    Benny is a retired Standardbred who has some amazing owners that are looking to give Benny a new life after racing. I've been privileged with the job of helping Benny go from a pacing race horse to a relaxed trail and arena horse. This is part three of a three part series posted to show his owners how he's coming along. These kinds of videos come with all training of horses here at Stable Horse Training.
    This video is about Benny going on his first and second trail ride after taking a couple of walks by hand the first two days. For a horse that has only been ridden for a month now and never been out on trails, he does extremely well. Benny is a very smart horse that I expect will turn out to be an amazing trail and riding horse.

    Oh I love this one. Reminds me of when I used to be able to ride (I've now had 3 hip replacements...can't ride horses anymore...ever...breaks my heart. Maybe why I love your videos so much!).
    We have a wonderful National Forest close to me (Bankhead National Forest, AL), we used to go on long weekend camping/trail rides, so gorgeous and amazingly fun. I had a 5 year old Thoroughbred I used to ride on the trails. She retired from racing because she was too friendly with stall mates and would make friends and then not want to pass them on the track...not good for a race horse. But, she made an excellent trail horse and buddy if you just had to get somewhere quickly, holy cow she had a whole other gear! Sad, she went blind at 11 years old and then I was the only one that could ride her and only in the field where she lived and was familiar.

      Wow, that's an interesting story indeed! Thank you for sharing it. I've always wanted to work with a blind horse..

      @@StableHorseTraining Sadly, that was when I was younger and before I did a lot of training, so I did not work with her much. Looking back I wish I had.

    Awesome video - My wife has just purchased a Standardbred & I took him on a trail yesterday & yep - he did the same sorta stuff as Benny ... There SO heavy set the STB hey, I'm not really used to them, it like turning an elephant! :) But awesome horses! fantastic video, really useful info! Thanks again...

      That's great. In time they can get pretty light and responsive. Benny turned out amazing in the end and I really enjoyed riding him. Within the top three of horses I've been on or around. The best thing I like about them I would say is they're steady disposition and quick learning. It was pretty hard to spook these guys, solid horses. Good luck to you and your wife with him! I'm sure you won't look back for one second. Thanks for the compliments! Very much appreciated.

      Thanks man - I'm going to take him into the arena on the weekend & see how he goes! Apparently he collects well, I feel like he's going to be a good pony! :) I'm hearing that a lot that there quick learners & hopefully he'll get a bit softer & responsive... I have to ride the Arabian this afternoon, he's got some punch & he knows it!!! lol Very different to my wife's STB ... Thanks again for your reply, Ive been checking out more of your videos! Really good content!!! :)

      You're welcome, sounds like you have lots to do there! Getting them soft and responsive is just about everything when it comes to working with horses I think. Thanks for the compliments :) Let me know if anything doesn't make sense!

      Thanks again :) Yeah I'll hit you up for sure if I have any questions, there is SO much for me to learn RE: training! I just ride, but I'm getting more & more interested in horsemanship! I want to dive deeper into softer hands & riding with-out a bit & having a more natural approach - Ive got a very strict dressage background, but sorta wanna get away from that! LoL.... Thanks again man & chat soon... Grant...

      My Standardbred, by comparison, is much smaller. She's only 14.2H and maybe 900 pounds.

  • @jstringfellow1961

    I did note that you were not using a bit. I understand some people prefer to ride bitless, I am not one of those people. My 3-piece snaffle is a good choice for my Standardbred, and she is not harmed in any way. She listens to me, she keeps her head but if I need it, I have it. I think it may help when you are trying to plow or drive forward (gently of course). It's been very successful for me.

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You definitely don't need to justify to me that you use a bit. It's the norm in the horse world, so don't worry so much :)

      Bit's are only pain devises. Sorry, but I remember the running of the school horses, they ran through the bit and I saw a lot of nasty injuries. Riding without a bit is the best you can you in my opinion.

    Bear! What do you do with bear and a nervous horse?

  • @jeanclayton565
    @jeanclayton565 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What would you do if you was to see a bear how would you handle that.

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We come across bears a lot. In fact we just had one around about an hour ago. Horses are pretty good about bears and bears tend not to mess with horses. Each situation may demand a different response. If the bear looks like it's doing nothing or just going another direction, then there really isn't anything to do. The last thing I would do though is let a horse run from it. Again, for the most part, bears want nothing to do with horses. They're big. If I were to come across a momma and baby and somehow get in the middle then I'd like make sure I was through as quickly and calmly as I could be.

    Stop letting the horse do what he wants ... get some real horse bits, a whip and spurs if you need it .... ride him and turn him as you please .... if you let a horse make decisions he’s going to do what he wants with other people and that’s dangerous

      You're welcome to continue looking through the videos about Benny to see how he turned out. I didn't find the need to resort to violence to get the job done and his owner is very very happy with him. Thank you for watching and commenting.

      I understand your frustration, but your advice is really unnecessary. Where a bit may be a better choice than taking a green horse down a trail, spurs are rarely if ever a good choice. You are correct that the rider allows Benny too much freedom with his movements, but the rider is not a trainer. He is showing us his experiences with his personal horse. He's not saying "Do this to achieve that." Be kind.

      Hi Jude, Benny isn't mine and I was actually training him. Thanks for asking the guy to be kind, but he's long gone never to come back. I appreciate that though. Thanks for your input on how I train horses, even though you don't actually think I'm training. I would only respectfully disagree with your assessment of what I was doing as I think you're missing the point of the lesson. Benny ended off in great condition where he went from just a track horse to a really solid trail horse that just about anybody could ride out on.
