This is such a fascinating look into the past! 🍂🍴 Cooking dinner as they would have in 1828 is a great way to step back in time and appreciate the simplicity and resourcefulness of life back then. The fall season must have been full of hearty, comforting meals, made with whatever was in season. It’s incredible to see how much history can be reflected in the food and the way it’s prepared. Such a unique and educational experience! 👏✨
Everything was just as I remembered my great grandmother Melissa making. She passed it on to my grandma Hilda, who taught me. Then I cooked these for my daughter and now we are teaching my grandchildren! I'm so happy that my daughter has embraced the old ways and wants her children to learn as well.❤ And both grandchildren (a girl and a boy) enjoy cooking and learning recipes 😊.

I don't know it but I know that the staff there are super open about just giving you the recipe if you ask them. In fact they usually have printouts of their recipes ready for those who ask. Especially for the permanent dishes on their menu.

I just cannot imagine all the effort it would take to get all the provisions needed to make this simple meal, and how skilled and careful the cook (Justine) has to be not to burn herself or burn the cabin down. the sweet potato balls look amazing- and I think we are going to try the apple tart- very different than anything I have ever had - and we have a million apples and sweet potatoes always looking for interesting recipes from the past (collect cookbooks from the 1920's thru the 1970's) because we went back to good natural foods and they have the best recipes- love your channels- and btw you look like you are feeling better- so glad

Justine, the meal looked so delicious! I like to cook my pork in some apple juice or watered down apple cider. The liquid flavors the meat and the pork flavors the juice, then I use that liquid to make my pork gravy, using flour and butter rue. I had similar sweet potato balls last Thanksgiving, only they were formed around a large marshmallow…oh, and baked, not fried……rolled in corn flakes, omg…..sssssoooooo good. Secret spice they used was pumpkin pie spice. I started watching the chew & chat…about 5 minutes in, I said to myself, I need to watch Justine make it first……so, here I am…..now to the chew & chat again.
Don't ever let butter make you feel guilty. The sweet potato balls look like something that should be made again and put in food trucks or something. Delicious!
Great channel. Love the hearth. I'm certain that it could be physically taxing and at times hazardous as you have an open fire, heavy pots and water had to be transported if you didn't have a well or nearby source of water.

The cat says, I don't get enough attention, put me outside ha ha. I always wonder how difficult it was to clean the bowls back then. I know not everyone had a close water source and wells weren't 100 percent dependent. Amazing looking supper.

Meat and animal fat had been the basis of the proper human diet for millennia until we started processing grains and other plants to feed the masses more cheaply. You should never feel guilty about butter, lard, red meat, or anything that is natural. I have lost 100 lbs eating a high-animal fat, low-carb diet and all of my labs are stellar. Carbohydrates are the problem, and doctors are SLOWLY catching up. Our ancestors knew what to eat without anyone telling them, and most chronic diseases were extremely rare until the last 70-80 years; we should go back to what is natural. #properhumandiet
