This was a super helpful summary as the Lamb is probably in my Top 5 albums ever. When I met Steve Hackett 5 years ago, I asked him what his favorite track on the album was. He surprised me by stating "Fly On The Windshield" and especially Tony Banks' work on the section you described in the review haha. It's now one of my favorie tracks. I'm wondering how intense "The Waiting Room" will sound on this pressing?? Can't wait to hear. Great video bud!
Thank you Brennan! Funny I did have a comment about The Waiting Room but some things were edited out for time reasons. I said that I had heard it in a new way and discovered things within it I hadn't noticed before. It rose in my estimation on this pressing. Fly On A Windshield is a thrill to hear, and it must be to play on as well. Both Tony and Steve have commented on it being one of the greatest moments on the album. If it's a top album for you, you'll definitely want to hear this pressing. It's up there with the best.
Oops, sorry for my punctuated chat entries, I should have been writing here in the comments.... I was trying to say that one of your videos a few months ago got me to pay close attention to Genesis. It was when Chad announced the Atlantic 75 series. You did a video about some noteworthy Genesis albums that Chad said would be part of this series. After that video, I streamed Lamb, Trick of the Tail, and Selling England, via Qobuz and a hi-fit network streamer connected to my main system. I turned off my phone and really listened to these records, in their entirety, for the first time. (on separate days) One of the greatest things is when you discover an amazing record that has been around for years that had slid under your radar. That was my experience with these three titles. So I pre-ordered them from Acoustic Sounds and I've now received Selling England and Lamb, and I'm thrilled to own these amazing sounding versions of this fantastic music. Today's video in particular was really educational for me. I really appreciate your attention to detail, and the balance of your comments about SQ, the music itself, and the packaging. (Hey, the packaging is part of the tactile experience of owning vinyl. It's not the most important thing, but gorgeous, thoughtful, creative, impressive packaging is part of the appeal of vinyl and elevates the experience of a record for me.) Anyway, thanks for another well thought out and super informative and fun video. Ron
Hi Ron, I think you've chosen your first picks well. These records are such a treat that I NEVER thought I'd see in my lifetime. I dreamed about this happening somehow and I'm very pleased it's with this series. These are wonderful and the price is right. So glad these are not expensive UHQRs. I'll report the news on the next two coming up in April. Thanks for your comments and have a wonderful holiday!
Can't wait to get my copy. As a bassist myself that underpinning bass are Rutherford's bass pedals. Great low-end used expertly by Genesis. Great channel.
Hi Joe! Thank you! I think you are going to love what they did with this. And it seems you are wise to get it now. We don't really know how many more times they will repress this. Please come back and let me know what you think!
Thanks Scott! I couldn’t agree more on your two points: 1). The Classic 33 is a bit “bass heavy” which IMO applies also to Classic’s other reissues of the Genesis/PG albums. 2). “Small bites” - the lengthy album in better sounding AND in 45, I’ve discovered a lot more musical details in the recording/ production that I missed through the years playing this iconic album. Bravo!
It is incredible how this reveals texture, layers and detail that draw you in and give you an appreciation of the intent of the composition I really enjoyed hearing what I thought was one keyboard or synth only to discover exquisite layering. Same in the bass, drums and guitars. I could have said more about all their contributions, but I gotta say Phil is at the top of his game here.
