As a Higgins owner, this turned out to be bliss. As a football watcher, it made me want to pull my hair out. You can’t convince me that these games aren’t manipulated
You know it is bad when a European, following his first NFL season ever, was screaming at the screen in disbelief how Bengals are not following the most obvious path to a win.
I mean, that is the thing. This isn't madden. The players aren't machines. And working the clock and making "every right move" can actually make it harder for your offense to operate. Ultimately you might be increasing your odds of losing. And never assume any field goal is a sure thing. Watch the game if you don't know that.
I hate Zach Taylor with all my heart, and he was god awful this whole game. But the only thing I disagree with people on was getting that td. Our backup kicker is straight balls this season and can’t be relied on for anything (look at what he did in OT in this exact game), and our defense can’t be trusted not to let up a touchdown with even just 40 seconds left in the game. A touchdown, in my opinion, was necessary with our kicker and defense. We never should’ve even gotten to that point, and Zach should’ve managed the clock properly before, but once we were in that specific situation I think a touchdown was the only way to victory
@Isaac-jl6hq But if you played the clock correctly by kneeling on 1st-3rd down, the Broncos have 10 seconds at most left from their 30 with no timeouts. If York can't convert from inside 30 yds you don't deserve to win anyway.
A dedicated clock manager is a fantastic idea! Teams already have data analysts using analytics to determine the best plays or whether to go for it on 4th down. Why not add another specialist to the staff?
The problem is: will the HC listen to the time manager? If the HC already cant figure out the logic in real-time, are they going to listen to someone telling them to do the opposite of what their instincts tell them?
I get that Taylor doesn’t get it but Sean Payton regarded as an all time coach and did that in ot is embarrassing. Then the Denver punter with just awful punts at end of 4th and ot. Cincinnati had no timeouts smh
It's actually worse. Payton actually said the reason they went for the extra point to tie was because either a win or a tie would get them in. Which means he knew he could play for a tie in OT and didn't wtf.
how did he not play for a tie? It was 3rd and 9 with 2:33 remaining. They chose to pass. If they pick up the first they would’ve just took a knee 3 times
Well, to be fair the announcers said that York had no trouble hitting in pregame and he did hit a 22 yard field goal with ease. And, York's miss was later on in the game.
This was 15 yds closer than the kick that was missed...and York just doinked it, meaning the kick he missed would have went in from a couple yards closer.
40 to 50 seconds is plenty of time for any team to get in field goal range against the bengals defense. They were going to run it down to kick a field goal but had to use a timeout for brown's injury and knew with that defense you cannot leave that drive only getting 3 points
I know the first few plays was awful time management for the bengals but what people don’t understand with the bengals is just how bad the bengals defense can be, with 40 seconds left in the game I wouldn’t be surprised if the broncos kicked a field goal or honestly even scored a touchdown
The kick could've been blocked (already something that happened several times this season), or York could've missed it (considering he missed a 33-yd fg later in this game), and if one of those things happened, Zac Taylor would've been grilled for not taking the points for the touchdown. The reason Denver got to OT was entirely on the defense, it's not the coach's fault for wanting an easy 7-point lead instead of gambling on a high pressure kick imo.
Another reason why Taylor probably didn't decide to run the clock down is because Cade York isn't as automatic and reliable as Aubrey or Butker. If the Bengals had McPherson the game plan might've been different.
@@ribbit1806if you're that close in fg range and cant trust your kicker to make it, you've got MUCH bigger issues. This is bad time management, plain and simple.
@@IRanOutOfPhrases as I said before, the kicker is a backup, and we've seen a lot of blocked kicks this season. Who knows what would've happened if they stalled the clock.
After the Brown injury, it was actually a wash scenario for the Bengals. You either kick a chip shot FG with 50 seconds left or score a TD with 1:30. It was actually the right move for the Bengals to try to score a TD on 2nd down because you still need to score in that scenario to win the game. The best thing obviously would've been to not score on 2nd down and score on 3rd down, but you can't try to control the game like that because weird things can happen. Basically, it's a tradeoff because either the Broncos need to cover less field and kick a FG or need to score a TD but have more time to do it. The mistake was definitely not icing the game before the Brown injury, but considering what happened in OT it was maybe for the better the Bengals didn't rely on their kicker to win the game LOL.
I also think back to the Jets/Dolphins game from a few weeks ago when it comes to this topic. I think that if the Bengals had lost this game, that this would be a fireable offense.
3:08 a touchdown with 1:30 + timeout is worse than a field goal and 0:50? Broncos had 2 touchdowns all game, what are the odds for them to get another one the next drive?
