    I remember the wool head over that was issued to us in the British army back in the 80’s. It was about the same length as the commercial Buff head socks you can purchase now. Every squaddie tried to get at least two. One for your neck and the other you turn into the commando style hat. Best bit of kit I ever nicked when I left.

    Great video Dave. I never would’ve thought of all those things you could do with the scarf. I also wanted to tell you that your haircut looks great on you. God bless you, your family, and your business. John.

    Most places I was stationed we weren't allowed to wear our scarves. But when I was allowed to wear it I loved it, kept me very warm.

    The old ww2 Brit commando unit used the wool scarf on the same way to make their commando hat.
    The Dutch Commando 's still using it during their Commando training..its named de Mutsdas

    Medieval hoods are based on the principle that heat rises. The French version (Chaperon) I am familiar with is basically a medieval hood with a sleeve like much this closed military scarf in the back of the hood part so it could be used in many different configurations, a lot like you show here.

    I’ll be a son of a gun … I’ve been wearing a military wool scarf exactly the same as you show for quite a while now , and that what you showed is brilliant. So thank you ! And say for the past eight years or so I’ve been really pushing this issue with wool clothing. If you can afford it or when you can afford it, you’ll be happy I know I am.

    Great video and tips. As a long time wool wearer, please remember to store your wool items in moth proof bags. Those suckers ruined some nice Icelandic wool items years ago. I learned my lesson the hard way.

    I remember seeing a Dave Holiday video where he was singing the praises of the trappers sash. How when tied around the midsection properly it would act like a shoulder less vest to add insulation. I could see a couple scarfs being used together to become a full vest in a pinch.

    By using the double layer technique, you could slip your feet in there as extra insulation as part of a sleep system.

    Added note about the rear roll tucked toboggan. In addition to the 4 layers on the ears, there's also 4 layers on the back half of the head. This configuration is really 4 layers over the majority of the head.

    some guy wrongly criticized david on another video for advertising things which are for sale. Besides the mountain of free how to content on this channel, videos like this show why you would want the product and how you can use it. He isn't advertising high fashion neck ties, he is giving people options on what to use innawoods. The fact that he includes some information on where the product is available is helpful and saves me time and prevents me from buying some cheap imitation thing. Not the same thing at all of some know-nothing influencer advertising some useless cheap gadget not worth its weight. Are we going to complain about mors kochanski for saying mora knives are good and worth a buy? no. Thanks Dave, this is good stuff.

  • @peterbogart4531
    @peterbogart4531 ปีที่แล้ว

    T Y again, Dave. To keep my face warm in the too often 60 or more below zero of the Yukon winters I would cut a long piece of soft wool from an old shirt about four inches wide and make a long roll about 2 inches wide out of it. I was wearing a very warm sheepskin trooper hat that was proof against any deep cold. I would tie the roll of wool cloth around my head, across the ears, upper cheeks, and nose. It was enough to keep my whole face from frostbite without the need for a mask while hiking and working. I could have used a couple of those versatile military wool tube scarves for when I stopped, though. Very often the greatest need was to avoid generally overheating while keeping particularly vulnerable parts warm.

  • @michaelbaldwin6543
    @michaelbaldwin6543 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree with this concept completely. I prefer to use the a couple of merino wool neck gaiters for my neck and headwear, but I also keep a three yard piece of wool cloth (9' x 3') in my go bag to use as a scarf or small blanket. These pieces have served me well for many years.

    You should make a video detailing your philosophy towards single-use vs. multi-use items, why you choose one vs. the other in certain circumstances, pros and cons for each, item examples, your thought process when evaluating items for use, etc. I believe it's the thing I have the most trouble teaching the guys I work with. Thanks.

    Dang, they're sold out on your site.
    Lucky for me, there's a milsurp store about 5 minutes away, and they had the open end type in stock. Seems smaller than the one in your video, but I was able to turn it into a hat, coif, and full mask just fine, so good call on great kit!
    I have a full beard, so if it's itchy, I'm not noticing, except just a tad around my forehead.
    A buddy gave me a tip that works great with my Pendleton wool blanket to eliminate the itching: wash only in cold water, DO NOT wring it out; let it hang and air dry (I find the shower curtain rod is perfect for this if you sweep the curtain aside). Once dry, it's fluffy, warm, and not itchy. He's big into wool clothes, and learned that trick.

    _which one was the _*_Dr. Who_*_ wear?_ ;^}
    sure seems to me that the sewn end one would become 17x more useful if it had buttoned over pockets, both inside the pocket bottom fold over & uptop entrance with the buttons internal. I know it would cost considerable more.
