    This is such a well-done video, thanks Belen! 😊 I have two small hygiene tips to add - they are applicable to all.
    1. Instead of wet wipes, you can use an 'exfoliating glove' to remove grit and grime from your body. The rough texture of the glove works incredibly effectively, it's zero waste, and in places where water is scarce, just a few millilitres of water is enough to feel fresh and clean.
    2. Keep your armpit hair super short to reduce body odour (you can use scissors or a beard trimmer). The reason is that the more hair you have, the more surface area bacteria* has to cling to. When I do this, the difference in my overall smelliness is huge (and I can get away with cleaning my clothes less 😅).
    *Bacteria break down the long-chain fatty acids, amino acids and hormones that are present in sweat. This creates smaller and more volatile chemicals that make your armpits smell. Sorry, couldn't help but give a science lesson. 🤓

      Thanks Alee!
      Love the tips, especially the glove one! I do own one "at home" but I'll definitely bring it over on the next trip. On dusty days, especially, my legs need a deep scrub, hahaha. Hope you are going well!

    Deodorant suggestion: carry a small piece of silver, a small spoon, or coin or pill-box. Wipe with that. Silver kills the bacteria which cause the smell by degrading the pheromones. It will be enough to last several lifetimes!

    I'm pretty happy with using cotton washcloths instead of wet wipes, just pour a bit of water from your bottles on them. I think they can reduce waste even a bit more.
    Why wouldn't you ever bury toilet paper in the hole? I feel like the worst tourist trace is visible paper on the ground, but as long as it's hidden it shouldn't be a big deal to take some years to decompose, no?

    • @BelleToscan
      @BelleToscan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Felix! It’s easier to say ‘don’t do it’ to avoid people doing it wrongly (like not digging deep enough). As far as I know, the paper will decompose relatively fast if the soil is humid. We travel a lot in arid areas and also in places were the toilet paper is made of questionable materials so we prefer to bring the paper back with us and trash it later on in a bin. And hey! Thanks for the tip on the cotton washcloth!

    Do you like to wear merino wool? I find it is the best for everything climate except hot (>30c) and humid conditions. However, it is not as durable and elastic as Lycra. What is your preference? I find it doesn’t need to be washed as often.

      I've never used merino underwear, only for my "pijamas". I've been trying not to wear underwear lately but... It's kinda hard when you can't wash your pants or shorts daily.

    Using wet wipes is not ecologically sustainable at all, not sensible and not necessary. With a container and max. 0.5l of water in it, a soap such as 'Dr. Bronner' 2 people can wash themselves well. We are often on the road for many days without showering. For us, harmony with nature is very important. And because we love nature and like to move around in it, it is very important to us to leave as small an ecological footprint as possible, if any at all.

    • @BelleToscan
      @BelleToscan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was traveling with an empty 1.5 or 2 liter plastic bottle. When there was no possibility of a shower but access to water, I would fill the bottle up and take "bottle baths”. Incredible that with 1.5 liters I could even wash my hair… we really spend a lot of water in the comfort of our homes.
    During menstruation this bottle also helped me to carry more water (maybe a liter) and the option of using another bottle that was not the same as the one I use to drink water, so I could clean my menstrual cup (and myself) in the middle of any route without having to look for a bathroom. For me it was a very nice experience to be able to drop my blood directly on the ground. It felt much nicer and more hygienic than doing all this in a bathroom.
    Thank you very much for making this video and for opening the space for all of us to share our experience

      Thanks for sharing, Isaura! The menstrual cup is indeed a game-changer. This summer we'll be riding in a country were water is not an issue, so I'm excited to let go a little and enjoy that advantage.

    This is direct honest information that EVERYONE needs! Thanks so much for sharing it Belén! As a menstrual supporting male (I washed my wife's cotton pads for years, bought a Thermaphore, and sourced Diva cups. We also used sympto thermo/ combined with condom birth control, so she shared every aspect of her cycles with me) this resonates! I will be sharing this with all my cycling friends, especially the women. Thank you for being willing to go where so few have been brave enough to go! Deep thanks and respect to you and to all who have chimed in with such valuable tips!

