    I wanted to let you all know that my pressing was flat and centered. I've seen a few issues with warps, but keep trying to get a replacement if that's the case. It's absolutely worth it.

      Will it ruin the sound otherwise?

      @@rabarebra Hi,
      Not sure what you are referring to. If you could clarify, I'll be happy to try and answer.

    • @rabarebra
      @rabarebra 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ThePressingMatters I'm referring to, if it has a slight warp, it won't affect the tracking - I think it is more in our mind, OCD - that it won't play good. I mean, 2-3mm up and down is not much, but it is annoying, yes. I got this new reissue with such a wobble up and down 2-3mm. Some call it warped, I don't know. The problem is side A and B. I am not sure if it is off-center or not. The label is at least not placed in center - my "mind" - or OCD - thinks it tracks badly because one can see slight movement of the tonearm to the left and right, just slightly.
      How much should be tolerable?
      My local store is not against swapping it to another copy. They even said I could mix them if I wanted. When we opened up another one, side D did have a different matrix (the one with CB - look at Discogs latest entry of this). Side D was the side I found the most amazing, so I went back home with this "slightly off-center" "slightly warped" record instead. Still not sure what to do about it. And thinking about this of the upcoming titles makes me worried about this quality control.

      Thanks for sharing! My Disc 1 is very slightly warped, but not to a point that it impacts sound.

    • @rabarebra
      @rabarebra 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vidabogotana They were kind at the store and swapped my Disc #1. We opened up two more copies, and we couldn't find my version with that side D with FC6060-B2-45. We only found the APA-002-45-D CB variant in the matrix. I got curious, and I spent another $100 (I'm in Europe) on that variant as well. Interesting thing, the matrix' runout is 6mm less on the APA-002-45-D CB, believe it or not - but not unbelievable since it is another cut (newer?). The treble is more boosted, say maybe +1 or +2 dB. Peter Gabriel is slightly off center (to the left - not much). You may hear this treble in the snare's seide and release of the snare drum.
      I prefer the sound on the FC6060-B2-45. It is more natural. Peter Gabriel is positioned directly in center.
      I've tested these on $13000 3-way studio monitors.
      I'm curious what other people think about these different cuts.

      Hi David,
      It was impossible to hide my reaction to this pressing! I had planned on examine each pressing and describing each one but I came to the conclusion that all these 33s we've known and loved are extremely hampered by the long sides of music. 18-20 minutes are idea, 25 mins not so much. That's why I decided to approach this from the perspective of the new pressing and make some brief references to the limitations of the others. Please come back and leave your thoughts on it here once you've heard it. I think many people enjoy the various perspectives that everyone contributes.
      Lamb is going to be a showstopper!

