Homemade Vertical Wind Turbine From Barrels and Scooter Parts

  • To follow up on my previous DIY wind generator, I'm now building a vertical model with paddle or cup blades and an upright motor. The blades are made from cut-up 15-gallon plastic jugs, and the generator is an old 24v scooter motor. The bearings and pulleys are old wheels and junk I had lying around.
While it's not pretty, it does generate enough power to charge a cell phone! It remains to be seen if it will hold together longer than the last one!

I think you should brace the blades, to avoid losing energy to flex and perhaps delay stress breaking

There could be an issue with there being no space between the reverse facing scoop and the axel. No space for the air to flow past so the off side half works as a sail.

The issue with your v-belt being that loose is that it may be slipping on the smaller driven pulley, costing you some RPMs

I would argue that it's way more cost-effective than solar if you're building it out of garbage it pays for itself pretty damn quick a car alternator from a junkyard is like 15 bucks

Consider to possibly of making your own pirminent magnet alternator. Pericetic drag will be almost zero as there will be no brushes and comunintator. A few silicon diodes will get you dc. The more coils you wind the smoother your DC will be.

    Ah, a true engineer.
And you really should have a tight belt. Loose belts slip all the time, which causes power loss and increased wear and tear. I worked at Sears Parts & Service for a few years, and though I was only a counter person I picked up some technical tidbits like that.

*All practical tests show that small wind turbines hardly generate any electricity. Purchased turbines only at costs very significantly above 1$/kWh!*
There is hardly any wind near the ground, and it is also very gusty, which extremely reduces the service life of the systems.
With solar systems, you can reliably generate electricity for about 7-12 cents/kWh over a period of 25 years!

use a different transmission method. anything but vee belt, its the most inefficient. flat belt, toothed belt, friction wheels, chain... all vastly superior. especially if you actually add any tension as youre supposed to.
was always a fan of the VAWT but then i grew to hate them. i made a savonius out of drums, put much thought into it, always seriously disappointed.
differentials. you only ever get the difference between wind resistance of the two sides.
and they really only make any useful push for about 90-120 degrees of the full rotation anyway...
amusing that a vawt can act as a hawt but a hawt cant act as a vawt...
