I think gaming culture is too filled with fulltime gamers. And even worse than that, games are trying to cater to these people, so you miss out if you dont fulltime play a game, but if you do fulltime play a game you arent fulfilled so it doesnt last.

This definitely feels very genre dependent as an rpg and fighting game fan games have honestly been the most fun they can be at the moment. While fps and action adventure games arent doing so hot in the current climate for reason or another. The player base for these games also commonly dont branch off paths to try different things and just funnel all their money and hope into lesser projects. Making this weird cycle of disappointment

Honestly like one of my fav genres are tactical/crpgs which are way less prevalent in the market. But man, Dragon Age Origins in early 2000; Divinity; Path of Exile; Baldur's Gate 3; New Arc Line is my next anticipated crpg. And these games just bang so I've had consistent fun. Other genres I prefer are hack & slash and metroidvanias which have so many prevalent, well-made franchises it's hard to get disappointed. But FPS games? So monotonous, it genuinely just feels like a point and click to me.

I've seen long enough to see a lot of genres have their rise and fall within certain periods. 8-bit to 16-bit everyone was doing platformers but got mostly burned out by the early 3D era with some exceptions like Crash, Spyro and Super Mario 64. 16-bit era was the rise of the JRPG and then it stalled for a while after PS2. And the 2000s decade was peak FPS on both PC and consoles.

They won’t change cause that’s all they know, doesn’t matter if you show how there’s greener pastures and healthier genres if it doesn’t have a gun they’re not interested. There's SOOO many incredible games, but people for whatever reason, only play PvP games. The video game industry isnt boring, nor is it even remotely close to being boring. People just need to expand their gaming beyond PvP pew pew games. Those do get boring after the 10,000 reskinned hero shooter, or COD wannabe.
Just this year we got FF7 Rebirth, Elden Ring DLC in a week, Hellblade 2, Paper Mario, Helldivers, Manor Lords just to name a few. Theres literally a video game for any genre lover, yet people are saying games are boring. 2023 arguably was the best year in gaming history. Theres no way people have beaten everything from last year already. And this year we still have a few bangers to look forward to Stalker 2 is my most anticipated.
2024 is suffering from video game fatigue because 2023 was so good. Happenes every year after a banger year. 2025 looks like its going to be another banger year for gaming. So 2026 will probably be dry like this year. Its just how video games have always gone, and will always go. Play different games, and youll realize gaming is still good. Just my thoughts

What I noticed trying to quit Overwatch recently is that fps games nowadays don't even focus on the basics anymore. The vast majority of fps games I tried either have bad gunplay, bad movement, or both. Not saying that all fps games need to be movement shooters, but it should still feel good- I thought XDefiant felt clunky as hell. Same with Apex honestly. THE FINALS as well. The bare fucking minimum for an fps should be good feeling mechanics, but companies aren't going for that anymore, they're just going for how much money they can squeeze out of you

I went to Game Development and Game Programming courses around 2017-2018 and I had this Indie Dev professor, I never forget one of the things he said.
When we asked about what the AAA was doing he said "Guys it's simple. Gamers pay money for fun and fulfillment. You want to sell microtransactions? You need to make your game fun enough to play, but not too much fun. And no fulfillment in the slightest. Point them towards the store for that."
That's why Gacha gameplay usually sucks and is shallow. So that you find the fulfillment with the gacha rolls instead.

So I am a dev, not a game dev (though I have) and I think that the way software is built these days has a huge role in the issues we see today also
You'll find it hard to find a company that doesn't use "agile development" it's a good idea don't get me wrong but the general idea is you're able to refocus whenever needed and you deliver incrementals of value. All the games you used to love would have been developed in a "waterfall" workflow... Basically you build thing entire thing and ship the entire thing and that's the end of it
There is no room for error, you HAVE to get it right the first time and so intensive testing happens before the product is shipped, that's not to say we don't test today however I work at a very very large media company today and they always work to an MVP and you can just tell that this is not people's passion
I could go on, but delivery of software in chunk ls in my opinion has really hurt quality

Ok, I do plan to watch all of this then edit anything in particular that might need to be changed if a point gets brought up that I didn't think about but with all that being said:
Video games are and will always be fun. It starts to feel draining if your surrounding yourself with the same kind of corporate, Triple A repetitiveness. Without renovation, things get stale. This is no different if you are an advent fan of music or films/tv. If you are just consuming the same multi-billion dollar projects created by the same corporations in the exact same genre, things will start to feel not fun anymore.
Video games however, thrive the most and genuinely feel fun again when you start to dive into the indie selection. - Super Meat Boy, Limbo, Fez, Hades, Slay the Spire, Return of the Obra Dinn, Papers Please, Stardew Valley, Spelunky, FTL, Inscryption. All phenomenal games, all incredibly fun, all started and made through a small team (or even by just one person) that feel fresh and new.
Video games will no longer be fun if you fail to expand and broaden your horizons and stick to the mediocrity of rehashed, run of the mill corpa projects.

Gaming used to be my main hobby, now it has slowly shifted towards fantasy and science fiction books. I used to like games for the fun times playing them and the stories they told. Modern games have become so shallow story wise and are turned into almost a day job to play rather than a past time. Books at least offer that itch of a good story and it is easy to find other people interested in the same stories to engage with.