Just another great review! Your channel is one of the very few who cover both the musical and the pressing aspects of an album. I love that very much. We seem to have a lot of common in musical taste, that meeas wide open. Thank you a lot for your work - Reto, Switzerland
Scott I really love your shows. I reviewed all my UK (all Porky's), US on ATCO (all Porky's too) and German copies including the Classic Record. I owe a bunch of other European copies as well and a Canadian, but they can be left out of the equation. So, for the US, I owe a promotional copy and two Monarch pressing (MO suffix on label). However, they sound quite dull in comparison to the superior UK "Porky x Johnnie" / "Pecko" / "Pecko" / "Porky" (2U/2U/2U/2U). Yes I know, the one with the terrible hum on both sides one and two (it’s even on the 1st gen CD!) and the (alleged) skip on Back in NYC. Anyway (what a coincidence) the 1st UK blows everything out of the water I’ve got so far in all respects. It’s really no comparison. Now I was informed long time ago that they ordered a recall back then, because of that skip and they also obviously addressed the hum. So they did a recut for side 2 ("Pecko" 3U). One can tell by the narrower runout section. It’s clearly another cut. However, I owe three 2U copies (the 2U was the very first cut), but just one copy actually skips on track one of side two. So, perhaps not all, or even just a minority have that infamous skip. Maybe they did the recall because of the hum after all. Who knows... To wrap things up. For the remaining copies I have: the UK 2U/3U/2U/2U, has obviously no skips and no hum on both sides but sounds just a little bit less sparkling to me; the later "Porky's Prime Cut" sound quite good; the German is quite good too, but that's only for side 1. The Classic Record sound similar to the US copies I have: also dull (just as all my CRs for the Genesis catalogue) but at least it's clean and silent. That brings me to my final conclusion. I'd say, try to score a UK "Porky x Johnnie" (2U/2U/2U/2U) without the skip but WITH the hum (there is no way around unfortunately) which - lets be honest - is blown away by archangel Gabriel. I at least will pass on, on the Atlantic 75 Anny. There is no doubt in my mind that It betters the Classic Record, as you said, but if it does better the 1st UK, remains to be seen… Btw I saw another reviewer on YT that preferred the US ATCO Porky in some ways (Gabriels voice) over the Atlantic 75 release. That was an interesting observation. Just saying…
Great observations, thank you! I was hoping we'd get some insight from someone who had UK pressings of various pedigree and here we are. I'm pretty sensitive to noise (and hum!) so being in the US, I'm not sure I'd go down the path of finding a clean copy of your favorite. It could get very expensive! On the flip side I know the Atlantic would be expensive for you to try as well. (assuming you are in the UK?) As with all these shootouts, I have to work with what I have (or have access to) and in this case none of my associates had a UK of this title. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and want to thank you for shedding some light on the various pressings I did not get to hear. Wishing you the best in 2024!
Nice review. Glad you came to your senses (at least somewhat) about the Classic pressing. I bought it when it came out, never even got through the whole thing. Ridiculous (and all too common) mastering and eq choices on that one. AP is quite good.
I am excited to experience this new recording. I have always thought musically the album was the pinnacle of the band. Your comments only reinforce my anticipation. 'Hairless Heart' has been one of my favorites and it is one of the lyrical hinge pins. The re-mix on the CD I hate and nearly purchased a German recording. Glad I waited. Love the bass on this album. Phil is spectacular. As I've grown older I find my perception of its length has shortened, although listening to its entirety is still a commitment. Can't wait to put this on the turntable after your comment. Yes, the lyrics are a challenge and would take more than one video to do it justice. Peter has subtly put a lot of related ideas into his story. As The New Yorker reviewer from 2014 said the album is "The 'Ulysses' of Concept Albums". The word 'dense' comes to mind. Sorry you are uninterested in my essay. If you like Genesis I highly recommend Richard Macphail's book "My Book of Genesis". It is not long, but filled with interesting and detailed accounts of the early years of the band. The guy is smart and his story is fascinating. A real 'hippie' with his own adventures woven in.
Awesome comments is never heard about the New Yorker comment and it's spot on. It's epic. dense and reveals more each time. I think with this release I will be immersing myself deeper into the world of the Lamb. It's just incredible what they got out of it this time!
@@ThePressingMatters I may just email you a PDF copy of my Lamb essay 'Nightmare or Nirvana'. It has some background information on the band and the writing of the album which you will probably already know, but from there I go through each scene and explain my take, how they combine for a total message. It sounds tedious but is not. The conclusions, however, are simply my opinions. Since the author of 'My Book of Genesis' is still in contact with Gabriel, I am planning on writing him to see if he can give suggestions on the best way of getting a copy to him. I'd love to get Peter's comments, but would not expect he has the time.
Thanks! I hope people like it. It was frustrating to do - there's so much that can be said about this, and it's difficult to condense it to a reasonable length. I had to discard the track by track breakdown, the storyline and focus on some personal highlights, packaging and basic sound comparison.
