I see some negative comments about this procedure from people who don't understand why it is done. Most calves who are fed like this are too weak to drink by themselves because of hypothermia, a difficult birth, being abandoned by their mother, or other issues. A calf gets it immune system from these first feedings before the gut closes so it is critical to get milk in a timely manner to avoid long term health problems. This procedure is not fun for the person providing the care or the animal so it is avoided when possible. It is mostly used as emergency care like a human would get at the emergency room or in an ambulance. It is used to get the animal stronger and stable so it can drink from its mother or a bottle.

It’s a diary calf being fed colostrum, it’s not been ‘abandoned’ you daft idiot. And farmers used this a preferred feeding method, not as an emergency procedure.

@@gmail8483 I've seen this method used on sheep, but then it was only used for orphaned and sick lambs. (I used to volunteer on a sheep farm during lambing season)
The man in this video said "Maybe have two stomach tubes on your farm, one for colostrum, and one for treating the sick calf or re-hydrating the calf."
Colostrum is the first milk the mother produces. It's important the calf/lamb/infant receives it. So some farmers tube feed to guarantee the infant receives it.
But on some, seemingly those owned by the people in the comments, this isn't the case. For them, like the sheep farm I volunteered on, the tubing milk is a last resort for infants that have been rejected/orphaned/abandoned and cannot be fed for other methods.
The latter use, for 'treating the sick calf or rehydrating' is only when necessary (I don't think it needs much explanation).
So most mammal infants will only have this used as an emergency procedure - the exception to this being on farms where they choose to tube feed to ensure the calve is properly fed, despite it not being particularly necessary.
Ergo, the OP is not a 'daft idiot'.

@@gmail8483 Calves are ideally able to suck their first milk (colostrum) from their Dam by themselves, soon after birth. This is best for their immune system. I have never spoken to a farmer who stomach tube fed a calf unless absolutely necessary. Including myself.

G Mail You clearly don’t have a clue what you are talking about. I have never seen anyone enjoy feeding a calf like this, we try to avoid it at all costs. It’s not fun for the animal or us especially because it has a risk of drowning the calf. Next time, avoid insulting someone especially because you aren’t as smart as you think you are.

Great video!! my go to. for those of you with the negative comments.. farmers don't tube any animal for fun, its to keep them alive. Do your homework before your negative and stupid comments. Farming is work and calling a vet for every thing isn't an option for all Farmers, this is a simple procedure that every person wanting to keep there animals alive is necessary.

Great tip on checking the tube for damage. Needed to use mine today after yonks. Checked and found a large tooth mark had raised a nasty sharp bit of plastic on the tube. Public holiday so can't get a new one. Those battery operated diamond wheel heel smothers have a thousand uses. Thanks.

Would there be a need to rub a little vegetable oil on the outside of the tube for easier insertion? My poor, sweet calf is severely dehydrated and tries her best to suckle the bottle, but she gets very little. I can't lose her 😢 !! Thank you!

in japan this procedure is used as emergency care. Is using a tube to feed colostrum standard in other countries? I read a book written in English for famers before. it is contained in standard procedure.

A variety of comments here....some from armchair experts. I’d make a few points. Nobody “enjoys” doing this but I can tell you I don’t think twice about doing it. It probably happens at least once a day on our farm during spring calving season to either feed colostrum or feed electrolytes to calves with scour. It is fast, it is efficient and guarantees the right type of milk getting into a newborn belly. A farmer doesn’t always have the luxury of trusting a calf to drink its mother. There are many reasons why it might not drink.

if the calf for a variety of reasons doesn’t drink colostrum on its own, it will not survive. Tube feeding can save its life.

I did the same thing, i lost some. Others perked right up. They’ll die if a guy doesn’t try. When i insert the tube. I listen to see if the calf coughs. If the calf coughs it’s probably gonna gonto the lungs. I have found that if a calf is to weak to cough or lift its head. And is just laying flat about to die. I insert the tube all the way. And then i put my ear to the entrance of the bag and listen for breathing sounds. I also look to see if the tube steams up.
I also add corn syrup to the electrolytes. It’s crucial for getting the calf out of hypoglycaemic shock.
The corn syrup has to have glucose fructose for it to work. I hope this helps. And if I’m wrong i hope someone more knowledgeable can correct me.

Sure, he could’ve highlighted the dangers a bit more. But unfortunately it’s very case dependent, the calf may have been too far gone already, etc. Without a full post it’s impossible to tell exactly what caused the death. Best to try your very best and learn from experience than sit on your hands and hope for a miracle.

I badly need to stomach tube a calf. it's stomach has bloated up and it is writhing on the ground in agony. If i had a tube i could pass it into the stomach and release the gas which in turn would relieve the pressure in the gut and save the calf's life. I have just lost 2 calves who were abandoned by their mothers because of extreme drought i am catching any calves i find and trying to save them. All depends on how starved they are before i find them. If they are too weak and depressed to suck, then without a stomach tube they will slowly die---or i must shoot them. These are the hard facts of life on the land and the hard times we and the animals in our care often go through. My nearest vet is 150km away. I have had to learn to deliver calves and perform many minor surgeries to enable an animal in trouble to recover and indeed to survive. I am now going to buy a stomach tube and learn how to use it. It won't be in time for the poor little calf that's bloated right now, which distresses me greatly, as i now know i could have saved it. I can't just let it die from the bloat either as it is obviously an agonising way to go!

I can only speak for lambs but:
Sometimes this isn't possible. Infants may be abandoned/rejected/orphaned, and so cannot be with their mother. Normally, the response would be to bottle feed them, but sometimes they are too weak or won't take the bottle. This makes tube feeding necessary. I've seen a lamb pulled from the brink of death via this method, although it does seem cruel and scary the first time you experience tubing.
But no matter how painful this is to watch, I imagine watching them starve to death would be a lot more painful.
I hope this helps you! :)
