I'll be highlighting various notable specimens from my Caribbean Shell Collection - more specifically, from my past trips to Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, and Jamaica over the past 4 years.
I'll also be discussing how utilizing the muriatic acid bath process can help to restore brilliancy to shells that have dulled due to calcium build ups. Below, you will also find some common guidance on the process for disposing of muriatic acid properly after use.

I wish you had been with me these last weeks on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. (The TRUE Outer Banks) The shelling was phenomenal, rare shells every day. Sea glass and other treasures. Wow, this is amazing! I have been to Ocracoke when I was younger, but have never been to some of the more remote spots there - I'd LOVE to go!
North Caicos is a gem - I 100% recommend a trip there! It's super remote, and a world away from the hub of Provo, but it's worth it!

What a fun mix in today's video! I am always so fascinated by the helmets. The aperture always makes me think of a toothy mouth ala little shop of horrors 😅. I really enjoyed your muriatic acid bath demonstration, too. Thanks for all your efforts & sharing!

I saw you had this one posted a couple of weeks ago but only now had some time to sit back and watch it. I really, really, really enjoyed this one, beautifully done (love the scenery portions & calming music in the background) and was so happy to see all of your shells from the Caribbean. BEAUTIFUL finds & I really enjoyed how you went back, with video, to the moments you found them. I remember some of those videos from those trips. My collection certainly isn't anywhere near yours but every time we get to the beach I find at least one new favorite. Most recent are sea biscuits from Holden Beach (yes, we finally made the 6 hour trip for a few days) and last year the largest shark eye (almost the size of a baseball) that I found at Cape Lookout, NC. I was one of the ones who commented, asking if there were still sea biscuits to be found, on your Holden Beach video. Luckily we had warmer weather when we went toward the end of March (sunny, high 70's - low 80's). As for the memories of finding them, I am trying to remember to at least get pictures of my special finds before picking up, but the memories of finding those special ones will always be vivid in my mind, every time I pick one of them up or even look at it, the memories of finding them come back. I really enjoy that you share your special moments finding beautiful shells and thank you for taking the time to do these beautiful videos, I'm sure they take a lot of time. Now I need to make the time to check out some of your videos from New England - definitely want to get up that way.

When the sand has an low oxygen level the seashells start turning black, natural colors of the shell them have a blend or twist in color. Then some are completely black.
Wish you had named them as you showed them. Love them.
I actually found it refreshing, a turn from the other similar videos who repeat names 3 times like we are in elementary school.

I appreciate this feedback! I have always tried to strike a balance here, with the text. Sometimes I feel it detracts from what I am attempting to demonstrate. There are some Shell ID's toward the end of the video here at 22:22, for the specimens that were cleaned!

It’s wonderful that there are people like us that love beach combing, aka shelling…. I would love to do this everyday but live in Ontario Canada and haven’t been able to travel in the last 3 years but this fall we are going to the Caribbean finally! Haven’t picked a spot yet but that’s the fun part! Loved your video…wondering which island would be better for shelling?
I love Canada! I was in Quebec, at the Gulf of St. Lawrence, very briefly last summer trying to do some shelling - I really want to get back this summer!
It's difficult for me to recommend shelling areas in the Caribbean because I have only briefly passed through these locations. Beaches can change overnight! My best guidance would be to venture away from the popular areas, and visit a more remote spot(if you are comfortable). This is the strategy I adopted when I traveled to the Caribbean. It won't work perfectly every time, but less trodden areas will be less picked over.

Hi Solace, I love your shell collection. Do you display them at home? The large shells, like the tritons trumpet look like a fabulous place to display a succulent or other plant life, even if its a faux plant. Thanks for taking me on your shelling adventures.
Unfortunately, at the moment, most of my collection lives in boxes and tupper-ware containers. When I'm not on a beach, I simply enjoy sorting through or cleaning some of my older shell finds - i's a cathartic experience for me.

Wondering how you get your shells home safely? Do you put them in 'checked' baggage , or carry on?
This is a great question! Of course I can only speak to my own experience, but I brought a bunch of tupper-ware containers and safely packed all of the shells into the middle of my checked luggage, on all of these trips. I never had any issues getting the shells home.

Did you do a cruise to Turk and Caicos? If so which one? How did you get to the part of the island you were shelling. I am doing a cruise February- March and want to go to at least one shell island. I hope you can help!
Hello! I actually travelled on my own to Turks and Caicos. The islands I went to were North and Middle Caicos. You can only get to North Caicos by ferry from Provo, and then Middle Caicos is connected to North by a causeway.
If you are on a cruise and stop at Turks and Caicos, you will most likely be stopping at the island of Grand Turk where the port of call is located. I am not sure if there are any ways to get from there to North or Middle, and I am also not sure the window for port of call would allow you enough time to do this.

I cant belueve you grabbed sand! Thought i was the only one who likes the sand, lol. Wonderfull that im not!
Edit to add: i have sand from the Phillipines. A guy i worked with went there to visit family on his wife's side one year. Didnt think to ask for a shell from there, 🙄.
I don't grab sand from every place, but if it's particularly striking I will. This bag of sand was from a black sand beach in SE Puerto Rico, and it was absolutely gorgeous!

I’m cruising in October and don’t have an excursion planned for our stop in Puerto Rico. Is there a good beach for shelling near the San Juan port?
I only collected shells in the eastern and south east sections of PR. It's a bit difficult to get out if you are just stopping in a port of call. I was in Fajardo for a couple of nights - this is about an hour drive from San Juan. I could recommend Playa Colora, and Playa Escondida - they are both a 30 min walking hike from the main road. Usually cruise stops give you a 6 - 8 hour window - it might just be enough time!

What is the pink spots some of the shells have on them.
I believe these are called Foraminifera, and are protists, which are single-celled amoeba-like organisms that grow a protective shell.

Do you get to keep and take those shelves Home
I can only speak to my personal experience, but I have never had any issues taking a limited amount of shells home from these locations in my suitcase. Depending on where one travels, I will always recommend to research local shelling/beach-combing laws!