It sounds very much like you have just cost me £165 UK pounds to buy this in the new year . Very good review Scott , have a fantastic Xmas and happy new year , here is to a great 2024 and lots of vinyl collecting 😁👍
Thanks so much Tony, this will make as nice post-xmas present for yourself. I couldn't think of a better one! Wishing you the best in this new year. Thanks for being so supportive!
That is very true how much of a surprise this would have been for fans seeing this cover for the first time in comparison to the lavish artwork of the catalogue up to this point. It was the absolute opposite ! My copy will arrive in late January I am guessing. I am glad to hear the positive impressions you have - it’s reassuring 😊 It’s probably good in a way that the next Genesis releases in the series are still a few months away so that SEBTP and The Lamb can be the focus for a while. Cannot overlook in any way how incredible it is to have these albums repressed from original analogue tapes on high quality vinyl in these glorious jackets! Thanks Scott 👍
It's true a very dark Hipnosis design, fully in keeping the dark and surreal lyrics. It's a very unique album a really has never sounded better. I may do a more in depth track by track video if the interest is there. Yeah the price of this release is totally justified, and there would be no way I miss it or any of these. Dream come true for me! You're sure to love this release. Please come back and comment once you've heard it!
Wondering if AP will release some digital format with same remaster. I own a few old Classic Compact Discs by Classic Rec's (the two Carnegie Hall CDs of Belafonte among other) and all sound very very well not just relatively to other excellent CDs but even versus their vinyl version.
I just saw you are out of Miami. I was noticing the foliage behind you and wondered where you were writing from. I grew up in Naples (long ago), but currently reside in Denver.
Hi Scott. Thanks for your review. I have the Classic, Italy, Austria, UK Porky Pekko editions....I ordered the 75 Atlantic but not received yet. I usually use The Lamia for the testing. I did a recent test a couple of weeks ago and my favourite is the Italian...very close to the Austria or UK. I like the Classic but I found the voice not as present as in the original europeans which is the typical sound of Genesis Peter Gabriel era albums. I understand the vocals on this 75 is more like on the europeans with the other improvements that you mentioned. I will send my update when I get my copy. Thanks again.
Thanks for the review. I believe Steve was the main writer for "Hairless Heart." He's often included it in his live shows before the Genesis revival era. As you may recall, I love the remixes myself. I don't know if they sound different via streaming?
Now that you mention it I believe you're correct about the main writer for Hairless Heart. He and Tony made it into a mini masterpiece. I have to say I have not heard the remixes on vinyl. Just in the compressed crappy resolution of Spotify. So please don't take that comment as an absolute opinion. I've heard that the vinyl is less compressed than the CD, and the CD better than low res streaming. I'm sure there's something worthwhile there but it wasn't apparent on streaming. It comes across as clearer but less dynamic, like everything is loud and subtleties lost. Vocals had a pushed out quality. I think this might sound more contemporary when in a playlist, where the original mixes would sound off against other more modern music.
Another excellent review Scott, thanks. This is my favourite Genesis album and my OG UK copy has been played to death so this is a must buy for me. The innermost tracks have always suffered sound wise as it’s such a long album, so this new 45rpm issue hopefully remedies that problem. The 45rpm SEBTP was a real triumph IMO, so much so that I will probably never play my OG or the SACD again. Let’s hope Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot maintain the high standard which has been set so far.
I think you'll find the ending tracks benefit from the 45. There's no inner groove distortion at all naturally. It's spacious and doesn't lose fidelity anywwhere. Selling England was incredible and this maintains the standard given the somewhat different engineering style. Fingers crossed they keep it up!
Nice review. I didn’t have the Classic Records for mine just an OG US Porky. I’m not surprised with your results. And at this point the AP is actually cheaper than finding a clean CR, so the AP seems like a no-brainer for the “Best” pressing available.
Thank you for your comment! Wish I had still had the other pressings but I'm confident the new one is the best available for the price. The Classic is nice and I will never let it go, but there's much more to hear in this recording and the Atlantic finally shows this. Glad you enjoyed it too. Good job on your review sir!
