  • On "My Car Story" we're in Scottsdale AZ at Cars & Coffee at The Shops Gainey Village on 7-2-16.
    We're looking at a 1966 Volvo 1800 S Gran Turismo Touring Coupe.
The car's Owner is Ernie Shack. Ernie had a car like this in college and shares this car is “His Love”. I’m so glad for Ernie that his desire to find another one like it paid off and that he’s reunited with his car.
    ENJOY!

Just beautiful. Just like Ernie, I had a '68 while in college but sold it before leaving for the Peace Corps, not wanting to burden my parents with an extra car for two years. I've regretted that decision for 33 years, hahahaha. I loved that car. Bought it for $3,600 in '81 and it would now be worth at least $20,000. I don't think it would ever have matched the value of the highest-value examples, which can be above $50,000, because it had been wrecked before I bought it. Though repaired, if the light was just right, one could see a slight ridge along the front left fender ... a weld done to add a new fender to the unibody. That fact entered into my decision to sell it, as well. Still ... !!!!!!

Just watched your video again Ernie terrific presentation on your outstanding '66 1800S. And Lou you are very natural interviewer good job too! I'm working on my '67 interior to make it as nice and stock as yours. I did notice all your Swedish non U.S. export instruments but the speedometer is in MPH. Someone exported Felicia from Europe. Also the Recaro reclining seat hinges I also added a set to my '67. Of note I added NOS slip on headrests too. Hope we meet at a VSA meet some day. Perhaps the ipd swapmeet. I'm going to try and make it for the first time in 2018 Scott Oja said he and a few are going to try and make it this year as well. Perhaps you could join his caravan.

This is my dream car! Except I love the P1800E models. The grille is more flat and it gives a more distinctive look. These are far one of the most reliable sport cars every made. Hats of to the Swedes!

@LouConstabile thanks for the video, and also to the owner of this fine car. Makes me crazy, it's so fine. I don't care about speed, but just want a beautiful car that I can feel the road through. And it might help me forget the loss of my '64 Barracuda. (And it just occurred to me that I commented a year or two ago on your video of such Barracudas ...) Finally, I thought I saw someone post yesterday on this thread about the famous 3M-mile 1800s, so thought I'd add this: th-cam.com/video/AL49FBPqcdY/w-d-xo.html

Next, how about an MGB, or a Triumph Spitfire, or one of the Mercedes such as Pagoda (W113), 190SL, R107, or R129. Though I think I'd prefer the more humble P1800!

I can forgive the ugly louvres over the rear window but only because the enthusiastic owner likes them so much. Roger Moore sadly passed away last month.

Hi Andrew Graham, Great to see interest in a car rise when it becomes part of a movie or TV series, and this one has that appeal, Lou

I never liked the rear-view mirror on the dash. The rear window sits a little high so the mirror sitting so low doesn't allow a clear view out the back. As Ernie says, Volvo moved it up to the windshield in '69. It could also be that I'm short, so the angle was not favorable. A taller driver, like an average Swede, might not have had a problem.
