The most important thing is her contribution to the community. She is using her skill to good use and trying her very best to play well for the audience.
I think that to, as well as Annique actually gives a good contribution to her community to learn on what is good and what can be done better, but also to know that it’s a tough road and there are many steps to go work on.
I totally agree with you. I felt the same way and I am a trained pianist. On the other hand, it could be very uplifting to young children to see her playing piano and make them want to emulate her. She sets a good example for young people.
I don't think Beethoven actually said that, but I agree with the sentiment. It would have been better for Kate to hit a few wrong notes, but to hit those wrong notes beautifully.
Yes. Btw, her playing is to SUPPORT THEIR CAUSE. Not try to impress some youtube piano teachers. You gave her a 1/10 is still a number. ...but. Little insulting because she didnt ask for numbers. She just trying to bring the attention to the Firm's causes. So, it is completely irrelevant you doing this video.
I can’t even imagine where she finds the time to practice piano with her hectic schedule and tending to her 3 kids. Kudos to her for even playing this piece for the charity intro
Oh come on! She doesn't need to be rated. I have an M.Mus. and was a piano major for my B.S. Mus. Ed. Not sure even I could stand up to your critique, nor do I consider myself a professional. Brava Kate for being so open to sharing your talent. Please try to lift people up and not tear them down.
To be honest, people are just not used to German honesty. 0 means, you are a bloody beginner, 1 that you have achieved the basic goales, and it is fair to say, that there are still many steps to do to play like Evgeny Kissin. Giving the princess 5 points would degrade a master pianist as Martha Argerich is. Annique is just giving her audience, who are mostly bloody beginners, a reference. As many people ask what it takes to become a professional pianist. So watching the rating from this point and having a linear rating in mind, it is a fair rating and from her explanation, the princess actually did very positive.
@@coleptera180I totally disagree. You can't "grade" a non-professional against Martha Argerich, because most of us would be zeros. This tearing down is a bit arrogant and narrow-minded. If one insists on grading a non-professional, then they should be graded in their amateur category, where she would certainly do well. Would many of us find it fair to be compared to Rafael Nadal as tennis players?
Princess Catherine's participation for 'For Those Who Can't Be Here' with Tom Walker was longer and there were more snippets of her as well. And she was also using the pedal. I'm not sure though but I think it was recorded live.
Hi, Annique. I am a subscriber to your channel, and I liked this little review until, well, the very end. Why do you need to compare her 10 second cameo performance to a classical concert pianist? You complimented her posture and her playing in "the heart of the keys," both of which are often amiss amongst non-professional players. Good. And the insights you gave regarding stress in the body, (lack of) flexibility in the wrist, entering/releasing the notes, and so on, were good. Okay. You then assessed (based on a 10 second cameo) that she is a beginner/lower intermediate player (hard to tell from the video; she did have lessons as a child, and I suspect is certainly not a beginner and is likely beyond lower intermediate.) She has loads of other responsibilities, is a hobbyist, and yet finds healing and pleasure in music. (Something many of us amateurs do.) You then proceeded to rate her a 1/10 compared to a professional pianist. Where is the fairness in that? Your video would have been fine without that. Just clip out from 5:30 on. Honestly, it is meaningless and just felt mean and unwarranted.
I agree! Even judging someone’s technique that much in 10 seconds is a bit unfair. I can watch 10 seconds of Vladimir Horowitz and also say his posture is bad, fingers are too flat, wrist isn’t moving. Obviously that would be ridiculous! Her critique was unnecessarily harsh.
And your evaluation of her evaluation of the playing is even more ridiculous. She says numerous times throughout the video that certain things are hard to judge because of how short the video clip is, so admitted that she was only going by that clip. She at no point said that this is hardcore fact, and that there is no wiggle room for error. She pointedly said that certain things are hard to judge because of the brevity of the video. Did you miss that?
I didn't know that Catherine was aiming to be a classical, concert pianist. It will be difficult to manage all of that with her many royal duties. I thought she was simply using her love of music to help bolster a cause. I guess I was wrong.
There's no indication that Princess Catherine aspires to become a classical musician. Like millions of people, she may enjoy playing piano for the sheer JOY of it.🎶
In contrast to your reaction, I enjoyed this video because everyone was exhalting over her ability to be a great pianist as well as a great princess and I had thought --Really ? I'm not so sure but because I know nothing about piano and music, I'd thought-- wow, okay, I guess I'm wrong. She's a superstar. BUT she's NOT. SHE'S just a woman like us, a commoner who learned how to be a princess by being very self-contained, very straight to the point of severity when she was younger. THAT does not transfer to music. SHE did it I guess it's a good cause and if that made money or something of that sort for the charity, bully for her, but I think it's good to keep things like this in perspective. I'm sure if she heard this video, she might actually gain some knowledge from it because she's learned how to be a royal. I think she would bring that same open attitude of willing to learn how to be better at whatever she's doing to this video and it would probably help her a lot. It probably would help her in her role as a princess and her role as a wife and a mother to be a little less stiff. I remember her early years as a princess, she was extraordinarily stiff and she has loosened up a lot and you can see it in her hairstyle & her makeup-- a lot less make-up than when she was younger-- and in her attitude toward her family and toward the British people. SHE'S now in middle-age, at age 40, so she's ready for another change which would be a further loosening up of her her inner being which can only bode well🕊️
I took enjoyed her performance. I intensely did me dislike critics.. I perceive her playing was to encourage others. This woman is looking for her 15 me nutes of fame I applaud Catherine. This woman is a disgrace. .