The bengals first game against the ravens was also atrocious. The bengals were up by 10 with 3 minutes left in ravens territory and ran the ball maybe 30% of the time
Clearly haven't watched much Bengals football, this was par for the course with a lucky outcome. Coach ZT felt like he needed a TD to keep the game in their hands and it was the right call in the end. There's a lot of trust in the offense, not so much the defense. The real clock mismanagement here is the Broncos in OT. With around 2:40 on the clock against one of the worst run defenses in the league, they chose to throw 3 times and only waste 10 seconds, giving the Bengals enough time to come back and score the winning TD the following drive. They just needed time to run out to get the tie to clinch and they couldn't even do it.
I do not disagree with the Bengals going for the TD once the injury on first down to Brown allowed the Broncos to keep their timeout. What I STRONGLY disagree with is the first down hand-off rather than just taking a knee. You MUST make Denver use their last timeout after FIRST down!!
Sean Peyton also screws up badly in the week before vs the Chargers just before the half. Harbaugh outcoached Peyton in calling for a timeout, forcing the Broncos to punt and getting a free kick out of it which turned the whole game. Broncos should have used up their time and not given the ball back to the Chargers. They could have clinched a playoff berth 2 weeks ago.
I was so mad that the Broncos a) didn't go for 2 at the end of regulation, and b) then failed to convert the 3rd and 9 in overtime to then be able to kneel out a tie, because if they had done either of those things, then Zach Taylor would have been fired and deservedly so. this was coaching malpractice of the highest order, I genuinely couldn't believe what he was doing
The crazy thing is clock managment isnt just a 4th quarter thing. It should be done the entire game. If your up even 1 score in the 1st quarter you should be running the clock down. Statistically speaking it helps your chances to win.
The bengals have lost to many games this year trying to do traditional clock management. They can’t run the ball in a 4 minute offense. They have to pass the ball to close out games.
The mistake was Brown going out of bounds. That was it. Kicking a FG and leaving 40 seconds on the game clock gives them a better chance of tying than getting the TD and leaving 80 seconds. The Brown injury changed the strategy as it should.
Kind of tuff to manage the game (including the clock) and also call offensive plays. Head coaches need to stay away from calling plays and do the job their paid to do.
Younger QB's and head coaches are so used to somebody telling them thru the headsets what to do. They have no experience in real-time decisions. Kinda like a lot of young airlihe pilots who relie on technology but really don't know how to "fly" the plane.
Again last night poor clock management by the Falcons possibly cost them the game in regulation. They had 2 timeouts and let the clock run down to 17 seconds before snapping the ball.
@@ejhanselman The scenario I described is when the team with the lead is on offense and the defense is trying to stop the clock. If the defense calls a timeout with 2:04 for example, then the offense can call a passing play because there is no repercussion for an incompletion since the clock will stop at the end of the play regardless. If you don’t call the timeout and let it go to the 2 minute warning, then there is a repercussion for an incomplete pass as it will save the defense a timeout.
@bilba5406 The other option would be to use your timeouts on defense around the 2:30 mark. That way the offense is also more likely to run the ball rather than possibly giving you a free timeout with an incomplete pass.
You didn't even mention that on 1st and goal the best play for the Broncos was to let the Bengals score, but the play by the offense was so bad that on 2nd and goal they have a better chance at winning by actually playing defense again. Of course there is no way to know that your running back is gonna get hurt and you're gonna have an injury timeout, but come on, just take three knees and kick the field goal.
The whole problem with this analysis is that Cinci's kicker is Cade York. There is no such thing as chip shot field goal with him. He has a million dollar leg and 1 dollar brain. In case you were not aware, in OT, York missed a "chip shot" FG to win it. In most cases, this analysis is spot on. Not here, however. York has been with multiple teams, mainly because the big moment is just too big for him.
I'm still beyond pissed the broncos didn't go for two. They've been vastly outplayed all game. You have a chance in one play to steal a game. Verses going into overtime on the road against a team thats played way better than you. Not going for two days to make sense at all then and especially now
The outcome of the game is honestly what shapes the media narrative more than anything. A mistake exactly like this (if not honestly more minor consider what's at stake for the Bengals right now) cost Matt Eberflus his job while Zac Taylor is probably getting praised for leading his team to a win as though they won because of and not in spite of his horrendous management of the match. That one baffled me so much because in that same game he did a pretty savvy thing by waiting to challenge the outcome of a play until the last second because he was waiting to see whether the Bengals would try to run a play or not and only through the challenge flag once he would have been willing to give up a timeout anyway, essentially making it irrelevant how the challenge turns out. Call is overturned? Great. You lose a timeout? Fine, you'd have taken one anyways. @@trwent sry, I used voice input there, usually it's pretty good when I pause typing to use my hands for something else for a moment but that one got messed up I guess, lmao
The really bad mistake by the Bengals was handing the ball off on FIRST down. After that, due to the Broncos not having to use their lone remaining timeout after first down due to the injury, the Bengals were kind of in no man's land. Take two knees and kick FG, then there would still be 50 seconds or so for Broncos to come back and tie with FG or win with TD. Score the TD as they did, and Broncos have a lot more time, but then they need a TD, FG is worthless. The FIRST down call is where the Bengals really messed up.
