Man driving in LA looks rough, that 1800 is longing for some long backroads.

One of my favourites. (There's always some idiot in a pickup that has to be there yesterday, then gets stopped at the next red light. They never learn.)

Enjoyable video! Some would say the 1800 is a grand touring car, not a sports car. I can see that, with a bit of room for luggage in the trunk, comfortable seats, a supple suspension system, decent brakes, and modest power output rather than hyperactivity.
The dealbreaker for me was definitely the low driving position. I'm sentenced to being a sedan/station wagon guy.

David when you see so many classic Volvos, you have to wonder why is it that these classic cars were stopped, so many exciting cars like the P-1800, the 140 series, ,the 164,the 240, among the vast majority of the lineups a car for each type person, I know they made like a newer version of the P-100ES, based on the original P-1800 ES it*s an eye Turner when they came out.

The Rover P6 had the B-W gearbox from 1966 to 76 and was notorious for the thump when engaging Low. You could try power on, power off, brakes on, brakes off but at some stage before stopping there would be that thud. It never seemed to do any harm and might have been worse on the Rover as the deDion setup meant the differential was mounted directly to the body. The Volvo seemed to run very nicely.

Nice drive David. Some of us enjoy the sound of a 4 cylinder in traffic. The view over the hood is lovely too. Oh, and the squeal of the disc brakes too.
I have previously commented that a career as a mechanic specialising in old Volvos might not provide an adequate income. Then I recall on Jay Leno's Garage the Cadillac with a fold down roof. The person with Jay Leno was a mechanic who specialised in Caddys with soft top problems.
He would travel all over USA to go to the car with issues, fix them and get paid for repair work and travel. There are probably many more Volvos up to 940 than Caddys in the US. Specialise in these and you may have enough work. Then again I know little of your circumstances or opportunities or intentions so just ignore my nosey suggestion.

I once owned a P1800es with automatic transmission. Terribly slow. Now es with four speed with overdrive. Better not still not fast.
    Mine is nearly perfect condition.😎

Really is a shame cars like this arent made anymore - reliable, simple, beautiful, comfortable for long trips and relatively economic. Nowadays you gotta compromise - you either get a small car which isnt comfortable and struggles on long trips, or a big car which struggles in city and has high tax and whirlpools the gastank. Yesterday i saw a used Volvo C30 being sold in my town for 4000$, and its design clearly takes inspiration from the P1800.

How delicate the indicator stalk is, rumour is the engine was derived from use in a Tractor.

My father has a 1800S, it has the B18B engine, you can look up all the vehicles from volvo that that engine was used in, it would probably be quite a lot, at least for the B18 family, the B18B is a little different.

I don't know whether the 1800 can be retrofitted with an AW70/71 for the extra gear.

Thanks for calling it a 1800E and not a P1800E like a lot of people do. It was called P1800 when it was built in england, when volvo moved production to Sweden it became the 1800S till the 1800E with fuel injection was used.the last 2 years the 1800ES wagon version was produced. I have owned 6. 5 1800S and 1 1800E to bad you have the auto and not the german gear box with over drive.