Catherine doesn't claim to be classicly trained. She said she had lessons as a child, and really played more during Covid. She just enjoys it.She shouldn't be judged its not like she is recording as an artist!
Judging with the intent to harm is bad, but to educate it is extremely necessary and beneficial. If all judging was bad, then I guess a physician's 2nd opinion would no longer mean anything.
It's easy to understand why Kate may have appeared stiff and not relaxed and too much concentrated on the notes. Imagine the criticism she would have faced if she made a mistake. The trolls would be all over Twitter to call her out. Well-known people like her can't catch a break. They are criticized for whatever they do. I don't fault Kate for being maybe uncomfortable in this clip. I think her playing was fine for someone who is not a professional musician.
Well said. Why would this person even be commenting on Princess Catherine. I love her. They can't even get a break. I'm sick of them constantly saying something about every move they make. I don't know how Princess Catherine does all she does. She's amazing. And she sounded good to me and looked stunning!
This woman is just giving her professional view, which she's entitled do. The playing was probably fine, but not great from a professional point of view. It's perfectly fine to give this view, no matter who is being reviewed. My tuppenceworth!
I think some people can't resist and just looking for a hair In an egg !! Princess of Wales have no ambition to be professional Pianist nor compete with anyone ; she plays for pleasure as many of us do , even though we know we're not Rubinsteins . Doesnt matter . She played nicely and looked beautifully , certainly contributed and Added some pizzas to popular event .👌
While I understand she is far from being a classically trained concert pianist, I also think a score of 1/10 is very harsh! Would a 0 be someone who never touched a piano? Low intermediate has to merit at least more than a 1, right? 😅
@@nadz_luv Annique is judging her skills in a performance setting and not a casual (for fun) setting -- if it was in a casual setting, Annique probably would have given her a higher score. In the performance world, the skills shown by Kate in this video are very very very rudimentary, hence 1/10.
@@meeguelangelo Have to disagree. Rudimentary would be Chopsticks or Heart and Soul (beginner's edition). The ONLY reason Middleton was asked to perform is her royal status, PERIOD, and for that I think she should be cut some slack. It's not like she won some prestigious piano competition then bombed on a public performance! This makes me wonder how Anneke would grade a piano student performing in a community recital: Does the student get judged against the best performance we can imagine, or do we take into account the whole context - that it's a bunch of students there to have fun (most of whom have NO ambition to become concert pianists)?
This little narcissist piano opinion ( opinions are like butt holes) every body has one, Was singled out because she's a royal. As was stated in the beginning of her video. Let's put her under the microscope and let's judge her on having class , and how she would rate as a Royal. Which she has I rate of 1 or less in achieving. There is a saying. Judge not for you will be judged in like manner. My point being, no not one is perfect. There is only one judgement in this life. What will your score be when we're each judged.
Fine tips but grade seems a bit harsh. How can a lower intermediate be 1/10 haha. Maybe could have explained the rating and scale you used instead of just ending the video. I think a better video to judge her playing is from last year’s song, For Those Who Can’t Be Here. It’s a live performance where she accompanies the singer. She plays perfectly fine for a hobbyist with no serious training.
Wow! One?? Really? I've judged lots of pianists over the years. You have to factor in the difficulty level of the piece. She's not playing Rachmaninoff. I would give her a solid 8. She did well with what she was given.
the scale she was using was not 'how well she played the piece', it was level of training with 0 being beginner and 10 being professional. Expressing this as a scale was a bit confusing and odd though
@Lewis Levits Annique is germam, not asian. The fact that every piano player is asian in your mind seems pretty racist to me. Also, princess Catherine is not Queen.
Woah, there seem to be loads of royalist here. Maybe because I'm not a royalist or English or maybe I just understand and appreciate the unbiased honesty in German culture, but as a piano student in her second year, I really appreciate the tips given by Annique because I noticed that they applied to me, too. I tried to notice my posture and my wrist movement afterwards when I practiced. I think I'd give me 1/10, too, which isn't too bad as I don't see it as "less that 5/10, you've failed". I see it more as, level 1: you've mastered some basics, but not all basics, i.e. posture, breathing, wrist/arm movements. My piano teacher has graduated from the conservatory, but she's probably somewhere between level 7 or 8. I hope to at least reach 3/10, relaxed playing in front of an audience.
Her giving pointers to other is not a problem. But to critic someone who obviously is not professional and is doing this as she wants to give respect and visibility to Ukraine, uncalled for.
@@anneharton5013 welcome to TH-cam. Everyone critiques everyone, especially celebrities. I bet it's the reason you clicked on the video. Just because someone s an amateur doesn't mean they should not, under any circumstances, be reviewed. If it's posted on the internet, it's fair game.
Finally some sane people here… I feel there are too many comments directly attacking Annique on the personal level without even watching the video. They criticise Annique to be jealous and harsh, but are judgy, racist and mean themselves, this world cannot discuss on a rational level anymore. Really sad. Thanx for giving me some hope.
