I am not going to lie, this video was the thing that finally got me playing Magic.
I had always been a passive observer watching some of my older friends collect and play Magic, and was intrigued but also put off by the vast repository of cards, lore, and game knowledge they all had. I feel many new players experience this, but Magic was intimidating, and trying to breach the 30 years of history was difficult. It didn't help that I never had a solid introduction. I picked up a deck builders kit around Dragons of Tarkir to play with some others, but generally had no idea what I was doing. So, the cards were tossed months later and Magic simply faded- I didn't give it much thought besides that.
But somehow when browsing TH-cam, as I find myself doing more and more these days, your videos kept getting recommended to me. Maybe it was the fact I was beginning to get into D&D and general nerd culture overall, but I kept seeing these lore and art videos from you. Eventually, I clicked on one. I watched it, saw that it was MTG related and offhand just dismissed it. But it kept appearing in my recommended "hey finish this video" section. And so when you released this video, about "Ravnica," something I had heard floating around due to MTGA's launch and distributed among strategy game players on TH-cam and Twitch, I checked it out.
Everything, from the relaxing, presentable editing and voice, to the breakdown on the colors that represent the game, to the exploration of one of Magic's greatest planes, ignited a spark of interest in me that has led me to spend far too much money and time in the game, but still getting just the right amount of enjoyment to make it all worth it. You sir, have truly affected my life and quickly created what I imagine will be a lifelong passion.
I just wanted to say, not even knowing if you will ever see this comment months after this video's release,
    Thank you.

Thats why I get so excited for ravnica sets because I can have an identity when playing cards where I cant with other sets. I can identify with a guild and act like that guild while playing where other sets I feel like im just playing a mish mash of cards.

Sam you have to be one of the greatest video essayists I’ve ever seen on the platform
I’ve only gotten into Magic about six months ago or so, and your Black Lotus video was the first proper Magic content I’ve seen on TH-cam, but suffice to say I was blown away!
You’re videos always have a crazy high amount of quality, and from this one they just seem to be getting better and better!
So I just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to the TH-cam magic community, and your reminders for why I love this game so much
Much love from South Africa, thanks once again for doing what you do, and I look forward to watching your next video, peace!

ravnica was one of the first major sets i really dove into & was my absolute favorite as a kid, it's amazing to see how much work has to go into expressing something as deceptively simple as 'the first set happens during autumn'. i remember the cards & the game itself was always very good at linking cards together through typing, naming, effects, artwork, etc. even without background knowledge of the wider lore. i'm just impressed with how much meticulous thought & planning has to go into every aspect of a deep & successful expansion set like this. amazing video & critique!

I really enjoy the play on color throughout this video. I expected your take on the color pairings, and you started there, but then dove into the actual color of the actual images. Then we experienced the color that time gives all things as it strides along - seasons, past, future.

im in love with your visuall essays( calling them video is bunching them with other content of this site and feels deteriorating). you go in depth on your subject, are articulate and leave nothing to be desired if not simply more of this content.
please keep doing those and keep up the quality of work you put into them. I like your choices of topics and always look foward to your next publication. hats off to you

That was an amazing analysis of ravnica and it's position within the artistic and narrative world of magic. It's awesome how something like colours can become philosophies through arrangement and then develop in such a complicated yet sensical way. There are some great artistic minds behind this game. They have such a strong grasp on the concepts with which they work.

I have a few genres of videos that I watch, and there's always the one or two creators that I would say that they define that genre.
You define the Magic genre, video essay genre, and overall quality genre.
You're someone that any aspiring creator looks up to due to sheer quality and skill, everything just as intentional and thought out as the game you talk about.
Thanks, Sam, for all that you do. Just know that you are one of the great TH-camrs that set the standard for quality content.

Your videos are absolutely gorgeous, man. Not only are they will written, but everything flows so smoothly and your voice puts me at an ease that no other TH-camr does. I cannot compliment you and express my gratitude enough. One of these days I will hopefully have the funds to pay back the joy you and your videos have given me. Thank you, Sam.
