 which has good reviews, but Wex advise me that some functions on my EM1mkIII won't work with this lens (e.g. ProCapture). Please keep up your very informative Videos - a great mixture of technical and compositional advice in great surroundings from a user rather than a paid OMDS Ambassador. Hope to be back on Anglesey in the Spring.

    How does the lens fare when you rely solely on the in camera sensor based stabilzation? I shoot on APS-c with the canon 55-250 mm F4 to 5.6 which brings me to 400 mm and rely on the optical stabilization hand held which would be satisfactory for the type of pictures you are taking here... This olympus lens goes to 600 mm FF equivalent which I find amazing given the size and weight. Can you handhold it without the in lens optical stabilization?

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Steven, well even though the lens doesn't have any built-in stabilisation the camera has about five stops of IBIS. So it's still pretty effective. That said, being a landscape photographer the camera is usually on a tripod and so a slow shutter speed is rarely a problem. 😊👍

    Great work by the way ...Lovely images. also wondered if you'd looked at the 100 - 400 mm f5 to 6.3 yet ?

      Hello Rob, many thanks for watching and taking the time to make contact. I have done one or two Lightroom videos back in the day, but recent excursions into post-processing have been in the context of showing how I worked with specific images from location shoots rather than just a processing video. So as they're not badged as processing videos I've added them to a playlist. They're not all Lightroom, some Photoshop too. But only Adobe as I've use their stuff professionally knocking for 20 years now so I'm pretty locked in to the way they do things. Here's a link for the playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLfe39-y3L0ohKmMwpDG2Qmw9iobDH0pvQ.html. As for the 100-400 I haven't got my hands on that one yet, although I'm not really in the market for that sort of colossal lens as I spend a lot of time up mountains and I travel light! 😊👍

      Hi Hagen, if I assume you're using the same body as me, EM1mk2 (or EM5mk3 which is the same sensor / processor) click the Menu button, go to Custom Menu > D1 > Info Settings > Info > Set the checkbox for "Highlight & Shadow". Another good tip is to always have the Histogram visible and ensure that the far right pixels are not piled up against the right hand side of the graph. Hope these are helpful 😊👍

      I suppose I have a touch of sadness about it, but it's also fair to say that they have largely brought it upon themselves. And I am certainly not even thinking about switching brands at all, I never give any thought whatsoever to camera equipment and what's available in the marketplace. 😊👍

    That lens looks mighty good, really impressive stuff. Do you know if that lens would fit in a Canon 6dmk2 David?

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks a lot for watching and being good enough to get in touch. I'm afraid it wouldn't fit anything other than MFT because it has a much smaller form factor so it isn't even feasible with an adapter because it wouldn't provide enough coverage for larger sensors 😊👍

  • @xmeda

    75-300 is not bad, yet it is longer in bag and almost as thick as my APS-C Pentax HD-DA55-300/4.5-6.3WR
    When I attach that Pentax lens on my EM5III via adaptor, I see no image quality advantage in that Oly lens with more elements. Contrast is even weaker.
    Not saying it is bad lens, I'am just surprised with the size when compared to faster lens with larger reach starting at 55mm and being for larger sensor and also including weather sealing which this Oly lens does not have.
    Also the fact that it is being supplied without lens hood is disgusting.
    But paired with EM5III it does the job well and it was not expensive on 2nd hand market.

      Olympus lens hood is only 15. USD. And the auto focus is nice to have when walking around in Japan taking candid street shots which are kind of frowned upon by Japanese folks. I have many lenses that I adapt to my EM5III. And while they are kind of fun occasionally, I just stick with the native glass. 💁🏻‍♀️💕

    Is it right Olympus has made a decision to quit cameras

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, yes they have announced that they are selling their camera division to a company called JIP who specialise in restructuring and selling on struggling corporate divisions. An example of the sort of thing they do is Sony VAIO laptops, which they rescued some years ago quite successfully. Olympus have decided to concentrate on their medical instruments division which is where they are able to make consistent profits, something they have struggled with in photographic equipment over the last few years. 😊👍

      Hi Owen, whilst it's obviously a very sad day when an organisation with such long heritage falls on difficult times, the company which is acquiring the camera division has had some notable successes in turning round failing ventures and selling them on. One example being Sony VAIO laptops. So it's quite possible there still will be Olympus equipment available in future, possibly rebranded but still using the Olympus DNA. So perhaps all is not lost. That said, from a personal perspective it will have no impact on my photography as I am fully equipped and not even close to considering options for some years to come 😊👍