I think the fatal flaw with the Nick Davis and Tony Banks CD's is that they just did not have the perspective of a third-party audiophile engineer/producer and fell overly in love with 5:1 surround. I'm glad the G-men sold their catalog so that true professionals of audio mastering and labels like Acoustic Sounds were able to get the license to do them properly. I just wish Wind and And then there were three were also on the list, but I bet you someone else will come along and give those a similar treatment. #2channelforever
Great video! Your AJA UHQR review was spot on! Is there anyway you would be willing to post a track from the AP75 Lamb? I really would love to a/b it. You rock, man!
I think you made some excellent and cogent points. I can't really argue with your evaluation of this release, however unless you are a diehard Genesis fan (guilty as charged) I don't know if this is so much better than some of the other available releases to justify the price. I have two 1974 Porky pressings (one SP and one PR) and I can't really notice a vast improvement. More bass and punch is found in the old pressings and the high end is a bit tamer. I found the new pressing to almost too bright in places. I might chalk that up to my system, but my 74 copies did not have this same issue. I suppose I was hoping for a more dramatic improvement over my older copies. Am I sorry I purchased this, definitely not. But would I recommend this as the definitive copy of this LP, probably not because of the price. Excellent review. 👽✌️
I hear you. This one was excellent, as expected, and for a super fan there is plenty to discover. But really it wasn't the revelation that Selling England was for me. I'm glad to have it but as you saw in the video, cautious about a blanket recommendation. It's expensive and there are other fine copies available. I think we'll see a bigger jump on the next two. Thanks for your comments, really helpful to others reading the comments.
Thanks for the detailed assessment which will help me decide whether to shell out the hefty price tag once it is available here in the UK..................I almost certainly will. Strangely I never much liked the album upon release, and I purchased mine on the first day it was released with the irritating hum included free of charge ! But much like Yes's Topographic Oceans this album has steadily grown on me over the years.
Thank you for watching Same here, always like it but not loved it. I'm very glad to have both of these copies. I think you'll find more to love on the new copy. It's deepened my appreciation for it for sure. And no hum!
the hum'ing Porky pressing still sounds fabulous, though. the hum is not noticeable when the music is ongoing. Peter sounds fantastic on this 1st UK pressing, and so does the effects and synths.
@@rabarebra if I were in the UK I'd definitely look around for UK or German pressings if they could be had for a reasonable price. Getting this set over there is just so expensive.
Thank you Adam. Hope you enjoy some of the recent content! There's three other Genesis related videos to check out and much more. Thanks so much for the support!
Great review Scott. I too have the Classic Records 33rpm and love it. I listen to it very infrequently, as it is a favourite and I don’t like to overplay it, but it is excellent. I’m really on the fence on this one as it is very expensive here in Europe. I also have the Classic Records 33rpm of Selling England and bought the 45rpm, following your video on it; I am not disappointed, it is phenomenal. This one is a bit of a monster though. I haven’t yet justified it to myself 😬 I’ll need to mull it over… 🤔
I can understand your hesitation. With what you'd pay there I would have to think carefully about. Quality and mastering is great. I know you'd love it but the price...ouch! The Classic 33 is a beauty and enough for most. This Atlantic is a deeper dive and reveals a lot you may have missed before.
@preservedmoose it is worth the $70 extra. and buying it from the local store is more secure than doing the import oneself from the US. with the VAT and custom, freight expense, getting it from the store is the best way. And if there are problems just go back your local store. It is worth the $70 extra (upon the $120 US price).
You've got to be a big fan of the Lamb to really justify this one. If you have copy you enjoy you probably are all set. I go into this more in the video. Selling England was great for sure.
Similarly with me, it’s not an album (CD version) I play all the way through very often. Having said that, the same applies to The Wall (Floyd) and one or two other doubles I have. Carpet Crawlers is up there among my favourite Genesis tracks and would also feature high up on my list of favourite all artists recordings, but overall, it’s one I don’t like anywhere near as much as Selling Rngland, for example.
