- Marcus Smart and Joel Embiid perfectly exemplify the make-up of a modern-day beef. Two dudes with completely different personalities, going after the same goals, whose beef was sparked by some good ole fashioned shitposting in college.
It’s no secret that Embiid is a troll. The man calls himself Joel “Troel” Embiid across his social media platforms, so it’s not like he’s hiding the fact that he’s ready to pounce on an opportunity to poke fun at fellow NBA players.
But trolling is nothing new to Embiid and it’s something he’s been at for quite a while. His first-ever Instagram post in 2014 unlike most people wasn’t a selfie. It also wasn’t a wholesome picture of him and his family or even a cute picture of his dog doing something silly. Instead, Embiid chose violence and uploaded a picture of him dunking all over Marcus Smart in college. You gotta respect the commitment to the troll lifestyle.
Like Embiid, Smart has been the same dude dating back to his college years. He’s always been the guy who you would much rather have on your team than play against. Diving for loose balls, setting hard screens, and exaggerating every foul call, Smart is the true definition of all gas and no brakes. Playing with that type of fiery attitude has earned him a lot of success in the NBA, but it’s also led to a fair amount of problems.
So I’m sure you can imagine the result of putting a troll on the same court as the guy who plays every possession like it could be his last leads to good results right? Lol of course not! You came here for beef. And when these two are on the court together, they serve up some fine cuts. So sit back, relax and enjoy some spicy beef.

Went to high school w/ him. Marcus was a grade younger than me. Dude is a hell of a nice guy too off the court. Has a basketball camp every year. My dad coaches wrestling across the hall from the basketball gym. He held his camp the same time as Marcus held his. Marcus got Chipotle catered for all the kids and helpers. My Dad was psyched he got a free burrito, but he totally forgot to ask Marcus for an autograph. lost in the euphoria of free burritos. lolol c'mon mannn.

I really feel that deep down there's some mutual respect between Marcus and Joel...watching them play against each other over the years it's clear that they acknowledge and appreciate the Celtics-Sixers rivalry and their own personal 1v1 battle as rivals, but in spite of the flopping and trolling and cheap shots, you get the sense that they both possess the same admiration for the way that each of them will do whatever it takes to win, no matter the cost. These types of rivalries are the best in my opinion - it makes these games mean so much more.
I feel like these are the kinds that will end the moment one of them retires cuz it's not hard to imagine them immediately singing each other's praises once they don't actually have to play against each other

I feel like Embiid and Smart respect the hell out of each other, Smart knows Embiid is one of the best bigs we’ve seen in the past 20 years and Embiid knows it’s crazy that a guard is able to give him that much of a hassle on defense
These two players remind me of the toughness back in the 80s and 90s more than any other players today. Joel embiid is just so physical in his nature. Marcus Smart is a chained Rottweiler. Absolutely love these guys

Smart was so frustrating to watch as a KU fan lol. Guy was savvy, played with wisdom way above his age, and I love a guy that can go lock down anyone. They're def cut from the same cloth, agreed there.

I live in Philly, 3 years ago Embiid was always out in the clubs lol. I saw him out on 4 different occasions in one summer. First time I saw him he was coming out the club with Flutz, he had two bad light skin chicks with him, or Hispanic. Dude is massive up close man. Like huge, and I’m 6’2.5ft, made me feel like a child.
One small correction to your video. Smart backflipping on the Allen Fieldhouse floor was never going to be the last time that Kansas and Oklahoma State saw each other. Kansas got revenge on Smart the same year as the backflip. The Jayhawks beat OSU on their home floor later in the year. In a double OT thriller that went a long way in Kansas keeping it's Big 12 conference title streak going. The next year, Kansas and OSU split their season regular season matchups again, but this time Kansas won on it's home floor and OSU on it's home floor.

They’re simultaneously super easy to love, full of personality players and easy to hate, annoyances. Personally, I love them both.
Bummed that this video came out after the beef tournament started. This is a wonderful beef and would go very far in the bracket. Both players always playing each other in rival teams, both are incredibly skilled at what they do, and both give each other absolute hell whenever they play one another.
