Thanks Again Kat and Mark, super interesting episode. It reminded me my 'college/University' old times . I major in agricultural engineering in a State University and a few years later I did my MBA in a private University. Capuses here in Mexico are similar in many ways, smaller in proportion and with the big difference, most of them do not have dorms. All students have to live (to sleep) out of campus, although most of the time you may spend it in campus on classes, seminars, doing homework, group activities, practicing sports, gym, social events, etc. Thanks aagain for the great episode!
Thanks for sharing your experience - so interesting! It's also true in the UK that "halls / dorms" are not on the campus exactly, but they are very very close by, so students can walk or take a bus to the campus.
Good question! [A class] is usually at a school. There can be 5 to maybe 35 students in 1 class. [A lecture] is usually at university / college. There can be 100+ students. Because there are so many students, the lecturer rarely asks questions or does activities with the students, so they just talk and share a presentation. "A lecture" literally means a long talk. The 'audience' is not always expected to do much except listen and take notes. I hope that makes sense!
Good morning. I love studying foreign languages, also to communicate with exchange students that arrive here and who spend a semester or a whole school year in my city. I am an AFS/Intercultura volunteer , it's really excited! Thanks a lot for your lessons!
That’s amazing! We also have a friend who hosts exchange students, what a wonderful way to help students settle in to going to school in a new place! Thanks for sharing with us
Thanks Kat and Mark, Im enjoying this classs so much! Is there any distinction when it is said that the group discussions are 'amongst' students, than when it's said 'among' students? Blessings.
In short, you can use both! The students are discussing amongst themselves. The students are discussing among themselves. talking amongt/st themselves having a discussion among/st themselves discussing among/st themselves both among and amongst are commonly used here, although you will hear "amongst" used in more formal situations, it's commonly heard in spoken English thanks for your question and joining us today!
haha, there's lots and lots of slang in college, but talking about it as adults, sometimes we've forgotten all the fun things we used to say, thanks so much for joining us today!
Great english channel i found, ok please do the video about work or meeting conversation like how would you talk at meeting. Just give your real sentences that's enough. There is no other channel can give real sentences.
I graduated from English language and literature about 13 years ago. Here Bachelors is supposed to be 4 years, at least for my faculty. It was divided in semesters as well. it was actually a nightmare, I really regret going to that University, the lecturers were not top - notch as I realize now as well, and generally a lot of things ,like being demotivated because of their discouragement or just that I was not ready for competition. I think I just payed them money to destroy my mental health and give me life-long block in English😒 but yes, maybe everything is just life experience and we have to learn from them.
Ahhhh I remember having some of the worst college professors during the most important education in life!! I definitely had a few good professors but overall I was just trying to finish my degree the fastest way possible. I still have nightmares about not graduating from college and missing classes. 😂🤭😭😭
@highlevellistening one scene is how one of my lecturers was looking at me with scrutiny and disbelief, when I was trying to retell the lesson:😁🧐 then,I was forgetting everything 🥲:) sadly, those mistakes led to real struggles then, when you actually realize do not have enough knowledge to work and so on. Well, of course, I can not blame only others for this. Ok, thank you!
Hi. You talked during this episode about credits, what are they? And how does anyone get them? And do they help get through the final exams? Would you please talk more about them ( credits)? Thank you so much.
Hi there! Credits or credit hours are the points you get for passing a class. Most classes are worth 3 credits, and you need about 120 credits to earn a bachelor’s degree. Think of it like this: a 3-credit class meets for 3 hours per week, and you get 3 credits if you pass. If you fail, you get zero credits. In one semester, most students take 12 to 15 credits, which means 4 to 5 classes and about 12 to 15 hours in class each week. That’s a pretty full schedule! Hopefully that helps! Thanks for studying with us today!
In the States we usually have the basic two spring and fall semesters but sometimes people call summer and winter classes summer and winter semester. It’s just a section of time of the year when you take your classes. Hope that helps!
I am second year in universty but this is my last year. My department is Computer Programming for 2 years (I'm not sure, is there a specific word for that). Computer engineering is 4 years department. I will take an exam to complete 4 years for bachelor's certificate.
Hi good morning! In the US, we have 2-year programs that we would call an associate's degree or associate's program in computer programming, but of course it might be called a 2 year diploma or 2 year program in Computer programming depending on where you live. 2 years for an associate's degree, 4 years for a bachelor's degree so I would say "I'm in the 2-year program for computer programming and then I will take an exam to begin the 4-year program to get my bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering." Let me know if that's correct for your program, we can change it up a little. Thanks for joining us!
In the US, when I was in high school, there was a lot of pressure to go to a good college and get a degree. We have 4 year schools and 2 year schools called junior colleges where you can get certificates or finish 2 year programs called associate degrees. Often in junior colleges you can learn a trade or a profession and we call these tech colleges, trade colleges or trade programs, hope this is the answer you were looking for!
Thanks, Kat &Mark ❤

Thanks Kat and Mark. Can you explain the difference between class and lecture?
Good question!

Thanks for the suggestion! We haven't done a work video in a while, we'll try to put that together for you in a few weeks!

Thank you for the video! I am a little confused, isn’t a semester half a year ? 🤔

Do all the guys go to college? Do your have professional schools?