    I had been planning to pass on this round of the Atlantic 75 series. Actually there are only a handful I plan to buy. As far as this LP goes, I am not a huge fan of Phil Collins or Genesis for that matter. I used to like Genesis far more when I was in College. In fact a friend lent me the album and I had a 7 1/2" IPS Dolby B recording I made on my open reel tape deck. Your enthusiastic review made me recall what a sonic spectacular that LP was. I remember hearing some, but not all, of the various details and sonic attributes you described. I had a very good system for a college student, but my system now is far more discerning. @@ThePressingMatters Hey Scott. I hate this time of year and what it does to deliveries. I had 4 different delivery dates & FedEX missed all of them until today (Tuesday 11/21). Arrrgh. I ultrasonically cleaned the record and started to play it. It was the perfect pressing: Dead quiet, dead flat & dead centered. The stylus landed in the lead in groove and then total silence between tracks until the needle lifted from the runout groove. Amazing and I had it cranked up. My observations are like yours. One of the first things that blew me away was the 3D soundstage. It was like a quarter of a sphere, not unlike The Hatch Shell in Boston the the BSO and the Pops play. I heard things directly 180 deg. to my left and right about 12' away. At times the soundstage seemed to float up to 12' off the floor. There were a ton of details that I never remember hearing like this or at all. The instruments all had a sense of clarity and air around them like they were floating in space. The instruments were highly realistic sounding.
      I was amazed at the bass. At times I felt the deep bass rather than hear it. The two mid-woofers on each of my towers were visible fluttering from the deep bass. This was NOT rumble from the record surface or acoustic feed back, I have an isolation stand that I know prevents this. This only occurred during the deepest bass passages. I could also see my sub-woofer cone in motion at times. It is rare that there is enough bass that I can see the subs from 10' away. They are usually working but no visible vibration except certain passages on classical music. It was amazing how this LP could transition from LOUD, BOMBASTIC climaxes to soft and gentle passages. The instruments were clearly discernible at both loudness levels. I will have to measure the dynamic of this LP with my SPL meter.
      This album is so amazing that I did two things upon first listen. The first was to cue the LP up for a second play. The second was to go to the Acoustic Sounds website and ordered "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and "A Trick of the Tail" LPs from the Atlantic 75 series. Thanks Scott for your "enthusiastic" (polite was of saying "gushing") review. I am taking a new look at what is being issued on this series. I was passing on a lot of these titles, because the ones I'd want I have. The versions I own have very good sound, maybe not the best but up there. I will now have to rethink this based on how good this Genesis LP is. I have never heard it sound close to this quality. For example I have MoFi's of Foreigner, the Yes Fragile One Step and the Steven Wilson Yes Box. I will be interested to see reviews comparing these releases.

    Hi Scott,
    I happen to own a Classic Records Test Pressing of Selling England by the Pound on Clear Vinyl @45 Rpm i bought many moons ago.
    Classic Records only made 34 Test Pressings of this LP and i was lucky to get one of those copies.
    I wonder if it's in the same family of stampers as what was used etc in this New version?
    I dont have the New SEBTP, but I'll have to order one to compare. I also have Classic Records Test Pressing of Foxtrot and Lamb. I don't believe i have Nursery, or Live. I do have Peter Gabriel 1st and other artist

      Hi!
      Thanks for your comments. How lucky you are to have the test pressing! Very rare indeed. I did not know it was on clear vinyl, interesting. It should share the same plates as the new one with the exception of Side Two which was recut recently by Chris Bellman. I'm sure you'll enjoy the new release if you go for it. It's probably much quieter overall than the Classic, and that really helps this album come to life.

    Thanks! It's so fascinating to hear comments on these new records. I don't think I could deal with the constant side-flipping of the new editions, but it's great to know somebody cares & also that the master tapes have held up well. I have to admit I haven't listened to my Charisma LP (German import pressing) since I bought the SACD. The surround mix is terrific! *Selling England* is perhaps an "almost" concept album. It's a comment on 20th century consumerism except for "Firth of Fifth" & "More Fool Me" which don't seem to fit.

    • @ThePressingMatters

    Scott, often with "audiophile" pressings, at least on my system, while there is clarity, perhaps less distortion, etc, there is loss of immediacy, palpability, that I don't get compared to an OG. With an OG, I feel like I'm in a time machine being a fly on the wall of the recording studio. No matter who does the modern mastering RKS, BG, KPG, etc, they all seem to be limited by the age of the tapes - even during Classic Records era. In fact I've been more than happy selling most of my "audiophile" reissues in favor of getting the best/better OGs for that reason. I'm wondering if that aspect important to you or is the clarity and how its emphasized in your system may be more fun with the reissue vs. any feeling of "freshness" of the OGs? .

