  • This silent film, likely from the 1940s (possibly late 1930s) shows viewers the highlights of Atlantic City. The film opens with an aerial shot of Atlantic City with its famous beach and board walk. Viewers see people enjoying the sun and sand on the beach. People line the street for the Miss America Pageant parade (01:05). Women pose on the Miss Atlantic City float. Various people march, including people in Native American dress and Atlantic City Mummers. Viewers see an AFL float. The contestants pose for a photographer. Beachgoers sunbathe on the beach with the pier and Ferris wheel in the background (02:20). Three women show off their bathing suits. Men push visitors in carts down the boardwalk. A shot from a moving car shows some of the large houses in Atlantic City (02:57). Men play golf, people sail small boats, and crowds gather to watch the parade of horses before the horserace. At the racetrack, the horses take off, running around the rack (03:58). A boat named Julia C leaves a dock (04:22). Tourists ride out in observation boats to get a view of Atlantic City from the water. People mill around the entrance to the Steel Pier (04:58). Children ride on a carousel; other people ride the Ferris Wheel and another ride. A girl enjoys cotton candy. Several people head out on a charter boat for deep sea fishing. The woman’s line catches and she reels in a fish (05:56). On shore, men cast lures out into the waves and reel in the lines. Children swim in a swimming pool. There are shots of the neon signs of Atlantic City’s various businesses. Viewers see a variety show performance on ice (07:30). Beachgoers beat the heat with shaded bungalows. The film concludes with a group of young men and women running down the beach to the surf.

Casinos ruined AC. It’s more like a dumping ground now. It could be easily rehabilitated and gentrified

Wow, from a great seaside resort town with beautiful homes in manicured neighborhoods to a utter slum. Those houses are long gone in favor of section 8 housing they started building in the early 70's. The old hotels are long demolished in favor of high rise casino's. The only seaside hotel left is the old Claridge Hotel now owned by Raddison. With gambling legal in PA Atlantic City has lost a ton of business from the Philadelphia crowd.