There's always been something about this album that holds me at a distance. I enjoy much of it, but you can almost sense the tension within the band creating it. Add to that a story and lyrics that can get quite disturbing - well I appreciate it rather than enjoy it as a whole. The two albums which surround it are my favorites. It is rather like The Wall to me - great highlights, but odd story and disturbing lyrics as well as a sense of internal tension take it down a notch. As I said I'm not big on concept albums :-)
@@ThePressingMatters As an aside, but still prog related, I bought my first ever Premiata Forneria Marconi LP a couple of days ago. I’d been well aware of the band since the 70s but it’s taken this long for me to even see an album of theirs, let alone buy one. This one (Photos Of Ghosts) is in super condition and I’m really liking my first taste of Italian prog. This is on the Manticore label as they were signed up by Greg Lake and I can hear a few ELP-esque moments on it. Now I need to find their previous two albums (on which this one was mostly based) and their following one.
My thoughts: 1) I love the packaging as much as you did, although I had to go out and purchase 1 1/4" wide outer sleeves to accommodate it. 2) The mid-range is much clearer for sure and you can really hear the textures on the Eno-treated vocals, not to mention instrument separation throughout and all the weird sounds as well. 3) I agree, quieter than the Classic but better because of it. Controlled bass indeed. 3) I might love this album more than you because I"m a sucker for the concept records of yesteryear. I believe the instrumental pieces in between certain tracks were designed to give Peter time to change his costumes on stage. I can imagine that live, those pieces would seem much stronger or create a certain mood leading up to the next song. It must've been spine-tingling, to say the least. Side note: I'm hoping to see the Musical Box do the Lamb someday, their SEBTP show was/is unbelievably good. 4) did the weight of the vinyl seem less than 180g to you or is that just my imagination? Thank you Scott for yet another well-made video, your insights and observations are spot on.
Thank you for your thoughts on this. There's so much I couldn't fit it to this video I would have liked to elaborate on. The big numbers are fantastic as well but these instrumental interludes are even more interesting now. A nice break that was as you say, necessary to accommodate the costume changes. I can only imagine when Peter came out on Slipperman! I'd love to see the musical box perform this, or anything for that matter. Glad they are still out there keeping it alive!
I just last month saw The Musical Box for the first time. Amazing show (though the 'booming' bass was very distracting). They made me realize how avant-garde this band was. I was extremely disappointed (I misread the promo material) that they were not doing The Lamb production, nor even a song from the album. It is my understanding that they did the entire Lamb production last year and said they would never do it again. Ugh. With the 50th anniversary of the album's release next year, I was hoping they would re-stage it. Perhaps we should start a letter-writing (or email, or something else) campaign? I would eagerly anticipate such a concert.
thanks for the report on TMB! I can explain, it's not a greatest-hits show. To keep with integrity and authenticity, The Musical Box recreates the actual tours with the exact setlists and encores. They've performed the historic following tours, 72 Foxtrot, 73 SEBTP, the 74 SEBTP Canadian tour version called the "black show" with updated costumes and a bit different setlist, and finally the Lamb. If they did the 71 Nursery Cryme tour I'm not aware of it. It's like going back into a time machine! in 2024, they will be continuing the show you just witnessed, the 50th Anniversary of the 73-74 tour. Later in 74, the Lamb tour started in the US so hopefully we will see the Lamb tour happen again. They usually rotate them every few years. @@rk41gator
@@MrTgrewell Thanks. I don't know if it came from a fan or directly posted by The Musical Box but I am pretty certain the band stated that the one Lamb tour would be it. I hope not.
Hello Scott, Sorry to use the 'comments' just to ask a quick question. Forgive me. Do you know what happened to the TH-cam channel 'Music on record' with Mark Ward. (I think I have his name correct) ? Thanks very much. Mark. (Seattle)
I just did a search. Do you mean this? I don't know his name but it looks like what you might be referring to - youtube.com/@musiconrecord6724?si=zbCUMr5j5eL6jkMn
I still haven't sleeved it. Not sure what to do except be careful with it. There was a fellow on TH-cam that frankensteined some VSS sleeves to cover every leaf individually and wrap the gatefold but it was overkill in my opinion.
