If my memory is right, there was nothing else like it around at the time, certainly not mainstream. He was the figurehead for the early 2000's "chav" youth culture way before the mainstream even knew what a chav was. His music was relatable to any teenage lad from the council estates or suburbs who liked to blaze or get laggin. That album, a grand dont come for free, was like an hour long story...really original idea. He didnt try and be anything he wasnt, i always respect that in any artist. I remember him headlining with lilly allen at glastonbury wishing i was there. Top lad and i'd like to see more of him.
Get to a live show mate. They're fucking great. First english accent I heard rapping on a mainstream song - other garage artists had american accents. It's a shame he's been labelled with the chav moniker throughout his career...tough to shake off.
I love Birmingham! I grew up here for almost 8 years. Came from Poland when I was a kid, and now I'm almost an adult. I enbrace the culture, I've been hanging out with the blacks and Asian bros Mainly. They treated me like one of their own. This is the beauty of my city. Birmingham is my city! We all live through struggle here. We are all a minority in a way, and yet we are amazing and special just the way we are. Way more unified and respectful towards each other than London.
I'm from NYC and I'm a big fan of The Streets. That's how I was introduced to Mike Skinner the artist. As a frenchman it feels like the "story" of the rising of the Bermingham HipHop scene it's quite similar to the Marseille one in the late 90's, a big multicultural city with people with a strong accent in it, its own vibe and proper identity, but they manage to create their own sound and reach bigger audience, and when you listen to it you know where it's from totally different from what Parisien people produce
Very different. The things IAM and 3eme oueil etc have done is legendary. Hiphop in France was very new. Marseille was truly a ghetto in certain places. Also the Marseille accent is beautiful. JayoGotBeats NO, you clearly didnt understand my original point, which was that you guys being Relatively new to hip hop on the general timeline of its origin, couldnt be 'helping to take hip hop global" as proclaimed in the original comment. It was global before anyone in this video or the "early 2000s" made any impact. American rappers from the 80s and forward were already doing international shows. So how could anyone later on be helping to do something that had already been done? That was my point. Like i said before, yall new to this shit. @@DO-mw6ju no , because the USA is what all areas tried go copy in 80s and 90s, people should be rapping about there own ends, like the Yanks do. Back in day you had English rappers talking American and making videos with American back ground , not real. All about accents no matter where you from

If not for him, especially the masterpiece that was/is Original Pirate Material, I never would have learned about all the amazing hip hop from the UK, back then and up to now and I'm so glad I discovered it all those years ago. I love this video. This is me. This is my music, This is my life. This is my home town. Watch out for me too yo!!! Can you believe I started off with Mike Skinner in his bedroom in West Heath... ?
Now let's get this straight, iam not exactly a young man anymore, however i was born and raised in Brum and miss her so bad at times. Still keep a finger on what's up..so from this old Brummie my kids downloaded, in support of these young musicians, some of their tunes, so y'all now on the Texas/ Mexican border and they love it. God Bless youngsters, and Mike ya still wrinkle free for a timer like me, all the best, continued success.
WOW - Kingshurst Yoof Club!! I used to trip in there on a Thursday night 6 - 9pm - then walk back to Chelmsley Wood with 3/4 dudes tripping ballz!! Sneaking back into Mums house at 6am when she got up to go work!! 1990's acid days!
Props to Mike Skinner for doing this... He's got some of these people on his new album, too. I remember when Original Pirate Material came out and he got some hate from the Birmingham scene he left behind. In many ways, he opened a lot of doors though.... I remember saying to some of those people on line to take it by the horns, then. It took some time.
Chris1998 I hear what you're saying bro but even listen to what the people are saying in the documentary "it changed in the blink of an eye". When I talk to my mates in Manchester/London before they've never acknowledged Brum's music scene at all and ask a random person in the UK which city has the best music scene I guarantee most won't say Brum. But that's what's changing like all the work Mist/Jaykae and lotto boyzz are doing in the mainstream then people like blue room mafia/lady sanity locally as well as the indie scene. We're gonna be the new madchester
I rate people like House of Pharoahs and a guy called Louis Culture but forreal who have they got that's next level? Look up Blue Room Mafia/Col3trane, Lady Sanity as well as all the legends in this video. Stefflon Don also technically from Brum haha.

