Oh, Louise, you and I are kindred spirits. "Instead of putting brush to paper, scrolling Instagram and shopping online for a bunch of supplies." .... "A bookshelf full of self help books." .... perfectionism paralysis. Yes, yes and yes. You are a GEM and I am so thankful to you for your insights and wisdom.

Needed to hear this Louise, I see myself in each and every one of these bad habits, sometimes trying to be perfect doesn’t help at all, in fact I think it pulls you back. Not to mention the impostor sindrome, Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone 😅 love your art and so personal style and learned so much with your videos. Thank you so much! 😊

I often find myself doing things that are "more important " (including laundry 😮)than sitting and painting because I freeze up and can't seem to feel the joy I used to feel. I love watching your videos and I learn something from each one. I am fortunate in that I belong to a wonderful group of other watercolorists that push me. Thanks for THIS lesson ❤

Thanks so much Lisa! That's funny......I used to do that when I was studying at uni.......instead of writing an essay I had to get done, I'd see that the laundry needed folding.........oh look there's a laundry basket that requires my attention! 😂 💚

I had no idea that my favourite artist also goes through the same struggles that a noob artist like me do. The part where you said regarding planning to do the perfect thing and not ending up doing it- I felt it. I'm guilty of all of these, and while I know that it takes time to improve, it's a daily struggle to make my brain actually realize. Thank you so much for sharing this with is, I feel seen.

I have noticed it helps to have someone who is supportive but also understands art be my second set of eyes. We don't need yes people, we need knowledgeable, encouraging people (for me it's my brother). I don't take all of his tips/advice as our styles are different, but most of the time, he can name what's bothering me about a project without making me want to rip it all up. It's often too late to rescue it, but I feel better looking at a failure and knowing why it is one. 😂

Louise, I have admired your painting for years, and taken much inspiration from you and the fact that you also were doing this TH-cam channel! Filming editing posting is an incredible amount of work. I always say I am practicing my painting, art, I heard fail and failure so often in this video I had to stop as my anxiety started. Kindness, compassion and comparing one to only oneself are great tips. I encourage you to remove fail/failed/failure from your vocabulary. You are inspirational!❤ Love the quotes.

Thank you Louise😍This advice is so good and I really agree that with social media its easy to think that all of this great art out there is unattainable when you might be seeing only the persons best attempt after many tries! The fact you said that 25% of your paintings are somewhat failed attempts gives me hope! Thank you!

Yes, all of the above. I’ve been painting for about a year now in watercolour with no prior painting experience in any other medium and yet I expect to be like all of you stunning TH-camrs 😂 Great advice. I’ve realised for a long time that you bring how you are in life to every single thing you do, so it’s worthwhile working on getting rid of those habits everywhere. BTW, when doubt stops you doing things to improve your business, remember it’s not just your physical paintings that you bring (and those are staggeringly beautiful) but also your Self and that also is beautiful. I find I have favourite artists that I love to watch and a large component of my enjoyment comes from their presence. Wonderful video and great tips 🙏

Funny how so many of us who love you feel these feelings too. Thanks for the advice and the quotes! Fear of failure 😣 woof! My biggest one. I am going to hunt down that book you showed us… do it ANYWAY! Paul Atreides ( Frank Herbert’s Dune) had a mantra about fear… as silly as I feel,I say it in my head and I move forward and accept the failed paintings as practice… ( or what I need to face in life)😂. Oh that was just a study stop fussing. It’s ONLY paper should hang in my studio… thanks again for all you share. Never lose the joy.

Oh, my heaven's you have hit it on the head for me!! Procrastination, not believing in myself oh and all the rest you covered. Thank you so much for opening up about YOUR fears. Yes, life in general is also like that for me, sad isn't it that we cannot see just how wonderful we all are! Your honesty in your art and life experience is why I follow you and love your tutorials.
This year I grabbed the brush by the handle and put myself out there, 2 pieces are hanging at my local Art Society and 2 are right now on display at the 151st Orange Show.

I needed to hear that today! When you're looking to be taught, a teacher will be found ... and today you are definitely the voice that I needed to hear. So thank you for that, and now I'm going to revisit the painting that already has the first wash, and I'm avoiding painting the tricky bits for fear of messing that up. I nearly purchased some more painting supplies ...! As if that was going to help! Thank you Louise, you are a joy to watch 🙏🥰

As I sat down today I prepared to do a workshop on landscape painting. ( out of my comfort zone) I sketched it out and literally could not mix the first paints to begin. I was that apprehensive. Bombarded by negative thoughts of wasting good art paper and spending a tidy sum of money on a workshop I was afraid to do. The fear of failure was so bad that I did not even try. I found other things to do I thought was more important.
Your words resonated so soundly that tomorrow I will TRY but maybe on less expensive paper. I love to paint and felt the loss of accomplishment be it poor or good.
Thank you so much for your encouraging kind and thoughtful words.

I am not a painter, I am however an adult pencil colorist who is constantly striving/working on achieving realistic looking images (not where I would like to be, yet, but getting there, with improvement every year) and honestly these four bad habits you speak of applies “all across the board”, in all aspects of art, regardless of the mediums we use. As well as in life, in general. I 100% agree with each and every one of them and have mentioned these things many times over, in various ways, over the years. Great video!

Hi Louise, I read Sue Jeffers book a number of years ago and have applied that particular mantra of ‘ Feel the fear and do it anyway, your safety net will appear’ to some important life changing decisions. In this particular video your advice and guidance about how to approach difficulties experienced with art is so supportive and delivered with such kindness. Thank you.

