    Love the pair of ducks. 4:20 The male birds have the colors and the females are more subdued.
    My dad taught me this when I was a little kid, and always liked “birding” since that day. I love seeing them swim as a family with the female in the front, then the chicks, and the male bringing up the rear. 💁🏻‍♀️

    Hi, Rob. Even though im late to the M43 bandwagon, but because of your reviews of this 75-100 Olympus, especially your other video where you compared this to 300mm f4 Pro., i finally scored a very excellent Em1x body to go with the 75 300. Hopefully the Em1x is good enough for me to upgrade from a Nikon 1 v2 as my current birding setup. Thanks for sharing!

    After having jump ship from Canon to Olympus, i find the ultra light m.zuiko 75-300 ii an absolute joy to use. I was using Tamron 150-600 G2 and Sigma 120-300 2.8 DG OS with my 6dm2. The size and weight difference is so welcome and what i enjoy the most is I don't attract unwanted attention while shooting outdoors in local parks. Hand holding shooting is an absolute joy. My back and arms are thanking me for sure 😊. Now looking forward to upgrading to Oly 150-400 lens, but i will still keep this gem. For the price quality perspective, it's a steal.

      I had the Tamron 150-600 for my Nikon. Hardly used it because it was so big. It really is nice to carry something small that does virtually the same thing.

    Insightful video. I got this lens (a used one via eBay) a few weeks ago and I'm very pleased with it. I had disqualified it for a long time as being 'not good enough' but discovered that it's surprisingly sharp in favourable light conditions. It's excellent value for money and remarkably compact for a 600mm equivalent reach. Despite being optically inferior to my PanaLeica 50-200, it resolves more centre detail at 300mm than the PanaLeica 50-200 at 200mm, so it's a good choice for birding when corner sharpness is less important.

    Thanks Rob I have this lens but was never really impressed, I'll have to use it some more soon. I have the 40-150 pro and 1.4tc, but for a little more reach, hmmm.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In good light it does a great job. That said, I'd think the 40-150 with 1.4 would fair better, even if you have to crop to match 300mm.

    I have the EM5iii and the 75-300mm and haven't yet been tempted by any upgrade to the heavier pro lenses. This has little to do with money and I'm not going to say it will give results to match an FF rig with one of the big 600mm F4 type lenses. That is a moot point, as I have no interest in packing that much weight around. What I find liberating is having super-tele reach in a rig, coupled with one of the f1.8 primes, clocks in around 1.2kg and fits neatly in a shoulder bag. It isn't good in low light, but as a tool to use outdoors in the summer I wouldn't swap it for anything on the market today. It will be interesting to see what OMDS drop by way of the rumoured 50-250mm, if its not too big and heavy and has weather sealing, I might be tempted.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm curious about the 50-250mm as well. If its only a little larger than the current 40-150mm f/4, then I might pick it up.

    I have the same combo. If you don't like to carry too much weight this combo is well worth your money in terms and reach and portability. The focus is fast but tracking is a bit of a hit or miss affair. A slow fps like 4-5 fps and just fire away work best for me. The IBIS is great, I can just use my legs instead of a tripod. The only downsides for me are that the lens is not weather sealed and there is no way to add a TC.

    Great video. I got the same email from OMDS. It's a great budget birding/wildlife rig. The secret is setting up the camera properly and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the 75-300mm. Also, practice a lot and you will bet better and better results. I have the E-M1 Mk 3 and I am thinking of getting the 75-300mm. I wish Olympus/OMS would give my camera a firmware upgrade that includes bird tracking.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still have a lot of practice to do. I doubt bird detect will ever come to the EM1.3. Primarily I don't think it has the processing power or hardware and secondarily it would take sales away from the OM-1.

  • @robinschaeffer6252
    @robinschaeffer6252 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My budget birding outfit is an OM-D em5 (mark1) and a Tamron 70-300mm combo bought used for under $200USD. It's a manual focus set-up so it keeps you on your toes. With practice and a little bit of luck you can get some nice photos, and no worries about dropping it in the marsh.
    P.S. The eagles and other water birds are at Conowingo dam this time of year (April) which is not too far from you.

    • @RobTrek

      Hi Rob,
      Actually it isn't an exceptional deal. You can often buy used em-5s on eBay for less than $150 and Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 lenses (mod 572D (Blk) or 772D (Silver) for under $50. The adapter is another $17. For someone who wants to do casual bird photography and doesn't mind manual focus it's a pretty low bar for entry.
      5 miles below the Conowingo dam on the Cecil county side is an old river town, Port Deposit, that has some interesting architecture.