@@TheUltimateLegend7 Absolutely correct, anyone should be allowed to share their two cents. And just the same, people don't have to agree with it. It is however probably creating a boost for her channel with the extra comments. I don't see anyone saying they are unsubcribing because of it though.
Hi, great advice, I love playing the piano, fortunately taught myself at the age of 15yrs, I am 53yrs old in August, so been playing 38yrs, i agree the whole body needs to be involved, also wrist technique is important, I was playing the 1st movement of the moonlight, and that technique relies a lot on the wrist movement to achieve the pianisimo, and correct tempo, also just got introduced to a fab mozart sonata the 1st movement of the k331 in A minor, great sonata to go with my k545 1st movement mozart, music is a wonderfull God given gift 🎁, greetings from wales uk.
Adrian, thank you so much for your dispassionate informed reaction. Most of these comments are completely misplaced. Catherine would learn from this video, just as she learned how to move from a position of commoner to Royal because she was open to learning. I think she would have found this video fascinating and she would follow some of its points to improve her ability to play which I truly feel would improve even more her ability to function as a wife & as a mother & as a royal princess to the English people.
She knew she would be criticised, yet she did it. Thats what she does for my country. She is not a vapid celebrity, she is the Princess of Wales now. God save the King. I was never a royalist until we as a country were attacked as racists. We have some idiots, but Jubilee and Coronation shows we are so not. To play openly takes guts.
Princess Kate did not claim that she is a professional piano player. She explained this during her accompaniment with Tom Walker. She was nervous and very careful not to commit any mistake on the keys hence she was a little stiff. I think you have no right to critic her like a proffesional piano EXPERT like you. Stop nitpicking her. And if I am Princess Kate and really wanted to be good at the piano I can hire somebody that is better than you. So no thank you for the offer. Be careful narcissistic tendencies is showing up.
When you can be a Princess, and take over her job: every aspect, from appearance to being a working Royal, and being in the public eye 24/7: then you can rate her.
Agree. The fact that she did this for Ukaraine, UK and Eurovision means so much. Princess Catherine, never claimed that she is classically trained. Too bad, some people do not understand how to be fair.
@@pjwu2338 if you look back in history you will find that people entertained in their homes in a room called a parlor. No tv or radio. Just an acoustic piano. Young girls learned to play the piano as part of their general education. When company called, the young girls of the house would play for the guests and sometimes there might be a sing along. Especially during Christmas. Now it is a holdover tradition, especially in the Southeastern United States.
@@anneharton5013 huh, Annique is giving Kates video more attention and brings it to the next level, by kindly providing learning information to other amateurs + generating views on Kates video and tax money for Ukraine, pretty sure, this video is a win for the world. Silence wouldn’t be.
The Princess of Wales didn't claimed that she's a virtuoso in playing the piano. Such piano learned people not bothered to criticized her playing, she only did it in behalf of doing so.ething good for the Eurovision's campaign and ad. And for those piano geniuses save your comments to the likes of Bach and Bethoven, it would make you more knowledgeable than critiquing piano players who only plays it for sharing even just a little talent they have.
Her piano skill were decent and she participated for Eurovision opening for the sake of diplomacy/soft PR as a member of the Royal family. (It was heavily edited due to some collaboration.)

I don't agree with the critic. I read Princess Catherine was Grade 3 Piano and Grade 5 Theory. I have been playing my piano my entire life and am Grade 3 on Accordion. I was so impressed with her and to memorize too! All aspects of her performance were beautiful.
I wasn't particularly impressed - she's an upper-class citizen, so you'd expect her to be able to afford the best musical training, even if it were just to play at Eurovision.
... ok I feel like people are not familiar with German rating systems and thinking. 0-10 are grades. So basically if you have and exam with 100 points, getting a grade 1 means you got 10 points right. And I think it's fair, considering to become a professional pianist there are at least 90 points more needed
Knock your crap off. She played piano and did a great job. She doesn't have to be perfect in everything. Just the fact that she shared that part of her life with us is great!
I am just looking forward for your Ballade No. 1 drop! I’ve been watching your shorts and I was fascinated by your interpretation; and I really do want to hear the full Ballade no. 1! ❤❤
The first thing I noticed is that she did not looked relaxed. But maybe it's her way or being focused, considering the pressure. I dunno about other amateur pianists around but playing with everyone listening are the moments I feel the most exposed in my whole life... It is a real challenge to play how she did.
I'm a big supporter of our Princess of Wales for her charity work especially with young children and those with special needs. She isn't a professional pianist and it's probably not the right way to criticise our princess. She leads a busy lifestyle as a mother of 3 and an ambassador of many charities. I appreciate the video giving advice for beginners and maybe it could have been worded differently to not appear so harsh. I feel you have offended many people with your criticism.
I like the tips on how to be a better piano player. However, I think you need to review according to the person's goal. Catherine is really just a mum who rediscovered piano after having played as a child. She's not a professional pianist and won't ever be one. However, playing at home and practicing daily would be setting a great example for her children. Also, doing something outside of her comfort zone is a great example. I think she deserves a much higher score as an "average mum playing the piano". Rating her on a professional scale is basically telling everyone who plays at a basic level for enjoyment that they shouldn't bother.
