- Three great mods in one project. Why settle for what you get in a kit when you can, for less money, get quick throttle, soft grips and heat the way you want it.
In this video I trash the OEM Yamaha heated grips (now discontinued by Yamaha) and make it quick throttle, heated grips with Progrip soft touch.

We are putting a small hole in the big part of the grip (inner end) on the throttle side & then zip tying the the wires to the grip. One of our guys had his wire break & short to the throttle cable frame. Shut the bike down (drained the battery).

Great video. I use the same setup on my bikes but I find it better to use 2 x sets of grips, that way you can put 2 x throttle grips on the bars so that they fit easier and are the same diameter. I use the 2 x clutch side grips on my mountain bike.

Hello. nice experiment with handles and heating. I would like to hear after a while how long the Chinese heating will last, and how it has proven itself. A question for you. I see you installed a steering damper. where did you buy it and how much did it cost? And one more question, what are your new buttons on the steering wheel? what are they for?

Hmm... interesting, I really like the grips from the Daytona heated grips, but the throttle response is a little bit long on the World Raid as well, I see some are changing it with a R6 throttle. Always nice to spend time in the mancave doing stuff to the bike. I'm making my ready for winter storage this weekend. No more riding this season. Great video Rob, and thank you for the links. Indeed long travel on the stock throttle. Do you have an idee if the r6 throttle tube is the same length? Any idea on the part number?

Soft grips on DRY'S solid then just Nip EM up with a bit of wire
Best of three worlds - hopefully, Robert. Depends on a test ride. Your video shows clearly how individual a bike needs to be to get the most out of it.

Having watched your video I decided to order the same throttle kit. My grip was a barstad to get of the tube! Also it says that the ends knock out. They don't. You have to cut them. What throttle cam did you use? I found cam B was the largest and would give shortest travel but it wouldn't fit in the throttle housing. I ended up using cam T which has made negligible difference. I wonder if the R6 tube would have been the better option?

Thanks! It's not shorter but it has a different form that makes it feel a bit shorter.
Not sure about the vendors. I found it in a shop in a nearby town.
Sorry to crash the party, but the Torq1 throttle tubes sucks. If you buy the standard ones, you have to peel and carve the rubber off with a lot of effort. The tubes is very short, and especially the clutch side. I’ll try to melt/glue some old tube on it, to make them longer, but we will see how it goes 😅 The cams didn’t make it so much better than the original tube. The best cams was cam B (have to grind some plastic of it to make it fit) and cam T. Maybe i will try out the R6 tube instead, and hope that it works better 😄 Thanks for the effort to help us out though 🤗

Possibly a hint on the cables on the throttle side: the cables might be rubbery and might not slide well against the throttle cable housing - slipping a piece of PTFE (teflon) tubing (slit open to put around) as well as cutting a small notch into the grips might aide in keeping the throttle from getting sticky as well as keeping the heater element cables from rubbing open (thus shorting in the wet) ;-)

I received my Terrain Command and I hesitate to do like you or put everything on the left with CEV modules.
Hi! I did this setup because the indicators and light switch would be too far away. Having them together would be nice but this setup works very well too and I have adapted to it.
Hair spray works well to help get grips on and when it dries they stick well. Makin' Bacon. What about that. A barbieque. Good job Robert. Twist the grip RTW. Come on over when it warms up again. You have some miles on it now, so how is the clutch. Time to change it? Recluse Clutch.
Thanks! I have not checked the clutch (plates) yet but as long as it feel good I think I will leave it. I have the parts to change it on the shelf. Recluse is cool but on my shopping list.

I used to use Symtec heat panels on my bike. They were always very good. Never ran foam grips though, doesn't the foam insulate you from the heat more than rubber grips?
They should insulate more, but the heat I get is good from the setup.
I used a stick on grip heater element, that came with a big piece of shrink wrap tubing for the left grip, as the insulator.
The aluminum bar sucks heat from grip...............it was a little bit of a pain to get it stuck right but it all worked great!
A throttle grip goes on the left side over the shrink wrap.
Thanks. The kit in this video came with two plastic handles. Then the element and soft grips. So there is insulation from the bar

cool. i was doing the same thing yesterday, except trying to tame/delay the initial power. Sort of the opposite problem you have. I get too much gas right off the bat. I also forgot to make the hole for the bar-ends too, lol.