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      I understand what you are saying and I'll try and explain how I see this.
      I feel it's always a case by case basis. What I am most seeking is the best SQ, but also the quietest pressings that often come with reissues. Yes if one cares to search and find the elusive original that happens to also be quiet, thats great. But how often does that happen and how many originals did you have to purchase to find the one. I'm just not up to that any more. Give me a well done reissue such as this one and I'm thrilled. Same with the Tone Poets, Craft etc. I'm not looking for more detail, but a nice balance of quality recording, balanced mastering and impeccable pressing. I don't lose sleep over the crackly shaded dog that had a touch more bloom than the very fine AP reissue. I am just too sensitive to noisy pressings, so I prefer new records. I'm very selective. Top engineers, pressing plants and sourcing. A nice jacket and I'm happy. A mind blowing upgrade and I'm ecstatic. That's how o feel about SEBTP. It has everything I'm looking for. Same could be said for the AJA UHQR. One could easily sift through half a dozen OGs and spend the same amount as the UHQR. At some point it's good enough. In these two cases it's better in my opinion.

    It sounds like a fantastic re-recording. Genesis needs the mid-range and bass clarity for their nuance. 'In the room presence' would be wonderful with Peter's vocals. Sounds exciting. Phil's subtly on display! btw.....it is 'Firth of Fifth' as in the estuary (firth) of the (imaginary) Fifth River. Looking forward to hearing Steve's solo and those dramatic bass passages that were so great. As interesting as Peter's voicings are on 'Battle', it is the music I like best. Another nice review Scott. This album has always been kind of frustrating to me. Side One is so brilliant in its entirety, culminating with the stunning Firth of Fifth, and then things kind of fall apart somewhat with Side Two's opening track - the overly busy/wordy The Battle of Epping forest. Very curious to know if you have subscribed to the entire Atlantic 75th series or if you are picking and choosing favorite titles?

      Hi Micheal, thank you for your comment. I have to say I used to feel the same about Battle of Epping Forest. Because although it's the same song obviously, I never have appreciated it as much as how I heard it here. It's taken on a new dimension, more so in the music having more interest and impact but also the vocal. It's admittedly not reaching the emotional heights of Firth of Firtg and Cinema Show, but I think its stature just increased immeasurably. I hope you can hear this version at some point.
      I did not subscribe, though I'd love to, it's just too much money. I'm content with about 20 -25 preordered and I'll go from there. Thanks so much for watching!

      @ThePressingMatters  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comment!
      Yes, that came to light after this video was made. I've followed along with it and it may have been done due to an issue with the original plate. I don't hear any issues with this side on my set with the original plate, so something must have come up after the first batch was pressed. From what I gather, the new cut sounds fine and in keeping with the sound across all the sides.it will be interesting if one ends up being preferred. Nevertheless, I wouldn't let this deter you from getting the record. It's quite a leap in sound quality.

    Scott what a lovely video! Couldn't agree more about the status of this masterpiece. With regards to the Atl 45 rpm, I heard lots of copies: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Blue Hatters, Small Hatters, Large Hatters, from EU, US, UK and what not. I always came back to the German Large man hatter (NOT the Virgin green/red labels which has a wrong stereo balans inclined to the right). My German copy is even better that the classic records 33 rpm. Just saying. Perhaps you can check that one out once? Will be quite interesting. Anyway in the meantime I'll order the ATL 45 rpm. Oh btw, in your video I believe you consequently reversed the title of "Firth of Fifth". It's because of the emotions I'm sure (ghe ghe).

      I plan to track down that German pressing because several people have mentioned it as a good one. As far as Firth of Fifth. I can't believe I have been saying it incorrectly for years and no one has corrected me. I guess making that error on a public forum was the answer! Lol. I have no idea what it refers to. I figured it was something like the Fifth Duke of Firth or something very British! So I now stand corrected!

    I'm a long-time friend of Oz's, by the way. I'm not that familiar with the album, but a couple of questions have come up. 1) Whether the 45rpm format works for this album as a few have pointed out that there's a side flip at an inopportune time. 2) There's an audible tape dropout.
    What do you think?

      Nice to hear from you Jeff. This is my thought on it.
      There is a small dropout or tape issue. In my opinion it is so insignificant, I don't think most would notice it. It should in no way deter someone interested in this from going forward.
      I found the side breaks on this album unobtrusive. No longer composition is split.
      Also I didn't find any sound difference in the newly cut side 2 of any concern.