I found the video quite encouraging. Although princess Kate is only a hobbyist she achieved level 1 on a scale from 0-10, so she is already a quite good beginner. The video explained in detail many things people forget, as e.g. positioning and wrist movement. It shows that is not important if you play all notes right, but that there are many other things to consider and the princess did it quite well.
There are videos on TH-cam of Richard Nixon playing the piano. Like Kate Middleton, he hit all the right notes in the right time, but played stiffly and could have improved the musicality quite a bit. Not surprising considering what a stiff guy he was in general. Still, neither he nor Kate Middleton were professional musicians, so I think their efforts aren't that bad for amateurs.
I wouldn’t say she’s a 1 lol geez. It seems she’s not been trained much and does it as a hobby based on her technique and what she’s playing. I would rate her early intermediate, so maybe a 3
@@nicholasng9814A 1 relative to what? The music she is playing is about level 3 or 4 RCM. Just a guess because idk what she’s playing but it’s not level 1 for sure. She’s a late beginner at worst. Not an advanced player obviously but also not complete beginner. Like I said I’d give her a 2 or 3
She was the bestttt❤everyone can improve something, even you. you are a professional, she did it as something extra. it doesn't even make sense to evaluate it
Kate is so multitalented and it’s amazing how she can find time to practice, as well as having the confidence to put her performance out there on the world stage for everyone to criticise!
Not gonna lie - it would be very cool if you would react to some artists playing the piano from the Eurovision Song Contest this year and previous years and do they actually play if they have a self-playing piano for ex. Estonia 2023.
Time is a hard, they could’ve employed professional musician and paid them that would’ve been useful. The royal family can be critiqued and their critiquing piano playing and I found these professional paint pianist. I am discussed was incredibly useful wasn’t mean it was helpful and if she watched it, Catherine could improve a piano playing. Sycophantic adoration is really not required as she married into the family. The family are here because they were born. There’s no particular skill in that we’ve all done it
I credit you critique of the piano skills of our future Queen. She may inspire many young people to take an interest in real acoustic music as opposed to electronic. Both have their place.
Women are damned if they do, damned if they don’t. I hope Kate inspires children (and maybe even adults) to pick up piano if it’s something they might enjoy.
Firstly she is not proclaiming to be the best piano player in the world and it was a long time since was taught back in school. However, take a look here at another performance she did... the fact you could say you have the future Queen of UK playing Piano in your band video I think goes beyond how perfect she plays but, that she plays at all and not half bad :) th-cam.com/video/dyXBfAjDj-A/w-d-xo.html
Princess of Wales enjoys playing she is not a concert pianist. And where do you come off critiquing her. Leave it alone, we the majority enjoyed her, and she is a very brave and talented individual too go out before the entire world and display her talent, and love of music.. So your done what ever you have too say, it should be positive, pleasant , and applauded. If not sit down shut up, grow up
I thought you were kind but felt you could have rated the Princess of Wales higher. We love her so she could play chopsticks and we would still love it. She only played piano as a young teen for a short time, and probably didn't play for years. She showed a great deal of courage to use what casual musical skills she possesses to assist with fundraising for charity, a far greater purpose than playing to impress critics. For her generous gesture alone I rate her performance a 10. She may rate less technically but she accomplished her mission. Your suggestions are noted and perhaps she will contact you to assist her. We're looking forward to her future musicales.
Hi. I have a question. I can't even play a scale on piano relaxed with both hands.. left hand can only hit octaves. Are there any ANY exercises that I should practice so that I could get to the level of beginner pianist? So that I could play a scale slowly but relaxed? Kinda random I know but any advice you could give would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.❤
Here’s a small tip, if you’re learning the C major scale (only white keys) as your first scale, skip it! It’s actually one of the hardest scales, even though it seems the easiest due to lack of black keys. Try instead B major, D flat major, or G flat major. These were the first three scales Chopin taught his students because they fit naturally with the shape of our hands. You can find great videos on how to play them on youtube!
The Princess of wales has posture, she’s been in training for over 20 years, she has to sit as stiff as a board because she’s trained to sit that way. We can’t have a slob as a princess, etiquette must be followed at all times because they are in the spotlight! I thought she did incredibly well, I think she’s more of a 6-10 not a 1 that’s just mean.
I think you make a good point. I wonder if it would even be possible for someone in her position to be allowed to play with passion and free movement. What an interesting thought
Posture?, …piano posture-?! ~ Brings to mind the ‘perfect’ posture of Glenn Gould, …”perfect” In the sense of what *not* to do, even though he pulled it off beautifully. W0W-‼️, you ranked Royal Kate 🫅🏼as a “☝🏼”, …really-?, …a 0ne-⁉️, after you called her an intermediate [sic] which means {lit.} ‘somewhere’ in the middle. Gee, I guess I’d be like a “minus -45”, then.
I was today years old when I found out what "heart of the keys" means! I DO love playing there, but had no idea that was what that phrase meant! So cool!
Why are we even judging her? Can't we enjoy her playing? She is beautiful and she can play! Whether she is making mistakes or not doing right is her problem. Is she realizes she is doing something wrong and is willing to correct it, it is her own decision. She is an adult in charge of her life. If I know something I do not compare myself to others. We are unique and therefore do our own things differently. There is no better way or worse way. We are in constant learning mode for our own benefit not for others.