Denver's redzone defence was giving them trouble all night. They didnt have the luxury of burning time, they needed to give every down the best chance to succeed

It looks like Sean McVay`s stock went up just knowing clock management. Didn't the Lions do some stuff like this too? and everyone knows about the Bears clock management problems.
I agreed with you until you said not to go for the TD. A FG lead isn't as formidable. Especially with touch backs going to the 30 and a kicker like Lutz on the other side.
anyone who played madden could probably manage the clock better than nfl teams do and that's when you realize they're not always trying to win just follow the script from vegas etc.
I know the Pro Bowl is not the most exciting thing. But it seems like a matter of time before the Madden gaming community comes in and has some influence.
People thinking these games are rigged for how they mismanaged the clock. No that just how bad Zac Taylor is, he’s been doing stuff like this for years and Burrow is bailing him out. There are really only like 6 coaches that understand clock management, i.e. Andy Reid that’s why they win so many games.
That's a load of malarkey. A competent coaching staff could address the issue after a few mistakes with a particular aspect. After years go by with the same solvable issue perpetuating, it's clear as day we're being duped.
Hey, I've had a theory about this for many years. The theory is that deciding how to manage the game at the sidelines hinders critical thinking vs watching in the comfort and quietness of a home.
Coaches pick the correct plays and bench the right players in critical moments, there is no reason why there isn’t a “clock management expert” on every team telling coaches the optimal decisions in key moments, even then this shouldn’t be necessary because a coach should know a qb sneak on 2nd down just doesn’t make any sense

Completely dumb clock management. Costed me in fantasy.
Atlanta was horrible.
the annoucers literally have better clock management, they usually tell us what should happen
EXPLOIT THE CFL CLOCK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM! Play in bounds stop the clock and then restarts also regulation DOSEN’T end when the clock hits zeros. Also let coaches CHALLENGE after the 2 minute warning. We NEED CFL to FIX American Football.
It typical Zack Taylor, he sucks as a head coach and has lost the Bengals at least 3 games this season.
nothing is a chip shot for cade york...
It looks like Sean McVay`s stock went up just knowing clock management. Didn't the Lions do some stuff like this too? and everyone knows about the Bears clock management problems.
Denver should have went for two cuz KC already had the number 1 seed before this game.
SpruceGoose, you might have a really good idea. Think about this. Letting the best Madden players coach the Pro Bowl.
I agreed with you until you said not to go for the TD. A FG lead isn't as formidable. Especially with touch backs going to the 30 and a kicker like Lutz on the other side.
Like most Head Coaches and Selfish Madden Players
*F#$% the 3 Points, I want a TD*
Also we're gonna need more NFL Takes like this.
you don't even need a logician to figure this stuff out. it's toddler level. how on earth professionals can't see it is just astounding.
anyone who played madden could probably manage the clock better than nfl teams do and that's when you realize they're not always trying to win just follow the script from vegas etc.
I know the Pro Bowl is not the most exciting thing. But it seems like a matter of time before the Madden gaming community comes in and has some influence.
I swear a lot of these coaches are just a bunch of grifters.

Don't tell me there's no such thing as black retreads
so true
You should do more of these videos
When it comes to clock management, da bears take the cake on this subject.
No clue why you don’t run on 1st and 2nd down
People thinking these games are rigged for how they mismanaged the clock.
After years go by with the same solvable issue perpetuating, it's clear as day we're being duped.
the 1st play was the players fault a screen isnt a bad way to run down the clock he just shouldnt have went out
Just like the lions and bears clock management it was terrible
Sorry man. Touchdown over field goal everytime. Only take the field goal if youve taken all the time off the clock.
I hope we hire Vrabel and fire Taylor
mike vrabel it's not with the Bengals wtf are you talking about?
@@brendonmccord Missed the h and hit F on accident lol
Bengals win in spite of one of the dumbest coaches in the league!
And then there’s the bears
vegas
well the games are entirely scripted which explains it
This was clock management at its finest to secure the over and bengals spread. All the highly paid athletic actors played their parts to a tee.
Exactly!! It is bet on therefor it is manipulated.
"Clock mismanagment" very nice, what a great football related reality show 🏅🏅
Hey, I've had a theory about this for many years.
I don’t get it why pass
Back up running back, back up kicker. And we have been taking the ball out of Joe burrows hands has only caused us harm
