  • Proper care of newborn calves is critical for their long term health and survival. Ideally the calf should suckle sufficient quantities of colostrum. If a calf is unable to suckle a bottle, or consume the full amount of colostrum, then a stomach tube should be used.
This is a skilled technique which requires training to ensure the correct placement of the tube.
This technique can also be used to give electrolyte fluid to dehydrated calves and older animals.

Hey there, great looking video thankyou for sharing! Just a quick question though, how on earth were you able to gain access to such awesome natured calves for your demonstrations there? For such young animals, their ability to conquer their strong insict of flight in simular situations is actually quite something to witness. Did you and your video production team have to resort to a great attempt to 'bribe' those calves with extremely desirable treats along the way to achieve that result!
Anyway, whatever the method, great work getting this perfect response from your chosen calves . Your featured stock all
Look to be really quite content, and healthy, a good testimony to your business's ability to care for and manage the welfare of the stock. Certainly a position I'd see as a potential benchmark if I were a farmer myself.
I sincerely wish yourself, and your family, etc the best going forward from here

Why not let the calf suckle it's mother just for the colostrum.

+William Robinson Because quite often, the calf is unable to suckle its mother due to health problems.

      Farmer Benita here,
the reason we do not let the calf suckle is to prevent the calf from getting any diseases from the mother while in the pen with her,
If we remove the calf to a clean environment away from the mother then give the calf the colostrum, the calf will be healthier, and we actually improve the health and well being of the calf and prevent a great deal of sickness, distress, and death, as well, it is easier on the mother as any human mother would know that babies can be exhausting, this gives the best environment for the calf and the cow, and prevents the most harm to both animals.
But yes we love to leave some calfs with the mommy some times cause its so cute and it looks lovely

@@Jax2533 we give the calfs unlimited milk, it increases growth rates and increases farm profits, sorry that we did in the past limit the milk because we thought we were so clever and saving money, then we measured our tiny calves at 3 months old and were like woW they are tiny, so woops, are fault. apologies from canada :)

@@williambeattie8554 Afraid not, calves can suckle easily enough, infact generally health problems dont occur til days 3-5 once the diseases and viruses have time to incubate, much like the covid 19 doesnt show symptoms til 5 days after infection,
however the longer the calf stays in the calving pen with its mother the more viruses and bacteria it can pick up leading to a greater infection
