Once you’ve added a new video track, both will be in your workspace, only one will be behind the other. You then have to use the crop tool and the resizing feature under the fx tab to fit both (or more) on the screen.
@@samvanderwoude2258 As a life long musician I'm impressed. You did an awesome job with this, and I listened a few times. BTW how long did it take for you to out all this together from beginning to end?
When I see multi-track recordings like this, (especially on this scale), I always wonder how it's all done. What order did you record it all in? Where do you start? How do you play in tempo with yourself? Seriously, this is very impressive and inspiring! Keep it up!
Might you care to say a little more about your mics and the space? SDC, perhaps? omni or directional? What configuration and distance? What manufacture and model? The space sounds good... Or did you add a tasteful amount of reverb in post to give some "life"? (So easy tempting to go overboard with verb.) Fantastic job. Thank you.
My band director showed us this video and said “this kid can play all the instruments in the band and sound good. Y’all can barely sound good on one.”. My band director is hard to please, well done.
Sasha Arteaga He sets high standards. Personally, I practice more because his criticism is my motivator. I feel bad for people who have a hard time seeing it that way.

Jakallslsos Asdghjkl, I play french horn, but I have to borrow from the school district’s resource centre. My horn came in two months late, so I picked up trombone. I decided that low brass sounds amazing and it makes me all giddy inside because I can shake the floor and people’s eardrums when I blast, so I’m going to learn tuba when I start highschool (I’m in eight grade right now.) My band teacher has been talking to the highschool band director about it, and since he’s always running low on all three instruments, he’s agreed to let me continue learning all of them and alternate between them depending on which we need. I’ve tried the tuba and it hurts to play, so conclusion: this kid is a living brass god, I envy his ability.
I can’t believe the 21 folks that “thumbs down” this video. I can’t imagine how hard this was to put together. Why not appreciate and celebrate the hard work and good performance on so many instruments?? It’s ok to be encouraging and supportive. That is allowed!
And especially when the intonation and ensemble really is quite fine. I know a conservatory graduate who makes similar videos (on a much smaller scale) that are not quite up to this standard!
As in the guy with all the solos and small ensembles in the entire blue coats show that brought me into marching band? THE same Ben gunnarson that we were shown the head cam for that showed me how fun marching is?
I've done a lot of multitrack recording of pieces like this, so I'm familiar with all the behind the scenes work involved in putting something like this together, which leaves me even more awestruck at how incredible your work is in this video. It's also impressive at how good of a tone you have on so many instruments that are certainly not your primary instrument. Incredible work!
I once had a music teacher who had worked as a music teacher in a tiny Norwegian hamlet. He had to teach all the instruments. He said flute was hardest because he had no experience with that, and had to stay two weeks ahead of his students. Sounds like a job opening for you.
What a job! I am so impressed not only with your production (which in and of itself is an "instrument" that has to be learned, both audio and video recording and editing) but your tone on each instrument is amazing. You managed to fully invest in capturing each instrument's characteristic sound, a feat that is not easily accomplished. You also studied the intonation tendencies of each and played to maximize to your strengths and it shows. Bravo!
"What instruments do you play?" "Better ask what instruments I don't play." Great work, man. What instrument did you begin with, and what's your favourite? Also, where do you get so many instruments? :D
I've been playing the saxophone for the longest, but the three trombone parts were the first to be recorded in this video. I thoroughly enjoy playing mid range brass, but the bassoon is another favourite of mine! And I borrowed many of the instruments from a high school.
@@Apfelstrudl I agree with the trumpet. The trumpet didn't sound as brilliant as one knows it. But listen to the horn part on 8:08. For me as a horn player, it sounded very good considering that he doesn't play too much horn.
This blows my mind. I never would have believed it possible for one person to play all of those instruments--and well! Seriously, I'm amazed that one person can play the tuba AND the piccolo, and everything in between. You are amazing! Oh, and by the way, the performance is beautiful.
You’re going to be a scary band director someday. If anyone does anything wrong, on ANY instrument, you’ll be able to grab it and demonstrate exactly how to play it. They’ll be in awe and afraid to try to get away with anything! Brilliant!
Spectacular work. Very few people will understand the enormous investment in time and effort to become fluent on all of these instruments. Beyond that, the time, effort, and dedication needed to see this project through to the end just boggles me. This would have taken a small eternity to do even if you played all the tracks perfectly on the first take. Side note: If you did nail all of these on the first take, don't you DARE let us know. Some of us will sell our horns and work at the donut shop for the rest of our lives. I'll admit, I only made it about 20 seconds before jumping to the very end to see if you did the piccolo and tuba duet all by yourself. I swore about that for a little bit, then restarted. Kudos for having solid time and rhythm, and holding it together through all the tracks. Double kudos for playing as IN TUNE as you did on all these different instruments. Effort, attention to detail, execution, and follow-through. Beats the $#!+ out of talent 10 times out of 10. Great job!
I just sat for the entire twelve minutes and listened without even considering clicking away, checking my phone, or reading the comments... which might be sad to say but is pretty rare for me :P Still my all time favourite song we ever played in high school band and now I have a go-to track to listen to! I still regularly get March and Song of the Blacksmith stuck in my head and find myself humming them
Dude, first off, bravo! As a band director, that was freaking awesome. That's one of my favorite pieces and you did it great justice. LOVED listening to it. Second, you sounded phenomenal on just about every instrument. I don't know if it's just because I'm principally a trumpet player, but trumpet was like the only one I could critique your playing to any degree. Awesome video man. Hope you continue doing awesome stuff like this! Go music!
You probably hear it more because you are a trumpet player, but you are correct: trumpet is probably my weakest instrument. Also, the second suite has a relatively difficult trumpet line that is quite exposed, and it was right at the limit of my trumpet ability.
Very well done, Sam! Looking forward to the First Suite in E-flat, and/or the RVW English Folk Song Suite if you feel the urge to continue with projects like these. Inspiring work!!!
Bravo, Sam!! Many of us, from within the professional Music World who have just seen this, are sincerely hoping you will continue to put some magnificent performance videos/recordings out, in the future. Excellent! Thanks for creating a smaller matrix of video views when some instruments aren't playing. Visualizing a musical work in this way helps the listener/viewer appreciate the way the composer uses musical textures.
I always thought about doing my own wind quintet, but this. This is on a whole other level. You even played the oboe and piccolo parts really well, and though you seem to mainly play woodwinds your brass playing is really good!
That was simply, awesome. I wish I could do that. I played this in high school 35 years ago. We never sounded this good. Your song of the blacksmith was super tight. The triplets and syncopation were perfect .
One of my favorite band pieces, and I can't begin to fathom the technology, nor the amount of work it took for you to record all the instruments yourself!! Well done!!!
Congratulations! You are amazing! I’ve never seen somebody who plays all instruments so well. All together with organizing, practicing, recording and editing, I am musician myself and I know what it takes to learn even one instrument. Good luck for your future!

When I was in high school I played all the woodwinds and trumpet (and eventually because a professional bassoonist). I sometimes would make recordings where I used multiple cassette tape players and recorded tracks playing different parts myself. I remember the days before TH-cam and all this neat editing technology, and what I would've given for it as a youngster--video tutorials available to learn to play other instruments that I had trouble with (low brass--yikes), and a more rewarding way of putting them together. This must've taken a tremendous amount of work. What a neat project, and very fun to see and hear. The "Keep Calm and Play Saxophone" shirt being worn while playing the trumpet is a nice touch.
