It's not underrated it's just super difficult. Back in the days everyone rode flatland and when it got more and more difficult a lot of people just started to focus on ramps and street.
@@aikenstodd I still think it's underrated because kids nowadays just wanna see whips and bars in and out of everything. Finally! Some recognition! I was a flatland king here back in the day. Riders today for some reason don’t see how amazing it would be to add flatland tricks into park riding. I’ve been putting these comments on here for a while now but gave up. lol
Getting a couple of tricks done this quickly shows that Matty definitely has a lot of talent. Btw. try grabbing the rear part of the seat instead of the nose of the seat, it makes it a bit easier.
This brought back memories. I'm only 25 now, but the riders that were a little older than me when I was young had adopted the flatland style in large part. We were all manuals and barspins on street ledges and some dirt jumps, but those guys could just blow your mind while passing by on the bike trail. Rural town, no skatepark, and our dirt jumps got torn down on a regular basis no matter where we built them.
Every now and then, on shorts, a old head will pop up and do some flatland tricks. Still amazing. I rode for 20 years and couldn't even do the basics if I wanted to.
As a sponsored surfer and skateboarder (not sponsored) lol I never got into BMX but rode bikes my whole life and mountain biked and so on but this video just makes me smile lol keep up the good work guys 🤙
Matty is a freaking boss. Anybody that can learn those tricks that fast on the wrong freaking bike. If he just got the right bike with a little bit of practice. And maybe practice with somebody who knows how to do that stuff. I would love to see Matty do more. Awesome video
Im diggin the 3 1/2 peg set up matty's got goin on! Combined with the front brake set up, and being LHD, I dont think anyone else in the world has that specific combo
Love the flatland videos 😍 And Matty, if you try to spin in a pegmanual, make sure to keep the bar straight! You spin by leaning the bike in the direction you want to spin. That gives you a lot more stability. Once you got that down, and you feel like you are overrotating in the spin, you can learn gturns/turbines in the spin and that already looks pretty cool when its dialed!
Lol .. that last trick Matty did should be called "The Compass", the math compass. Flatland is really amazing. When I started to look into BMX, that's what my original intention was, to learn some basic flatland stuff .. but Scotty's channel was what I actually came across and was fully inspired by all the street and park stuff. But I do want to try and learn some basic flatland stuff because it looks so cool and super technical. The fundamentals are very versatile and worth in all aspects of BMX freestyle.
Man flatland is the most challenging form of BMX riding. I love flatland, I do truck taps and pull up barspin manuals. I would love to get better at it, but it’s just so difficult. I watch a lot of the Flatmatters online TH-cam channel, there is some crazy riding on there.
I had that ride bmx video. It was great. Edit: thats absolutely incredible he learned that so fast. I tried learning flatland for awhile and couldn't do much of anything but spin manuals on the back pegs
Flatland is in a different league to regular freestyle - takes years to learn the simplest tricks. So much respect for Matty giving them a go and pulling them too :-)
Exercise science guy here; I believe learning to ride a unicycle would be a cheat-code to learning dynamic balance points on the bmx bike flatland tricks. Yes, it's a totally different animal with the full bike, but unicycles are pretty hard to learn how to ride due to balance and core engagement coordination. Approaching 40 here, but flatland seems like a great hobby to keep my balance and coordination honed for my later years.
I've been mesmerized by flatland since I was a kid. When I was able to hit one of the 99 sf dates of xgames and loved seeing flatland live by some pros. Have seen a few people in my area that can do it too.
I dunno if it was last year when Scotty visited a Flatland contest but it was one of the coolest videos on the channel. I think it was in Florida in the back of some bike shop. The riders were super nice guys, too.

Flatland bike geometry 📐 is much different than street BMX bikes. Would love to see you Get a flatland specific bike and have the crew do challenges!!!
Just keep in mind that flat land frames were shorter and the handle bars were lower. For the handle bars you can get a top mount stem and flip it over but make sure the top piece of the stem (which is now on the bottom) clears the top tube. If I remember, I think the flat land frames were 17" or 19" and the wheel base was closer like the chain stay was also shorter.

love that you are trying some flatland on your channel . but don't forget flatland frames are around 2 inches shorter and have zero offset forks so more like 3 inches shorter that then Matty's bike .
Next time you guys are in Huntington Beach, Martin Aparijo and Eddie Fiola ride every single Tuesday, and it's all old school (80's, 90's) flatland. They are incredible teachers too. Matty, try a decade and a cherrypicker next. You can also try a bar endo and a Miami hopper since you have a front brake.
For some reason I've wanted to build a flatland specific bike for years now, ever since buying my Spanish Flybikes flatland frame anyways. Edit:. I've got some other cool flatland tricks y'all can attempt...2:26 learned by accident..If Matty leaned back just a tad taking the weight off the rear end he'd be able to swing it back to himself and then ride away.

Your boy Kenny said you guys were coming to the NJ Flat Jam we just had near the Jackson Skatepark(hockey rink), but ya never showed. Matty, for your 1st attempts, you did amazing. Always said you'd be a good flat candidate if you really wanted it. Trick is to not give up after a few attempts. Sometimes it takes days, weeks, months, to learn a new trick. I'll be at Pine Park tennis courts in Lakewood around noon tomorrow for a brief sesh. Sure you won't stop by, but...hint.😉
Skateboard grip tape on the top of the pegs can help stop toes getting jammed in spokes, keep legs straight and reduce body weight momentum from throeing you off balance.
