Thank you Amanda
I have a 14 yr old QH - trained 2 yrs ago She we have been riding,Trotting, loping on trails for past 2 yrs - gone over concrete, small amount of sand, up hills, down hills, bridges etc. Trailered to many trail rides Calmest horse In group- usually will lead through something new
Past weekend- rode with people who fox hunt so frequently trotting or loping. We came down a steep hill - she didn’t rush and did great- it leveled out so we started trotting to go up a hill and was going into a lope-- I thought! Realized.. not in enough time she was full bending in the middle buck. The terrain had changed to deep sand ( I live west Tn - rarely have random deep sand). No warning. I got bucked off -thankfully I landed in the sand! I am in shock. I did get back on and ride back but complete shock. I have ridden this trail- it had low sand and I didn’t run through it I guess. Any words of wisdom ? Maybe I need deeper saddle and bucking rolls 🤷♀️🤷♀️
These kind of experiences help us to become better . Remember what it felt like just before it got bad . There was probably an opportunity to be there for your horse in a supporting way that you likely could have prevented him from bucking before it got started .
@@cappelhorsetrainingandshoeing she showed no signs. Went down hill great ( we have ridden hills .. ). If she gets hesitant at something she seems to look to me. This was a weird event -- and I am sore ! I watched the video/--nothing she was hesitant too .. just hit the deep sand at lope aiming up hill 🤷♀️. I rode her this evening … she isn’t anxious( but I was some). Be careful where you lope ….and mindful.
I too learned they can be funny with sand. My super steady trail and ranch horse stepped into some nice warm sand and was on his knees in a New York second. Shocking! Fortunately I put the legs to him hard and avoided that nice roll he was dreaming of.
Would love to see you riding a TB/OTTB out on the trail.
I have had them in in the past but at the moment I do not have one . Some of them do well out in the open and some of them struggle to have the confidence they need to be good on the trail . I’ll do my best to get some footage of one when I get the opportunity.
Thank you
Dennis