It seems like the biggest culprits of this are the FPS/PVP action adventure games. A lot of the games I play are just RPGs, Platformers, and some others that I'm not really seeing any of these problems in. Not that there aren't genuine issues among some of those games either, but it feels like the "Games aren't fun anymore" is mainly pertaining to a specific genre or two. Splatoon, Paper Mario, so many other games have been a blast for years for me.
I do hope the whole loot crazed battle pass shit does eventually go away or at least a middle ground where it's not so atrocious.

I see the time thing with my students at school. When I was there age, I was already a real gaming fan. I had a few games I really enjoyed to come back a few times per week like Pokemon, Animal Crossing or Super Smash Bros. But also I was always saving up for a new game to play and enjoy for a few weeks and complete them, borrow them to my friends, talk about it, etc. Nowaday the "gamer kids" play like 2-3 games for months and years. Like atm everyone pumps every free second into Brawl Stars or Fortnite. They probably have like thousands of hours of playtime. When I was like 13/14 I have already experienced some of my most beloved games til today. And every now and then I enjoy getting back to them, replay them, while also playing new stuff. Its so weird seeing todays kids probably spend more time and money for video games then myself at their age, while making only a fraction of amazing experiences in this medium.

I dont know if I agree with that, because we're the original cast trully more diverse? Like tell me how cass is somehow less diverse now, or ana, tracer, genji and all them.
Now I can see this arguement for tank but that's not an issue caused by different visions so much as queue times and 5v5.
No I think it's actually having to do with the other point he makes where the devs goal isnt to make the game fun anymore, their goal is to appease as many people as they can moderately well, so instead of all the biggest ow fans trully enjoying the game to its fullest, now everyone can enjoy a little of overwatch but ultimately were all unhappy, because while I'll always keep playing echo, genji rein and doomfist, I'm not exactly having much fun on them, I'm being drip fed fun through artificially created wins, since the game now has a losers queue (which they admitted) it means the game is no longer rng based and rather is based around trying to even out wins and loses which I'm not saying the games completely rigged but theyve definitely diluted it with controlling your wins. But the kid that can barely hold a controller or keyboard is now also drip fed some fun because the only hero they can play, orisa, is always meta so instead of me being rewarded for my time and effort, creating a fun environment, now were all just able to play our heros irregardless of how good or bad we are and this is the philosophy that's killing games, as soon as you abandon fun for mass appeal, you will forever be cursed with an angry community 😂
They need to go back to making you feel rewarded for investing time into their game, not just giving out participation rewards in exchange for little Jimmy's moms money 😂

I think creators do know more about certain parts of games than devs do. I like to use racing as an analogy: game devs are like car designers. They know the science behind engineering and building a race car. Pro players are like professional drivers; they may not know the engineering science behind car design, but there is no doubt that they know things about cars that the designers can never know. An engineer can never understand things about a car's performance if they can't use it at the highest level. That's why it's a bad idea to design a car without driver input.

I definitely disagree on the trailer being synced to music point. A good trailer with a good song can easily get people excited to play a game. I do agree that it doesn't show anything really relevant to the game, but that's why there are different trailers, such as cinematic trailers, showcase trailers, gameplay trailers, teaser trailers, etc.

There's nothing compelling me to play games for more than an hour. It's like they're missing their souls. That, and I like playing games for the social aspects and the challenge of getting better. So many people I run into are just vicious, overly competitive, and have bad sportsmanship and it definitely has me in a chokehold of performance anxiety at all times.

I really do want a subjectively good competitive fps experience, and that is simultaneously the tragedy of Overwatch and part of what keeps it alive. Overwatch gathered a LOT of gamers initially in it's first years; from experienced to new fps players, it holds the gap between the old and new guard of fps gaming. To me it seems that all of the games that release now are low TTK hide-in-corner and team-push experience; even Apex with it's relatively high TTK has turned into a game of fear and sitting in wait for something to happen; and this is in great contrast to the early seasons of Overwatch (though balance, hard-counters, and playing rock-paper-scissors with teams in spawnrooms now makes Ow feel almost as bad; the players seem hopeful for change, and the devs seem to use that hope as a retention mechanism). Right now it is the only online-fps game that has such a depth of play, a large and rewarding competitive e-sports scene, and high TTK where I can out-mechanic people. Some games offer a similar experience but don't come with the whole package ex. Quake Champions is rewarding to play, but doesn't have the vibrant competitive scene that Overwatch has anymore. The competitive scene in Overwatch created a generation of gamers desiring a style of game that is not what the large majority of fps players want, and I think once a game comes along and is able to tick those certain boxes that Overwatch has (like Apex did for a little while, and like no-build Fortnite almost did), a lot of people might decide to switch.
I realize the subjectivity in this, but I think there will be quite a few people who feel at least somewhat the same as I do.