Annique is not judging Kate. Annique analysis the piano skills of a celebrity to explain what could be done better … now, there are people who want to have clear feedback, because it helps them to improve their skills and understand at what level their skills are. Annique’s rating to me sounds hard, but fair and I think she would rate any other performance based on the same criteria. Anyway, her explanation on the left hand as well as posture are very helpful.
@@pjwu2338 I m sure the princess of Wales did not ask for an analysis. In this case all she has to do is demonstrate how to do it. I have no doubt she knows what she is talking about. I just wish people would not judge or analyze others.

I realize that the clip of her playing was short, but we barely got to see her playing. Next time show the parts you are commenting on longer. It was hard to see what you were commenting on.
I was learning to play Polonaise in college and my back and shoulders hurt from the effort. When I watch Horowitz play it fortissimo in his 80s, I was completely astounded.
Wow harsh critique from a master pianist to a beginner. Probably not going to get any requests for piano lessons from Buckingham Palace after this video.
Marc G it's obvious that girlfriend is above teaching anyone. None if them are good enough for her. And personally, I wouldn't allow her to mess with my child's emotional wellbeing. My piano teacher was talented but he also had a special knack with children. I can't picture this person doing anything but making a child hate the piano and cry before every lesson..
She needs to watch the video. Kim's story, How Great Tho Art. The Collingsworth family. She has the anointed gift. A true talent. Thank God, she never had a obnoxious person stunt her talent that could have been destroyed by the likes of a concert pianist know it all.
The Princess of Wales did a fabulous job! She was probably playing to an accompaniment track (to keep all the performers on the beat) and probably was recorded multiple times times for the videographers. This is all more challenging for any amateur. Your rating of 1 is uncalled for and brutal!
Probably wants a lot of views using Princess Catherine’s very short rendition and delivering the 1/10 rate to sound so professional. Who does that? I’m disappointed. ‘seems the person’s character is starting to show.
So watching the rating from this point and having a linear rating in mind, it is a fair rating and from her explanation, the princess actually did very positive.
@@coleptera180 I see your point but this just shows why numerical ratings can be subjective and ambiguous. Probably best not to use them when critiquing others as everyone will use different factors for their judgments. Hi Annique, nice to meet you! Hope you had fun on your Chopin exam??? You may not believe this, but ever since I was a kid, like 15 years old, I remember every single note of Mozart's Sonata in Am (turkish march), and I can play it for the most part, but it doesn't feel natural to me, and I have no clue where to place my fingers, because I can't play sheetmusic :( you would think my difficulty would be in the faster part, but no, that I can figure out, but how to oscillate an entire octave in the second part of the song. I always seem to misplace my fingers. People tend to say that Campanella from Frans Liszt is so difficult because of those oscillations (I don't know, are those called oscillations, because that is what I mean), but nuhuh, not for me, that I can do, but with the turkish march it seems like mission impossible for me.... any advice???
Are you serious? She’s not a concert pianist…she’s a very diverse, intelligent highly motivated woman and gorgeous to boot. Kudos to her bravery and ambition. Why don’t you just compliment her then put a period at the end. Your intentions are suspect.
Yiiiiiikes. If that 1 is just for the dress and Catherine actually warranted a zero, I would be, like, a -2. Carry on. Us piano plebs will show ourselves out.
Rina n Mike, I know it seems strange in this day and age to give a dispassionate analysis of something that you are an expert in but I would say --Get used to it because we've had enough of this prejudiced, biased way of looking at all the different 🤩 stars in our lives. We are all just human beings and we have our good points and we have our weak points and I think Catherine would appreciate this video. THE reason she was able to move from commoner to Royal is cuz she was open and willing to learn & to change. IN this too, she would be open and willing to learn how to change so that she could play better. The changes that she would incorporate into her music would be incorporated into her life which is actually a work of art and it would benefit her life and herself and her family and the nation of England.😊
I couldn't agree more . Princess of Wales gets a 1000% rating for putting up with all she has to deal with the options of the common folk casting stones.
you could've searched for a longer video of her playing the piano.. For example, the one in the Christmas Carole 2021.. It may not be focused on her playing but you will hear how she played it..
it's a shame more people don't consider physics as being romantic . . . I've always held the contention that proper romance involves the correct application of physics . . . just like in piano performances where it's important to maintain movement, rhythm and timing to develop meaningful phrasing and expression, the flow in romance should be continuous and that there are no interruptions in motion or the use of energy so that the only conclusion is the satisfaction of all parties involved . . . People get very heated if you critique her in any way. Its like shes viewed as perfect or something. It's great that she tried but obviously she needs improvement. What's the big deal?
I’m Canadian, and certainly not a monarchist. Princess Kate is a mother and princess with many duties. I have never heard her proclaim that she was a classical pianist. Therefore, for you to hold up the measuring stick for a classical pianist, and declare that she falls far short of that is extremely rude, and definitely unnecessary. If you want to pick apart, somebody’s performance please, from now on choose someone who is advertising themselves as a classical pianist not a mother doing her best to fulfil her duties by sharing her talent. I found this extremely offensive.