    Really nice video Rob. I switched systems from Canon to Olympus right after the first EM-1 came out. I made the switch because of size and weight. I also have some physical disabilities that prompted me to make the switch. I currently have an EM-1 MKIII With the 12-100mm f/4 pro lens as my primary camera. I should mention that I am not a pro photographer. I take photos purely for my own enjoyment. I have found that even though I really like my EM-1, I find myself grabbing my EM-5 MKIII with the 14-150mm lens much more frequently. It’s just such a pleasure to use. I also have the 9-18mm and 75-300mm lenses. I am seriously thinking of make the EM-5 with those three lenses my primary system. I have yet to come into a situation that this little light weight camera and lenses couldn’t handle. I’m seriously considering possibly selling my EM-1 and replacing it with an OM-5 because of the size difference. I believe that the 75-300mm lens is highly underrated. I know it’s not as good as the pro lenses, but given the price, size and weight difference it’s definitely worth considering. I wish that both the 9-18 and the 75-300 had some weather sealing like the 14-150 does. I think that would make the perfect kit for light weight relatively inexpensive outdoor photography.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would recommend the same settings for the E-M5ii. As you may know, the E-M5ii has a contrast only AF system. So when using C-AF, the images may look out of focus in the evf while you are shooting. However, I found it actually does acquire focus. Granted, many shots will be out of focus too. So for birds on a stick, I prefer using S-AF and for birds in flight C-AF. Just make sure you have S-AF and C-AF release priority set too "OFF".

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I don't know if there is any other difference than cosmetic. I've heard the mark 2 is better but I can't confirm that.

    @Rob My combo is the Pen-F and the 75-300mm II. I have a lot of fun birding and am amazed at what this supposedly slow camera allows me to do. I would be interested what your impression of how much better the em5.3 is compared to the Pen-F for birding.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The key difference for birding is ProCapture on the E-M5.3. The phase detect AF helps for faster moving subjects as well. The E-M5.3 also attains focus faster in lower light, particularly helpful when using slow lenses like the 75-300mm. It also has a faster fps, up to 30fps in silent mode. All that said, birding is about 90% skill. ProCapture is really about the only thing that will make getting difficult shots easy. Such as capturing a bird flying off a branch.

      @@RobTrek Thanks for your assessment. I will be optimizing the 90% then before I throw more money at the problem.

    Great commentary on the lens. I have been debating about buying the !00-400 for a trip to Scotland. Still debating on the kit to carry. I have the new OM-1 with the 12-40 , also the OMD EM1 MARK 2, AND the 7-14, and the 12-100. and the EM1X. probably not buy the 100-400 and just carry the 75-300 II. does anyone else have recommendations for a trip to Scotland and Denmark in June ?!

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I would take the om-1 with 12-40 and 75-300mm. Long term you might want to consider the 100-400 instead, particularly if you want to do wildlife more. If you travel more than you do wildlife, the 75-300mm will be fine.

    • @PGXX8
      @PGXX8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree with Rob but would take the 12-100 instead of the 12-40. Saves you from switching lenses in bad weather.
      I‘d take the 7-14 as well for landscape. Or get the Laowa 7,5 if you want to save on weight.

    Great video Rob. What were the adjustments you had to make to get better shots?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I remember correctly, I had the group focus points set to 5x5. I changed it to 3x3. I also had C-AF+M but changed it to C-AF because I kept turning the manual AF ring on the lens. I assigned lever position 2 for small single point S-AF+M. With a bunch of other settings, I saved that to C1. When in Aperture priority mode, I changed the focus points to "All" which worked better for birds high in the sky. Although I'm still not confident that is the way to go. I need to go out a few more times and work out what is best.

      @@RobTrek Thanks! I keep changing the settings after every trip because always something comes up😅 that make me change my mind. One thing I will try next time is switching to panning stabilization instead of auto, to see if I get sharper shots.

      I've used the 100-400 and can tell you it's sharper and the in-lens stabilization helps. I almost got it over the 300mm f4 but decided the wider aperture in the f4 was worth it.

      @@RobTrek It's probably the sharpest zoom lens I have. Compared to the 12-200, even if birds take up the same space within the frame, its quite a bit sharper. But I image the 75-300 would also be sharper than the 12, at least on the long end.