  • @Shzl47

There's a lot of contradictions in the gaming industry and gaming culture. 3 things stick out to me: the self-fulfilling prophecy of focusing on player numbers, the disdain for paid games that aren't single-player, and the blind hatred of microtransactions in free2play games.
The most egregious Player Numbers contradiction was for Elden Ring. So many articles about how Elden Ring lost X% of its players. Aren't we supposed to want games where we buy it, play it to completion, and then move on to the next one? I grow tired of the articles talking about Steam Player Numbers dropping 1 or 2 months after a game's launch. They're so counter-productive. They aren't indicative of a game's success or popularity.
The latest example of number 2 is Concord. It isn't even out yet and people are complaining about it not being free (it'll be $40 like Overwatch in 2016)
For number 3, I will always remember the post-launch feedback for Star Wars Squadrons. It was a paid game that had no post-launch roadmap. The players wanted more content updates, but there were no microtransactions to fund those updates. I wish more gamers would understand the purpose of microtransactions and would therefore complain about the implementations rather than their existence.

I'm gonna say this before watching the video to see if my opinion changes:
people changed, wanting always more and more. it went from this "it's a nice hobby" to "it's an addiction". most often than not, people play out of habit instead of pleasure, similar to smoking
games went from: fun stories and engaging gameplay, to FOMO machines that makes everything hard to obtain, leaning even more into the addiction aspect of it
I myself never got addicted to any game. I bought a playstation because I like to play and 100% single player games, something sony does very well
Gaming isn't a passion for me, or a habit, so it's still fun. Games went from this fun hobby you can do anytime, to a chore that you have some dopamine release
People are more distant, relationships are harder to form, cheating is very prevalent nowdays, jobs are boring or not fulfilling so the only constant in some people's lives is videogames, and even the videogames are underperforming, or being volatile as entertainment or safe space.
I myself stay at home because I often get disappointed with the bad company I find, and videogame were a saving grace for me. these days, it's boring. I have a lot of different activities, and videogames are one of them, but if I lost my console, I wouldn't be THAT affected
I have work, my violin, the gym, and I don't want to PLAY a chore when I get back home

Gaming aint a hobby anymore, its a business, ESPECIALLY when addressing multiplayer games. Single player games never fell off and honestly have risen higher and higher….in price and gameplay. Your fav new game is either 70$ and/or constantly hounding you for MORE MONEY, *cough* Destiny. Ima say it again and again and again, FORTNITE RUINED MULTIPLAYER with that goddam battlepass strategy. The CoD Black Ops 3 supply drop system was the greatest content model in history idc. Sbmm is a runner up, aint nobody tryna come home from work and sweat they ass off to go 22-18 every game and lose, outside of a ranked/comp mode. And finally this “Free to download” but littered with paywall content is the laziest and greediest strategy.
    “Make mid product”
    “Release new partial content”
“Content has no substance but lures new ppl to spend $ on cosmetics and progress instead of playing through game and earning for free BECAUSE IT TAKES MONTHS COMPARED TO DROPPING 5$”

I think Internet, where it showcases more toxicity and complain rather than positive energy, plays a big role too. When you start seeing these negative posts about gaming, just like you watching this video, you'll be subconsciously thinking the gaming industry is desperate. Because nowadays information can be delivered so easily and fast, and people focus way too much on the commentaries instead of simply playing the game, the FUN part of each game, which still exists, is way harder for players to discover than it used to be. Imo the quick solution is to play more singleplayer games instead of online. That way you'll concentrate more on the game itself instead of other player's reaction or judgement.

  • @joshuafenty5621

I think people also tend to get really caught up in sunk cost fallacy due to the micro transaction models these games set up. It’s much less painful to quit playing a game you spent $60 for once a long time ago, than a game you’ve spent an incalculable and large sum of money over time on. Battle Passes are super unhealthy for all the reasons people tend to talk about, but they also tend to make you feel forced to keep playing to finish the pass and get your money’s worth. The amount of time required to finish most Battle Passes is really bad for the players’ long term enjoyment; it burns you out.

  • @darcidious99

This is why I just about exclusively play Nintendo and indie titles, and even then they've taken steps towards the other modern gaming trends like lootbox mechanics in mobile titles and releasing half baked games full price under a "we'll update it later!" Mindset that luckily a lot of people have pushed back against. Nintendo is also really good at having diversity without any sense of it feeling like pandering, cause I'm sorry but Solider 76 exclusively felt like a pander decision and I'm a bi dude (maybe he was maybe he wasn't, IDK but I maybe wouldnt feel that way if Blizzard didn't make a character diversity wheel that turns diversity into the checklist we all kinda already saw).
Just remember guys, if you ever feel like buying into these shitty practices like overpriced skins and battle passes you have to dedicate a grind towards (meaning you're paying to work), hollow knight is a $15 masterpiece with a lot of content and its still cheaper than a whole ass skin.

I think competitive/ranked modes kind of ruined some games for a lot of people, you used to either only play with friends, or if you wanted to get better the end goal was being the best in your local circles. Most ranked games lost the sense of community and now you just sit at home grinding the same thing over and over with people you don't know and get frustrated and burned out when you realize being the best at it is no longer possible.
Theres probably a lot of people who enjoy that, but me personally hate ranked modes as a whole, or at least I never play ranked in team based games.