I agree. Rude. Envious. Distasteful. Annique doesn’t seem to possess the character of a truly gifted person. Excuse me, she’s not even a Lang Lang at this point.
Yep, precisely well said!👌🏼 Just a nobody trying to raise & promote herself for open doors into the palace...more like for a commercial advantage & self branding (with her sly crafty unprofessionalism with no respect & honour, no way! No deal for Pretenders like her!) Just an arrogant jackass Woke thinking she's Lang Lang & she is NOT even on par with any commercial pop pianist like Billy Joel, Harry Connick Jr, Elton John or even young Charlie Puth! Do we see a Pro like Elton John going on a public platform to correct, comment or worst...grade a non-professional or commercial pianist but just a wife & mother who loves music & trying to enjoy herself @ the keyboard!
@@melinda395 Kate was being judged in a performance setting. In performance settings, skills are scrutinized tenfold. To a casual viewer, Kate can appear to be "amazing" or "so talented", but to professional eyes such as Annique's, Kate's skills are quite rudimentary. If Kate as-is were to attempt to admit to a college for undergrad studies in piano, she would be told to go get more lessons before trying to study. Never once in the video did Annique insult Kate, instead she gave constructive criticism and suggested solutions for them. It's not as deep as you make it out to be. Annique has nothing to envy Kate for -- your comment is very out of left field.
@@meeguelangelo Why should someone be subjected to professional level scrutiny when they’re neither a professional nor claiming to be. It wasn’t a piano masterclass or competition where her playing is to be judged. She’s just a hobbyist playing for fun, rating her compared to professionals and concert pianists in that context is nonsensical. For example, I’m sure you’ve seen videos on youtube of amateurs playing on public pianos where the crowd gathers and watches. Do you think a famous pianist like Kissin or Argerich would watch those clips and begin a technical critique of those players - even worse rate them on a scale compared to concert pianists? No one with any sense of humility would do that. One can enjoy the performance or not, but to give constructive criticism when it’s not the place to do so comes across as arrogant and distasteful.
I find your video very informative, thank you! I did hear/understand the difference between playing the notes and playing phrases. Like many of the other comments, I must be confused on the ranking scale. I’m a beginner, wish I could play like the Princess. So, if she is a 1, then I am less than ZERO.😅 If you haven’t checked out the piece she played at Christmas in front of, idk, 100s of people, do so, then you will be able to give a more accurate assessment. If she does ring you up for a lesson, please post, that would be so exciting! 😀
Good critique. A huge part of performing and learning is listening to critique and applying it. Other musicians have questioned her performance too. I would like to see Cate play live...not prerecorded little snippets...but live. If she is that brilliant then she won't have any problems playing to a live audience.
Why does she even have to prove herself I ask....what is WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE????? SHE CAN PLAY, THAT'S A TICK SHE WAS BRAVE TO DO IT, THATS ANOTHER TICK WHATEVER SHE PLAYED SHE PLAYED WELL....THATS ALL TO IT !! I WANT TO SEE THIS SPEAKER HAVE DUTIES LIKE KATE, A WORKING ROYAL, WORKING MUM, LOVELY WIFE N WHATEVER ELSE SHE HAS TO DO. SEE HOW WELL YOU FAIR.....YOUR OPINION WAS NOT ASKED FOR
If a professional musician is questioning her performance that’s sign of a giant ego and arrogance. Who said she’s brilliant?? She just plays for fun and was probably asked to do this for the fundraiser and in support of Ukraine. No reason to critique her for that.
Grow up people. Your music lessons literally consist of someone sitting beside you critiquing you, correcting you, teaching you. A musician performs and the audience naturally critique you - how many times have you yourselves come out of a concert and talked about the performance? Of course you all have so stop being snowflakes. Performing for charity is irrelevant. End of story.
Dude I admire that you know so much and your friendliness. As a person who tries to be a PERFECT pianist like you, I can really say that you are my idol ❤ hi from Turkey :))
The most important thing is her contribution to the community. She is using her skill to good use and trying her very best to play well for the audience.
I think that to, as well as Annique actually gives a good contribution to her community to learn on what is good and what can be done better, but also to know that it’s a tough road and there are many steps to go work on.

Annique is turning green with envy
You should have watched the entire performance. She appeared and played at least three times throughout the opening sequence.
Princess Catherine's participation for 'For Those Who Can't Be Here' with Tom Walker was longer and there were more snippets of her as well. And she was also using the pedal. I'm not sure though but I think it was recorded live.
She repeated the same 2 notes for the duration of her “performance”.
Green with envy, i would say. Sorry, but you seem to think so highly of your “classical pianist” status. So what?
And your evaluation of her evaluation of the playing is even more ridiculous. She says numerous times throughout the video that certain things are hard to judge because of how short the video clip is, so admitted that she was only going by that clip. She at no point said that this is hardcore fact, and that there is no wiggle room for error. She pointedly said that certain things are hard to judge because of the brevity of the video. Did you miss that?
And she never said that Catherine should work to be a professional pianist or anything of that nature.
@@Mel-jy4kc Hmmm. I didn't "evaluate her evaluation" in a negative light. It was the rating at the end that was unnecessary and unkind.
Like millions of people, she may enjoy playing piano for the sheer JOY of it.🎶
Completely agree with you.