Thank you Louise, guilty as charged. Great advice. Another obstacle for me is when some artist do tutorials and say they’re easy or for beginners, but when you try to do them you can’t do them. I guess there are different levels of beginners but I seem to take it to heart. Love your painting ❤

My pleasure Colleen and thank you. I'm guilty of that I think (sorry)! I find it hard to classify tutorials. You're right - there are varying degrees of beginners. Some beginners are just starting and others have been painting for a year or so. Don't take it to heart - learn at your own pace. It's not an easy medium to use. ❤️

I can't believe that you have all the same fears and worries about art that I (and probably everyone else watching this video) have, and yet your art is absolutely amazing.
Would you be willing to do a video showing your progress from when you first started watercolour painting, up until now please ?
Perhaps showing a painting when you made a breakthrough moment, or say a painting every 4, or six months as your artistic journey progressed, showing your progress, and some of your failures. It's kind of reassuring to know that an artist as accomplished as yourself also has self doubt and the fear of failure. Thanks for sharing as it makes me feel less of a failure with my art.

I have been painting for one whole month now. I've learned a lot from you but today I've learned a great deal. I was very critical of myself even while I'm painting I'm saying I don't know why I'm trying is I can't do it. You've given me hope. And I've enjoyed watching you paint those flowers.

Hi Louise, great little video! I am the Great Procrastinator, not because of fear of failure...but been going thru a stressful time, & need to get into my painting zone. Feeling kind of blocked with thoughts. I know taking the 1st step of picking up my brush will take me to my happy place! 😊

I love this, Louise. Maybe you saw my post about this very thing, or maybe I just got lucky! I’m so thrilled to be learning to paint with watercolor, and I’m also too hard on myself at times. But when I step back and think about it, I have improved, and I’m becoming more confident and consistent. I’ve also kept my paintings. There were a couple in particular that I thought were really good, but now I see that while they aren’t bad, I’ve definitely improved.
I know these things you are telling us are true, but every so often it’s helpful to be reminded. I’m definitely saving this for the next time I’m having self doubt or just feeling discouraged. Thank you! ❤

Thanks for the encouragement. It really helped me. It is so good to know that successful artists have paintings that fail. It helps because we think everyone else is painting perfectly every time, and we are the only one who paint duds! It helps get a realistic view of art, and watercolor.

Thank you so much for these tips. I am back doing my art after many years of neglect. Now I'm retired and trying to learn watercolor. I love the look of watercolor, and am determined to learn the medium...it is very difficult. I often want to chuck it and go back to pastels or oils. I'm a perfectionist and trying to stop doing so much detail, wanting everything to be a masterpiece. I love detail when it comes to graphite, but it had gotten to the point where it drives me to obsession and I lost all joy of art and stopped doing anything. I want the joy back and not be afraid of peoples opinion or my own inner critic, if it's not perfect...oh well, I'm learning.

Every word you said struck home. I began painting when I had to retire x felt if i didn't find something to fill my brain rather than bein miserable I'd go mad i painted at school x as i think what happened to a lot of people, you were told so often you were no good at it that i stopped. Anyway sorry going on x on!
I spent the best part of a year buying things x looking at my beautiful paper x not wanting to waste it, in the end gave myself a talking to x began, feel all of the things you said butvi try not listen to the words in my head! You DO improve x know so much more than when i started x you can always get another piece of paper. I love painting x i do more awful than good work but i go back x sometimes i actually make them into something i like. Thank you for speaking the way you have,we all need a bit of reminder why we began doing art!😺👍

Absolutely beautiful Louise and so very very true. I really appreciate your sincerity. We’re all learning no matter how long or short of a time we have done art and everyone can learn. I look back at some of my earlier paintings and sometimes wonder what I was thinking but the mileage of brushes to paper(or cotton) make the difference. I use to garden a lot and have made, landscaped many acres of raised beds, trellises, used river rock dug out of farmer’s fields and many neighbors used to say “I wish I could do that.” The only hard thing about it was work, nothing was complicated but it does prove the same points. When we enjoy a hobby and learn from our goof ups then it opens the door for more goods things. If someone is waiting for the talent to plop in their head or say that it isn’t in their genes then I don’t spend time trying to convince others anymore because our time is valuable too. I have been working in many kinds of pinks lately also. Your painting is so lovely. Hopefully I will be finished with this composition that has taken quite awhile, and I learned many useful things for the next time. Thank you, you are so very kind. By the way, since last July I have had to relearn eye hand coordination and gait training because I almost didn’t make it. Although there are long term effects, painting was the only way to regain coordination. If ever there was a stronger word for frustration over losing abilities, that is what I am going through but having a joyful spirit is curative too. I am just middle aged. Humility and humor.😂😊

LOLLLL!!! The very first bad habit that came to my head was "imposter syndrome" (aka comparing your work to the work of others and thinking you're crap, thinking you're not an actual artist and are just an imposter). I had made up my mind to put that in the comments if you didn't mention it, but what was bad habit number 1 AND number 2?.............🤣🤣🤣🤣 This was a great and VERY motivational video, Louise. All artists just starting their journey, and those that are well into it for that matter, should watch this. Thank you!☺☺☺

Your observations in this video are spot on. Thank you for pointing them out and for sharing the wonderful quotes. I feel motivated to get painting again. I have been delaying due to fear, but as you mentioned in the quote, though I may delay, time does not. I want to get better, and clearly the only way to do that is to let go of these bad habits as much as possible and to start creating better ones.
