The truck bed came out great! I bought 14 reclaimed 2 x 8 southern yellow pine boards at a junk lumber store for $38. Powder coated the same strips white and polished sstl hardware kit. Filled the nail holes with clear epoxy and then hit the milled boards with some spar varnish from Lowes. It has been in my 62 (avatar) for 7 or more years now.
I just got myself a 1983 stepside and definitely needed to see this video. Seeing it was posted 2 days after i got my truck, i am glad i stumbled upon your channel. I was searching how to bag a square body c10 and watched those videos. then i seen this one. i'll be doing mine as soon as possible. the piece of plywood and twin bed slats were good enough to take out the trash, but it'll start warping soon.
I want to start working on the interior. Probably window rubbers and assembly rebuilds. Maybe I can get you guys to help align the doors so the open and close easier
why didn't you show installing the rest of the wood and strips? I've got a metal bed in my 83 step side that needs to come out. Same exact bed. I've contemplated doing marine plywood with marine form over it for something different. Anything would be better than what's in there now.
Good-n-tight! But seriously we go through and snug all the bolts up, then wait about 4 weeks for the wood to settle and acclimate then snug all bolts clamping to the wood.
What would’ve been kick ass for that color and patina of the truck, if you would’ve done a cold blue on the floor runs. I ain’t saying to use the old bone meal method of bluing, which the colors are phenomenal. Any type of hard case bluing that would have a warped color to it would’ve been sweet.
looks great, if you really wanted a pho-tina, you could take the bed strips, carrage bolts and submerge them in vinegar for 24 hours. that will strip any galvinazation/zinc off em. then dust em with paint (like long distance, your looking for hint a color being there, then lightly sand the high points) then spray em with a mixture of 16 ounces of Hydrogen Peroxide, 2 ounces of vinegar and a tablespoon of salt. mist em a few times a day for 2-3 days before assembly. that will rust em up.
I have a 1966 C10 Fleetside long bed that I'd like to restore to its former glory. Unfortunately, there is no bed board or rails left. Your video shows some light to my restoration of my truck, but I have questions about the thickness of the bed boards. I'm told 3/4" is the minimum. What do you suggest?
Can you guys link the bed strips? And also, do you know how many boards I'd need for a 71 long box fleet side? I assume it's just all 8 foot boards except for the ones that have to be cut for the wheel tubs
@@Sryofcrv1 I don't have the link but it was a pretty easy search on LMC truck. Not sure exactly how many boards it will take, you should be able to measure the width of the bed and divided by the width of the boards you would like to use.
@@BestDamnShopAround awesome thanks man, your videos are super helpful. Also makes me a bit jealous because I realize just how many more tools I need to buy..haha
Right on time! My bed wood kit just got delivered today. Looking forward to some tips.
Fresh bed wood makes a big difference!
I am about to install my wood bed and you give out some great ideas. Thanks fella
You're welcome! Good luck with the project!
Great job. Turned out really nice.
Thank you for the support!
I love it! I dunno why, like you said the first thing I look at on these trucks is the bed😆
Thank you! Glad to know it's not just me haha

Very cool!
I think the cedar looks killer. Now it needs a custom fab'd cooler mount for a vintage-ish igloo or Coleman cooler with a BDSA logo on it.
Absolutely!
Cedar looks fabulous & that is called... rough saw... smothe 1 side & rough on tha other side
Thank you!
Thanks for this videos man it’s really a nice makeover now I got the idea of how to do my 53 Apache
Thank you! I love a 53!
Thanks for the great video! Definitely something I’ll watch again when we do the bed on our 66 C/20.
Glad we could help! A 66 c/20 is a beautiful truck! 2wd or 4wd?

Wood beds are the best beds. Clean look, cost effective. Great information!

great video! Just getting ready to do the bed in my patina 62 Chevy and liked your treatment of the metal strips and wood choice!

One thing about using oil is you can go back once a year and reoil it to keep it fresh

“We like less people”. Hilarious. I agree 100 percent
😂😂
Awesome video!! Going this route on my truck. It was hard to watch you cut the first board though.
Thank you! Definitely not a carpenter but I'm learning! Haha
Should have had a bed to frame ground wire to disconnect as well, if you didn't you might want to add one.

Torch the boards works well also!!
Good idea!
Torched boards, with oil, find some steel (not stainless) floor runs and put a nice cold bluing and make the color look warped like an old Winchester!
good vid so grooves for the strips are sorta optional I take it.
Exactly! Thank you!
Are the strips sitting on top of each board or are they completely in between the boards?
@@raulloredo1628 The strips are sitting approximately 1/4 in over the edge of each board they divide, and the bolts go between boards.

It should!
How did you channel the bedstrips in what depth
We didn't channel the best trips in this one

1in if I remember correctly!
You didn’t have to route the edges to create a groove of the wood for the strips to fit snug

Which strips did you use.. gonna try on my longbed