Nice how too video 📹 Rob, you should definitely feel the benefit of the grips. I put ( wrestled!) Grip puppies over my OEM heated grips and A, there is still plenty of heat, and B, it's much more comfortable, not just grip wise but somehow my arm position is better. It's a good idea to clean and grease the throttle tube occasionally. I also fitted an Atlas throttle lock, which I was nervous of using but it's brilliant on long road trips. Cheers, Steve

Bit late now but I found Oxford heated grips really hot, and the software switch them off after stopping when you gas up

Hi Robert, before I fit those grips I would be very curious to hear about your experiance now after using the grips sometime. Did they reduce any buzz for example?
I like the grips because theyre soft and always grippy even in wet. Downside is perhaps diameter of grip increased some. They reduce vibrations if any

Hi. Yes they are great and take all the beatings. I have no weights and I bout them from off-the-road.de who has a T7 version that screws right in to the original threads.

Honda makes quality bikes for sure. The new Transalp is a bit more street oriented but I guess they have aimed for that market. Since I want more offroad its not for me. Thanks 🙏

Robert you should have gone with the heat demon under grip heaters. Much better heat that than the Chinese ones. I've used the Chinese ones on other bikes and they pale in comparison. Beware also they shunt extra heat through the wires when on high and tend to melt wires!! Heat demon use a second foil for high setting. I also use an R6 oem throttle tube that gets the same results. Popular mod for the bike as well as MT07 etc.

Great video again. I was thinking of installing the OEM Yamaha heated grips on my World Raid until I saw your video so I ordered the stuff you installed. But how did you connect the heating pads to the battery? Directly to it or via another connection (and what connection/cable)? Thanks :)
Thanks. The heating kit comes with cables and switch so in the end you have two bare ends that needs to connect to the ignition power.

The problem with heated grips is in the design of the entire cocpit.
The right handle, and heaters attach to the plastic tube, not the handlebar itself.
The left handle everything attaches to the handlebar.
That means the left one always waste power heating the handlebar:
Solution is to buy 2 sets, use throttle handle on both sides but make sure left one cant rotate as the throttle does.
Workarounds include isolation between heater and handlebar, but that makes it bigger in diameter as well.
I used screw on grips on left side also so its the same on both sides 👍🏻
The work around, is a piece of shrink wrap tubing between left grip and bar, and a throttle grip goes over the shrink wrap.
Nice modification, I am considering foamies as well. I did get a bit annoyed by you checking your watch every minute or so. Gives me the impression your absent to the task. (Like as I'm dealing with one of my teenagers). But maybe I'm getting old 😉🙃

What kind of glue did you use for the foam grips?
I asked for long drying grip glue in the shop
I used symtec foil heaters in the past and they were good although the left side spent most of its energy heating the bars! I never got on with the foam grips as found them too short and the raised section hurt my thumb and gave me blisters so I ended up filing them down. I have used progrip rally grips for years now and find them excellent and you can wire them for extra security. No longer bother with heated grips as they don't keep my finger tips and tops of my hands warm which are the parts that get cold. Heated gloves are a game changer.

Using the gloves with lithium batteries? Or plug into bike?
@@bradsanders6954 I plug into the bike via a heated under jacket. I was dubious about it at first as I thought it would be hassle but it's fine and the gloves I chose are not bulky like some. I just find the gloves far more effective than using heated grips.
What a cool idea. Would you lose throttle travel at lower speeds though when you might need it for more technical stuff? I wonder if anyone makes an elliptical one which is normal at low speeds then shortens as you open her up??
I feel its good also in low since its not so drastic. Oval wheels could work and I think they exist

@@NomadSweden I ask because I put the biggest cam, and I feel that the cables are rubbing against the inside of the shield. If you turn the handlebars to the left/right, the throttle return cable gets a little bit stuck. It's just that the other cams seem to me the same size as the original...

If you still have the Oxford heated grips controller you can use that to control your new ones as well. Just connect your new heating elements to where your old grips connected and Bob’s your uncle!
Nice. But I didn't have oxford. I had Yamaha OEM with integrated controls.
Hi, have you done this personally? The Oxford grip controller puts out a higher wattage than the supplied switch. Any issues with the wires or pads getting too warm?
@@redknight7817 yeah I had this setup on my Africa Twin CRF1000.
Ohms law:
P=U*I
I=U/R
P=(U*U)/I
I.e the Oxford controller does not put out a maximum wattage (power), it can regulate the power fed to the heating elements but the maximum power drawn (at 100% setting) is always dependent on the resistance of the heating elements and the battery voltage.
So, as long as the controller has a higher power rating than the heating elements you connect, you will be fine.
I didn’t have any problems with the setup for the year or so I used it. I was worried about the cables coming loose from the film like material but I secured them extra with kapton tape and cable ties.

Actually I don't remember but I can check. However I want it even quicker, so I will try a larger wheel than the one I chose. But I do like the change, so it's a good mod.

What brand is the "screw on grip" which you used on the left side?
Same as on the right side 😊 one kit had two grips
