Cutting down the caps like you showed is a perfectly good method. Since you mentioned hot tweezers, you can also improvise these with two soldering irons, solves the problem of insufficient heat. Hot air is the professional way but requires a lot of flux and cleaning afterwards, and is still difficult when plastic parts are nearby. I really don't like the quacks who "wiggle" or twist off caps and inevitably damage the board.
The proof of a good process is the most efficient outcome . Efficiency is relative. Rationale: no damage, no stress, same process works across all SMC caps, speed is not the priority. Luv it.
Been cutting SMD caps 🧢 the CE way for years now. I think removing the Audio Connectors to access the caps behind the keyboard connector is the best way. You get a chance to align them better on the board because they were usually installed crooked from the factory any way and as an added bonus you get to reflow them with new solder.
chris your work is brilliant as always. i still have an ANCIENT roll of 'tandy' your radio shack 60/40 as well! i know you loved the puzzle box, but indeed, we have much sights to show you chris. the doctor, is in.
We gotta 2fer this vid. With the modulator removed that would be a good spot for a HDMI connector, when the owner gets to that upgrade that is. I to prefer the clip method of taking off the SMD caps, I tried the tweezer solder method but I can't get them to heat under the cap well enough and worry about over heating the pads. Great work as usual.
Your way of removing caps is the only way. Gotta do this to a few 1990’s non Amiga devices I own, that have now have the capacitor plague. Nice glimpse behind the scenes. I think I still have my old canon dot matrix printer for my A500 stashed in the attic at my parent’s house. Might have to bust it out and use it, with Final writer :)
Leaky caps kill....your PCB lol! When I'm working with an Amiga I don't treat it like I'm working as an electronics tech. These are irreplaceable so I take my time and treat it accordingly.
Another great Video Dr Chris. Nice to see the master at work 😉👍🏻 As for the ATK memory test. I find you need to go past 5. Why? Have had issues with A4K accelerators RAM where up to 4.5 it appears fine, but after I have had errors. 🙄 Cheers. 🍻
Chris are you at VCF East this year? There is a reason to remove the modulator on a C64 or C128, to replace it with a video output board. What is the purpose of pulling it on a Amiga? Yes, it is not needed, but again why pull it?
Its a voltage hog and you can eliminate 4 caps if you do but I always put the, all on In case the owner ever wanted the modulator back on for some oddball reason if tube TVs come back
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Thank you, that makes sense. If it's in the end users thought I dunno. I have about 6 or so Amiga (3 or 4 500's, 600s, and 1200s) in my future projects closet. I will keep that it mind. I agree there will never be a use for it for RF Output, and if it's a current draw, it's good to get rig of it. You're somewhere around Lancaster? I'm in central, PA (Lewistown). I'll be heading to VCF east that Thursday afternoon sometime. I assume you will be doing the same.
i should be there if life permits. yes im in south central area but the show is fri-sun i will leave friday morning and stay for the day, one is enough for me.
This man. Appreciated. Appreciate him.
Love you are using the DM printer! Another day of saving Amigas!

Great job you did Chris. Nice to see you work on these boards. Thankx for sharing. Greetings from Steven from the Netherlands

Fun times. I get to do this today on air. Keep it up my friend.

Nice!
Chris sorry, what do you do when you do come across the 'concrete'. The other methods you talk about?
I use the finger drills that I shared in my video that is my main method for getting through those tough things
love the tune chris did you compose that yourself??
Yes i make all my own music in GarageBand on the mac. Mona is from a special video we made years back

why can't americans say the word SOLDER properly... it's SOLDER! not SODDER
inflection in every aspect of speech.