WEST MIDZ!!!! Been waiting on this for time man.
The industry need to put respek on the West Mids. Grime would never had re-surged and therefor be where it is right now without brum emcees.
Why does every comment section for every video ever turn in to a UK vs US debate. KMT 😤
cause some people care too much about what americans got to say
And because their small-minded and actually let an accent get to them.
Cos yanks are dickheads!
Big up to Big Mikee, Silk City, Mystry..... the people that have been then from day one and doing their thing.
Birmingham scene is moving mad now. Watch for Dapz's new stuff coming this year!
Have so much love for Dapz.
Enjoyed that. Big up Brum from 0151
Sox & Devilman should have been in this too
The Ambivalent PS2 Bloke devilmam was at least in the example videos just before the jaykae part
I love this video. This is me. This is my music, This is my life. This is my home town. Watch out for me too yo!!! Can you believe I started off with Mike Skinner in his bedroom in West Heath... ?
As a Manc I've always respected the Brummies. True spirit against the odds. Great city.
Manc myself and lived near Brun for 11 years. One of my closest pals is a brummie. Top people are brummies
watching this from Cali, so interesting to see these diff music scenes across the world
Great documentary but more Sox required
He hasn't dropped any heat for a long, long time.

20:10 Mist a legend with the yank accent
Now let's get this straight, iam not exactly a young man anymore, however i was born and raised in Brum and miss her so bad at times. Still keep a finger on what's up..so from this old Brummie my kids downloaded, in support of these young musicians, some of their tunes, so y'all now on the Texas/ Mexican border and they love it. God Bless youngsters, and Mike ya still wrinkle free for a timer like me, all the best, continued success.
I’m from Birmingham, Alabama. I wish I was from this one though.
You would miss Jesus, Guns and fried food.
The original Birmingham.....!
Protect Filipe this Birmingham is the fucking best 😂
What’s Alabama Birmingham like ??
Great watch.
A Brummie and proud 🔛🔝👑👑
WOW - Kingshurst Yoof Club!!
I used to trip in there on a Thursday night 6 - 9pm
- then walk back to Chelmsley Wood with 3/4 dudes tripping ballz!!
Sneaking back into Mums house at 6am when she got up to go work!!
1990's acid days!
Jamelia was from Birmingham
EAR ART Yeah but that’s Pop music my dude. She’s not really doing anything these days anyway.
Who?
Was from would imply she is dead, the correct term is Jamelia is from Birmingham.
I thought she was from Smethwick? That's Black Country mate!
no cause she moved to london
Props to Mike Skinner for doing this... He's got some of these people on his new album, too. I remember when Original Pirate Material came out and he got some hate from the Birmingham scene he left behind. In many ways, he opened a lot of doors though.... I remember saying to some of those people on line to take it by the horns, then. It took some time.
0121 everyone
Chris1998 I hear what you're saying bro but even listen to what the people are saying in the documentary "it changed in the blink of an eye". When I talk to my mates in Manchester/London before they've never acknowledged Brum's music scene at all and ask a random person in the UK which city has the best music scene I guarantee most won't say Brum. But that's what's changing like all the work Mist/Jaykae and lotto boyzz are doing in the mainstream then people like blue room mafia/lady sanity locally as well as the indie scene. We're gonna be the new madchester
Tim Senna no be real now london rap scene is different level 🤣
I rate people like House of Pharoahs and a guy called Louis Culture but forreal who have they got that's next level? Look up Blue Room Mafia/Col3trane, Lady Sanity as well as all the legends in this video. Stefflon Don also technically from Brum haha.
We're the next Toronto bro
Tim Senna Spot on mate, the indie rock seen is kicking. Bands like Jaws/Sugarthief/Ivory Wave flying the flag proper