    Hello Belén, thank you for sharing your experience. I also use a menstrual cup on our bike trip. For changing and cleaning the cup in nature I use a shovel and grave a hole where I can empty the cup (best far away from the tent, so there are no animals attracted). With a mobile bidet or a sports drinking bottle, I can wash myself and the cup. I use the lily cup compact. It is foldable and has a very pleasant material.
    In addition, I started carry period underwear. They are from merino wool and other good materials. So I feel safe at night in the tent. Initially, that was always complicated while wildcamping because you are often going to bed/tent early and get up late. With the period underwear I have a safe feeling and I am no longer afraid of a mess. Even when cycling, I feel the period underwear in the stronger days very comfortable to wear. However, I do not need any additional padded pants at all.
    And if i'm uncomfortable outside during the time i'm bleeding, we'll take an accomodation if possible.
    For Deodorant:
    I make my own deodorant for the bike trip. I melt a bit of coconut oil (e.g. 40g and then add 3g - 10g baking soda/natron - depending on how much you sweat or how strong the smell of sweat is) - in a cold water bath I let the oil solidify again while stirring and fill it in a handy little bottle. Should be kept leak-proof as it can become a little more liquid in the summer. but then just baking soda as a powder under the freshly washed armpits is enough. dry and done. lasts a long time and is very strong.
    Thanks for the exchange. I've learned a few new things.
    Greetings Moni

    I have a tip to avoid using toilet paper: a bidet. You can make one and use with any bottle of water. Just take a lid and make a hole on the side. When you need to "go", put the lid with the hole on your water bottle. You squeeze the bottle to get a jet of water to clean your body where necessary. Of course, do it where you've made the hole, so whatever dirt you've washed with the bidet, it goes in the hole before you cover it. If you do use paper, then the paper will be just to dry your skin after the bidet, not to actually clean you from dirt. Less paper and less dirt to carry around in your pack. You can also forget paper altogether and just use a small piece of microfiber elected to be your pee rag. The aim isn't to clean yourself with it, since the bidet does the cleaning. It's just to dry you after the bidet. I don't carry toilet paper when I go for multiday hikes. I use the bidet and the "pee" rag.
    Another tip: no wet wipes! It's bad for the environment. Have a small piece of microfiber. Put a little water on it and clean yourself with it. Careful not to mix this one with your "pee" rag. I use two pieces of microfiber about the size of my hand.
    Periods: if your trip is only lasting a couple of months, you can as well take the pill without interruption to avoid having a period during the trip.

    • @BelleToscan
      @BelleToscan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Love the bidet suggestion! It somehow reminds me of the Japanese toilet concept. We are currently in Baja California with no drop of water to spare but I'll definitely implement this in future trips were water is not an issue.
      To avoid wet wipes, I also use a wet(ish) towel but it doesn't last long since we are always super dusty and the towel get so so filthy after a couple of wipes.
      So much room for improvement!

    Hi Belen! Thanks for the video! I have an amazingly simple solution for a deodorant: just boil water (70ml), let it cool down and put 1 tsp of backing Natron inside. Stir a while and put it in a refillable spray. That’s it! It works 100%, you can put it on clothes and skin and you will never smell anything again 😊

      @@BelleToscan curious how it works, please let me know 😍! Also if your skin is too sensitive for this, there is a German brand called Wolkenseife and they make deo Cremes. They work with a similar principle and smell is gone for sure. But on tour with the different temperatures the cream either freezes or gets too liquid when it’s hot. Therefore the spray comes in handy while out riding. But, in case you your skin doesn’t like the spray, the cream is worth trying 😉

    • @BelleToscan
      @BelleToscan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it can. I mean, you can keep the pants unwashed too but since you sweat on them it can become a playground for bacteria. You also have to make sure you’ll be able to dry them properly. Many people that don’t use underwear travel with two pairs of chamois to make sure they can wash/dry.

      Thanks a lot for the kind words. And yeah... They are tricky subjects but the best way is to deal them in the most natural way. Usually, on tour, your body understands the environment and can wait a little longer until you arrive in the right spot. And the period... I always think... "it's gonna happen anyways, so I might as well just keep on doing what I'd like and ignore the fact that I'm bleeding". Ibuprofen definitely helps, hahaha. =)
