When people ask me why an East Londoner like myself supports Liverpool, my answer is always John Barnes.

I used to love Barnes. Then he turned into a crybaby race warrior.
As a black man that loved Rush it filled me with so much joy watching this Great man running from the half way line or deep in his own half to score. One of the greatest Liverpool players ever!

Barnes played a different position and arguably shone and drove us forward when we were beginning to decline. I’ll never forget that season when he was put in midfield with Michael Thomas, a young Robbie Fowler upfront and we just missed out on the league title. Michael Thomas and Barnes were formidable in the middle. Yep the same Thomas that killed us in 89. Incidentally I’m from Highbury N5 live two minutes from the Arsenal! Yep my hearts in Liverpool.

As someone who was born on the other side of the 'iron curtain' in communist Poland, I'd fallen in love with John's football when he played for England and than it natrually transformed into love for LFC that lasts 'till now.

Digger was one of the finest players I ever saw to grace the hallowed red shirt on the pitch.
Totally mesmerising to watch him perform such magic.
Lord King Baron Barnes and Beardsley combined with the 1987-88 midfield and defence. Aldo and Ray Houghton. I turned 15 in May 1988 and that was the best LFC team I saw in the flesh. I didn't start going the match all the time until the 1984-85 season when we got banned from Europe. I'd just turned 12 at the time of Belgium and never went abroad.
Johnny Barnes went that way and five defenders went that way. Mark Walters stepped in under Souness when Barnesy had that bad Achilles injury. That didn't help Souness but Walters did his part when he come in. Impossible task to replace late eighties early nineties Barnesy before the bad injury

For all the pleasures over the years watching the likes of Gerrard, Torres, Salah, Rushie etc etc. No one gave me as much excitement in a Liverpool shirt as watching John Barnes. That peak John Barnes between 87-90 was incredible. Every week, every game he seemed to do something memorable, went past players with such ease, wonderful memories. An incredible natural talent and an intelligent, humble man. My first and remains my only true football hero.

@@reluctantsocialist2670 Despite what he says I don't believe Barnsey wants to be remembered as just one member of the team, no more celebrated than the others. I'm sure he enjoys being thought of as the most skillful and the most thrilling to watch. I do believe he thinks all of his team mates were great and did their important jobs well. I just don't believe he just wants to be remembered with no more fondness and no more awe and be no more celebrated than, say, Steve Staunton (his example).
One of the best moments of my life was seeing him in restaurant in Liverpool when I was a 9 year old , visiting from Ireland on my birthday present from my mom , couldn’t get tickets to the match but saw my idol near our hotel , I told my wife and friends in a dinner party in New York recently what was one of the best moments in your childhood, I saw seeing John Barnes at a restaurant, that’s how much I loved him as a kid !!
I'd love a podcast with Barnesy and Jürgen, just the two of them talking LFC history and how the game and everything around it changed. John could tell him so much about old LFC, the greats and the struggles the city of Liverpool went through aswell. Having a beer ofc :)

John Barnes was without doubt one of the greatest English players ever ( who else can´t forget that goal against Brazil in the Maracana!) but his humility and over-riding belief that no-one is bigger than the team is what shines through. Amazing free spirit on and off the pitch ... would like to see a podcast with him and Roy Keane.

I really enjoyed this when I watched on LFCtv. Something that stood out for me was when he talked about being “a Liverpool player”. He’s right. There are some brilliant players who, if they played for us, would never be a “Liverpool player”. I think Christiano is a football genius, but would never be a Liverpool player. Messi would because it’s a mindset. You can be a football genius and still play for the team. Christiano plays for one person. Himself. Salah is a genius who recognises his abilities, but he plays for the team. So did Sadio. I don’t think Mbappe would fit in here either for the same reason. It’s in our DNA as LFC.