It's easy to understand why Kate may have appeared stiff and not relaxed and too much concentrated on the notes. Imagine the criticism she would have faced if she made a mistake. While I understand she is far from being a classically trained concert pianist, I also think a score of 1/10 is very harsh! Would a 0 be someone who never touched a piano? Low intermediate has to merit at least more than a 1, right? 😅
It's very harsh when an "extra" point was promised early on, implying a score of at least 2 in total.
1 out of 10 is way too harsh. It seems to me she purposely scored her that low for some reason, only she knows
This little narcissist piano opinion ( opinions are like butt holes) every body has one,

Especially when you watch her rate Taylor Swift as a 7....she just lost credibility to me! What a joke.
Wow! One??
@Lewis Levits Why would she be jealous, does she get a pass because she is a princess?

Princess Kate did not claim that she is a professional piano player. She explained this during her accompaniment with Tom Walker.
@@squodge It isn't about money, it's about her priorities and how she chooses to spend her time.
Getting to grade 3 doesn't even take %5 of the efforts to be a concert pianist... So 1 is a fair rating in my opinion.
How do you even agree or disagree with a critic from a classical professional pianist. You’re also an accordion player like wtf
So, if your final mark for her was 1/10, it means the only рoint she got was for the dress 01:30
Indeed! Which is brutally ungenerous and unrealistic - her performance is obviously worth more!
... ok I feel like people are not familiar with German rating systems and thinking. 0-10 are grades. So basically if you have and exam with 100 points, getting a grade 1 means you got 10 points right. And I think it's fair, considering to become a professional pianist there are at least 90 points more needed
🤣 Rating totally unnecessary and quite frankly distasteful!

Very well said! I learned something from you!

She is not a pianist it’s a princess doing something in support of a cause , the critique says more of the TH-camr than the princess
I would rate her early intermediate, so maybe a 3
the difficulty of the songs she played definitely puts her at a 1.she might be better than a 1 though but from what is seen. nothing special to see
@@nicholasng9814A 1 relative to what? The music she is playing is about level 3 or 4 RCM. Just a guess because idk what she’s playing but it’s not level 1 for sure. She’s a late beginner at worst. Not an advanced player obviously but also not complete beginner. Like I said I’d give her a 2 or 3
A 1 ? Why Give her Anything.. She's Stunning ! Fabulous Dress..She Played Like She Knew How..Beautiful Music🎼🎶🎵 I Enjoyed it .Alot...😊💜✝️🙏🌹⚘️
She plays better than most people could.
Shame on making fun of, she is trying to welcome and be part of those that are worthy of their own work.
As long as you’re not judging Putins piano playing you’re save…
Not gonna lie - it would be very cool if you would react to some artists playing the piano from the Eurovision Song Contest this year and previous years and do they actually play if they have a self-playing piano for ex. Estonia 2023.
Why critique someone who isn’t claiming to be professional and is performing in support of Ukraine’s band? 🤷🏻♀️
Video is not critizing the fact that Kate is performing for the Ukraine
@@pjwu2338 Catherine*
Time is a hard, they could’ve employed professional musician and paid them that would’ve been useful. The royal family can be critiqued and their critiquing piano playing and I found these professional paint pianist. I am discussed was incredibly useful wasn’t mean it was helpful and if she watched it, Catherine could improve a piano playing. Sycophantic adoration is really not required as she married into the family. The family are here because they were born. There’s no particular skill in that we’ve all done it
Exactly!
Ukraine is a corrupt money laundering operation
I credit you critique of the piano skills of our future Queen. She may inspire many young people to take an interest in real acoustic music as opposed to electronic. Both have their place.
Both have a place? Electronic is stupid and shallow. More like a desease rather than art.
Yes so true!
Hmm so critical. I don't think she is trying to be concert pianist is she? Seems to me she's just having a little fun and say ing I do this too!
Women are damned if they do, damned if they don’t. I hope Kate inspires children (and maybe even adults) to pick up piano if it’s something they might enjoy.
Firstly she is not proclaiming to be the best piano player in the world and it was a long time since was taught back in school. However, take a look here at another performance she did... the fact you could say you have the future Queen of UK playing Piano in your band video I think goes beyond how perfect she plays but, that she plays at all and not half bad :)
th-cam.com/video/dyXBfAjDj-A/w-d-xo.html
Princess of Wales enjoys playing she is not a concert pianist. And where do you come off critiquing her. Leave it alone, we the majority enjoyed her, and she is a very brave and talented individual too go out before the entire world and display her talent, and love of music..
So your done what ever you have too say, it should be positive, pleasant , and applauded. If not sit down shut up, grow up
Unlike you I’m kind enough to keep my comments to myself
I thought you were kind but felt you could have rated the Princess of Wales higher. We love her so she could play chopsticks and we would still love it. She only played piano as a young teen for a short time, and probably didn't play for years. She showed a great deal of courage to use what casual musical skills she possesses to assist with fundraising for charity, a far greater purpose than playing to impress critics. For her generous gesture alone I rate her performance a 10. She may rate less technically but she accomplished her mission. Your suggestions are noted and perhaps she will contact you to assist her. We're looking forward to her future musicales.
Nice one!
@@ocean_0602 wow Thanks. Appreciate it!
