The swirling effect of wind hitting an object is called Rotor in the aviation world, I was taught to think of air movements as as a fluid when I was learning to fly a paraglider,.very interesting video 👍

How to be a better shot in the wind. Go outside and shoot including in bad weather. The more you shoot the better you get. I shoot 3 or 4 times per week. In all weathers. I always shoot a tin of 500 pellets per session, sometimes up to 5 tins. You don't become better by sitting at home.
One of the things I found when a pellet is pushed side ways it also tends to drop , the more it's pushed the more it drops . This is because the bc is effected when the pellet starts to wobble . At longer ranges you can see the magnus effect come into play especially with the larger calibres.
In ballistics I learned that the wind has most effect nearer the target and target wind was what you needed to allow for. Makes sense really as the bullet / pellet has less energy nearer the target .
Good /useful video mate. I was out FT shooting earlier today, the wind was blowing quite strong, sometimes sending my 177 H+N FTT pellets 3" at 30yds and 5-6" at 50yds. Very very difficult. Bane of my shooting life the wind. I used it to see which pellet was best in the wind, H+N FTT or JSB 8.4s. In the end I decided no discernable difference really but very difficult to tell. Think I'll get some of those smoke bombs to see how it blows on our plinking range.
I'm a big fan of the jsb heavies mate, especially when dealing with the extended ranges and windier conditions. All things being equal they will be a little less susceptible to drift 😉 There's a pretty good vid on here on them side by side the 8.4 and 7.9s
If you ever repeat this idea try placing the smoke pellets at different heights, could give a better indication of any downward pressure on the pellets.
Always wanted to have a bubble machine half way up the range when i am shooting BR but not sure the other competitors would appreciate it ... but maybe the bubble idea would be easier to read and last longer in the wind ?
Interesting isn't it. Easy to think that if you are in a sheltered spot, then the effect of the wind should be minimised, but the wind travelling over something creates a void behind, that needs to be filled, hence the swirling effect you saw of fresh air entering into the space created. I understand your statement that pellet movement created near to the barrel will have more of an effect the further the pellet goes, but the pellet is faster leaving the barrel, than it is at the target. So the further you shoot out, the more the wind at the target end will affect it as the pellet slows down. Would be interesting to see the complete flight path of a pellet in those scenarios.
Shooting in an ally, your subject to a vortex effect, I shoot down the side of my house, with the next door neighbours the other side, even with the most gentle of wind in the air, it's forced up between houses, it's a problem I've always had to contend with.. As well as a breeze swirling over the gate behind me.. Excellent vid though..
Hi mate. To some extent heavier pellets will be less affected by the wind(all things being equal,which they often aren't in our sport) I've a couple of vids on the heavy pellets in the wind 😉
When I've tested in strong side winds the effect it has on different pellets the ones with the highest bc drift the least . So I did a nice test with jsb 8.4 and 10.3 and some 13 grn slugs . And the slugs with a bc of around 0.06 moved sideways much less than the pellets . And held a group better (ie less strung out) the pellets were similar with the heavier pellets drifting a bit less and holding a slightly better group .
What a superb demonstration of why we should never take long shots at live quarry.

I've been shooting outdoors for decades and the wind still does my bleedin' head in LOL.

If its been pushed sideways its encountering more friction and loosing energy so yes I would expect it to drop

Wind has most effect at mid range. This was proven by the USAMU via highest scores in US Service Rifle and Lomg-Range Competition

Try a fog machine, another thought would be put the smoke up at the level of pellet flight.
Do heavier pellets not help combat the wind? Or am I being naive (new to the sport) finding your videos really informative