This guy was the real deal. John Barnes in his pomp was unplayable. He was a Superstar.
The first football team that I ever supported was Liverpool, and it was partly because my favourite colour is red and they seemed to win all of the time. I was only about 6. And my favourite player was John Barnes. It was mainly because of his smile and body language, and the way he moved around the pitch. I knew he was a cool guy when I was 6 years old. Children are psychic for sure
And the combination of Jamaican and scouse accent is amazing ; )
It was also a great combination Barnes and Aldridge together.
The only game made me sad and shocked was the final game at Anfield in 1989 when Liverpool lost the Championship to
Arsenal by ONE goal.
Nowadays Var would have disallowed that goal of Alan Smith 😊
What people don't talk about is the number of games Liverpool played that final week. First came the cup final, two hours in blazing heat on the energy sapping Wembley pitch and the emotion of winning it, next came West Ham on the Tuesday. West Ham were fighting for their lives and set off like an express train, but we ran out five to one winners. Finally, came the titanic clash with Arsenal on the Friday. Why Friday, just a little over two days after west Ham? The players were mentally and phisically shattered, it's not taking anything away from Arsenal, they won the title over the whole season, not juts that game, but the players had nothing left to give.
During otherwise devastating childhood and teen years, Liverpool FC was my brigth light and source of happiness, and John Barnes was one of the most vital parts of that club and the team at the time. When Liverpool won, everything was fine for a while, I felt happy and powerful, and as long as we had player like Dalglish and Barnes and McMahon (player like whom I would´ve wished to be as a player) and all the rest, there was going to be a lot of wins. What little stability and "safety" I had in life was produced by those lads.

in 1990 we only had one football programme at sunday with 50 minutes football from germany,italy or england.

John Barnes will always make an ALL TIME Liverpool eleven in my book. Best Player in the best Liverpool side I have ever seen. The European ban prevents people from realising how good that side was. I truly believe that only the great Arigo Sacci Milan side with the likes of Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Ancelotti, Gullit, Rijkaard & van Basten were on a par with the Dalglish side of 87,88 & 89.

One of the biggest influences of my footballing life. A rocket of a left foot with the finesse and grace to glide across the pitch.
Watched this for the first time. I have many memories of seeing both guys do amazing things. I will share some of them.
So, I first saw Barnes play for England in 1990, during this time I lived close to Wembley in Harrow and went to the 1990 World cup warm up games. Saw Barnes score a brilliant swivel half volley against Uruguay in the red kit (which I always preferred to the white). Then I saw Liverpool a couple of times before Kenny left suddenly in early 1991. So I managed to see them live before the team started to break up under Graeme Souness. I was at Wembley in 1993, close up right behind the goal for Barnes' free kick. That was bizarre! The match started and Barnes was getting booed every touch. Then he scores the free kick within three minutes, and then some are cheering and the ones who were booing didn't know what to do!! I went on to see Liverpool numerous times between 1990 and 2000. home and away. The best match being the second 4:3 against Newcastle in March 1997. I was also there when Blackburn won the league in 1995.
I saw Fowler score four goals in one match against Bolton. And the best goal I saw him score was the flick and turn against Steve Staunton and then smashing it in from 30 yards past Bosnich of Aston Villa. That is one of the best goals I have ever seen.
I saw Liverpool win against Arsenal at Highbury, hammer Tottenham at White Hart Lane, and watched Whelan and Molby play all over Queens park Rangers at Loftus road.
I am pleased Barnes mentioned Ronnie Whelan, I have said often he was one of my favourite players along with Barnes and Houghton, immaculate first touch, a real brain, and tough.
Yes we know Souness tried to change things too quick and got rid of too many players too quickly. And Roy Evans was not stern enough with the young players. Plus strategically and emotionally Roy Evans was not good enough. I have said on record many times, Michael Thomas complimented John Barnes so much better than Jamie Rednapp and should have played every match. Thomas was closer to Ronnie Whelan in terms of intelligence on how to play central midfield with more athleticism which was needed to aid Barnes. But Evans had 1989 in his mind and did not use Thomas properly. When Thomas played Liverpool were much better and he should have started the 1996 FA Cup final against Manchester Utd.
So when I think about Liverpool from 1994 to 1998, it was a lost opportunity, so many talented footballers but just couldn't get over the line, maybe the will to win was not quite there under Roy Evans.
And then under Houllier, the football for me was not as interesting. 2001 was good though!!
One issue I have with Houllier and Benitez is the football they played was a bit old fashioned. Take the Brazil team of 1982 and the French team of the mid 1980s. On paper both Brazil and France are 4:4:2 but the players are expressing themselves within that framework, the left back will pop up in central midfield and create or score a goal. Under Dalglish Liverpool were doing exactly the same thing, which made the football breath taking.
But under Houllier and Benitez, the players had to stick to what the manager wanted or else. Therefore those two managers could never bring in real quality players because players like that will have their own opinions about how to play. Houllier brought in Jari Limanen and Marcus Babel then wouldn't use them. Houllier and Benitez were control freaks. So the football suffered, even if both managers had some success.
Just think of it, Benitez tries to get rid of Xavi Alonso to bring in Gareth Barry. That sums Liverpool up during that era of the 2000s.