~ Brings to mind the ‘perfect’ posture of Glenn Gould,
…”perfect” In the sense of what *not* to do, even though he pulled it off beautifully.
@@roserouge365 1. Kates video is out there, so people could enjoy it and also learn from it. And Annique kindly took this chance Kate gave to push it to a next level by analysing it and helping even more people, buy giving honest feedback aaand more watchers to the video and more German tax money to Ukraine. So I think this video is a win win win
I realize that the clip of her playing was short, but we barely got to see her playing. Next time show the parts you are commenting on longer. It was hard to see what you were commenting on.
Nice tips! We must share this so you can give lessons in the Palace! 💚
There was a time when criticizing the musicianship of royalty would cost one one's head. 😅
What gives you the right to find fault!!! Its not necessary. She is amazing
Just rude. You have completely missed the whole point of why Princess Kate was playing.
I'm sure Kate will be just OK without your critique.
I was learning to play Polonaise in college and my back and shoulders hurt from the effort.
When I watch Horowitz play it fortissimo in his 80s, I was completely astounded.
Sorry Annique but it's straight to the Tower of London for you! 🤣
Wow harsh critique from a master pianist to a beginner. Probably not going to get any requests for piano lessons from Buckingham Palace after this video.
Wrong. Kate is not you which is why she began as a commoner and became a royal because she was open to learning. THINK about it.
I would hate to see what the fees are for the lessons, if based on ego.
It's not criticism, just constructive criticism. Chill out. I would hate if I felt I did a poor job and everyone tells me that I was magnificent
The Princess of Wales did a fabulous job! She was probably playing to an accompaniment track (to keep all the performers on the beat) and probably was recorded multiple times times for the videographers. This is all more challenging for any amateur. Your rating of 1 is uncalled for and brutal!
Oh, do grow up some of you! 🙄
1/10!! Brutal 😅 but very good advice. Keeping the wrist flexible and initiating phrases with my upper arm has been a game changer
Probably wants a lot of views using Princess Catherine’s very short rendition and delivering the 1/10 rate to sound so professional. Who does that? I’m disappointed. ‘seems the person’s character is starting to show.
@@coleptera180 I see your point but this just shows why numerical ratings can be subjective and ambiguous. Probably best not to use them when critiquing others as everyone will use different factors for their judgments. I think a graceful approach would have been to just say she was a beginner-lower intermediate and leave it at that.
if she got 1/10 and the dress granted her 1 extra plus point ... does it mean that she got a 0/10 ?
This was such a short video of her playing, why don't you check out her Christmas concert 2 years ago.
Are you serious? She’s not a concert pianist…she’s a very diverse, intelligent highly motivated woman and gorgeous to boot. Kudos to her bravery and ambition. Why don’t you just compliment her then put a period at the end. Your intentions are suspect.
JimsPal the critic is probably chained to the piano for hours. Catherine doesn't have that luxury.
Yiiiiiikes. If that 1 is just for the dress and Catherine actually warranted a zero, I would be, like, a -2. Carry on. Us piano plebs will show ourselves out.
It's a PR excercise and Kate is posing for the video and was this about her or you?
I plod slowly because I don't have the scale/keys memorized. So I guess I would be scored at [-100] by you, if she is a 1. 😮
Give the poor princess a break!!! She is under a looking glass constantly - every move, every speech, every dress code is criticized. She did great !
You did a Good analysis.
More important question: which piano was that?
it's a shame more people don't consider physics as being romantic . . . I've always held the contention that proper romance involves the correct application of physics . . . just like in piano performances where it's important to maintain movement, rhythm and timing to develop meaningful phrasing and expression, the flow in romance should be continuous and that there are no interruptions in motion or the use of energy so that the only conclusion is the satisfaction of all parties involved . . . (sigh) does anyone have a spare cigarette?

Exactly, a lot of royal fanatics here
I dont know anything about piano, but I love your videos. I look forward to more like this.
@@melinda395O agree......extremely rude!
Yep, precisely well said!👌🏼
Just a nobody trying to raise & promote herself for open doors into the palace...more like for a commercial advantage & self branding (with her sly crafty unprofessionalism with no respect & honour, no way! No deal for Pretenders like her!)
Just an arrogant jackass Woke thinking she's Lang Lang & she is NOT even on par with any commercial pop pianist like Billy Joel, Harry Connick Jr, Elton John or even young Charlie Puth!
SHE CAN PLAY, THAT'S A TICK
SHE WAS BRAVE TO DO IT, THATS ANOTHER TICK
WHATEVER SHE PLAYED SHE PLAYED WELL....THATS ALL TO IT !!
I WANT TO SEE THIS SPEAKER HAVE DUTIES LIKE KATE, A WORKING ROYAL, WORKING MUM, LOVELY WIFE N WHATEVER ELSE SHE HAS TO DO. SEE HOW WELL YOU FAIR.....YOUR OPINION WAS NOT ASKED FOR
She speaks like shes a professor....
If a professional musician is questioning her performance that’s sign of a giant ego and arrogance. Who said she’s brilliant?? She just plays for fun and was probably asked to do this for the fundraiser and in support of Ukraine. No reason to critique her for that.
Bcoz it was mostly done for Charity show and she was not an expert, just a casual one~~