No I haven't yet, but I am a huge Gabriel fan too. I will order one of the versions soon and report in it. I was leaning towards Dark Side but haven't done extensive listening. Have you a preference?
@@ThePressingMatters I followed some of the incredible journey the album took , and did listen to both albums in full then segments. Either will be great, but I though the lightside a tad better for me, and have not been disappointed.
Ill stick with my Classic I think. And I think moving forward until Trick we will start to see less jumps in improvements over the 33s as mentioned because Foxtrot and Cryme just arnt recorded or mixed that great for a lot of tracks. Ive yet to compare my SEbtP 45 as well but I about to.
It's very possible that this might be the case Leon, I think Selling and Trick are the best recorded and offer the greatest potential. Yet it could be said that Foxtrot and Cryme could use the most help and it's possible these could offer a surprising jump. I'm planning to get them all so I will report on them anyway it goes. In the case of Lamb, I think the Classic is a very good option. Considering all the factors, especially if one already owns it.
Leon, I think Foxtrot and Cryme ain't that badly recorded, there are just too many bad masterings and pressings of them out there. I find the 2007 remix on SACD great on these. The snare actually sounds like a snare and not like a kettle pot like on many pressings. I think the 45RPM's of these will be a huge improvement when coming directly from the analogue tapes.
@@rabarebra All the ones Ive heard from the OG Pink Scroll to the Classic have had issues. The downside to the better versions like the classic is that you hear better how uneven their recordings were from track to track. If the new 45 uses the old Classic platrs then I have especially little hope as those seem to sound exceedingly identical to the 33s.
I got my copy of the lamb on Vinyl by Acoustic Sounds. I do not have a turntable to hear it and never will get one. I like cd's a lot better even though you don't hear the drums and guitar like vinyl. I thought Nick Davis remix of the lamb was superb on Hybrid-Sacd Dsd remastering as long as you do not have the volume to loud. the DvD-Audio had to much open space which i did not like. The colony of Slipperman the rip sound was taken out of the remix, The grand Parade the vocals drown out the background sound. which was minor. If Nick Davis kept the rip sound in the colony i would not have to buy another copy of this. I also have the the original AAD of the lamb on cd Japan mini Lp 1998 or 99 and it sounds great but not superb like the super audio cd . I think sound systems have different effects on your hearing experience also. i have my treble set on plus 2 and my bass on plus 4,
Thanks for the review Scott. This is my fav Genesis album BUT I am really not a fan of the 45rpm format, primarily due to cost and laziness, the constant changing of sides, etc. However, your review seems to indicate that my issues with the 45rpm format might be more tolerable with this release? I am waiting for the SACD primarily as I think that should sound really great too, and you get to listen pretty much to the whole production without too much interruption. Although your review has me second guessing if this vinyl edition might be worth sucking it up with the 45rpm format? The cost is substantial but maybe it’s worth it……just this once?
If you have SACD it might be worth waiting. But if you can't wait, get it. Once this is out of print it will hold its value. I doubt they will repress very often if at all due to the jacket. You probably won't lose a dime if you decide to sell it eventually.
@@ThePressingMatters That’s a great point about resale but knowing me once I have a record it’s tough for me to let it go. I was hoping to get all the Genesis 75th AP reissues on SACD, and was expecting them to be released at the same time as the vinyl editions. Seems that isn’t happening which has been disappointing.
Atlantic themselves will have a 33RPM version of these titles for you, @BigE-Ian so just skip the 45RPM versions if you don't like that format. 45RPM does give you the most details, though.
Just to clarify, will there be an original mix 33 in the Atlantic 33 series or is it a repress of the remix. And if it be original would it be Chris Bellman's latest?
@@ThePressingMatters Sorry for asking again: do you have to be subscribed to Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions to get the numbered ones? I'm in Europe hence the question. I have Lamb in order and wish it ships numbered to the store that carries AP titles here. Both Selling England I got came unnumbered but with different matrix's (from the same local store) - which is very odd and meaning there is no difference between numbered/unnumbered. Maybe they had FC6060 left and put it in an unnumbered album cover. The other variant had the APA matrix which should be the "unnumbered"-one.
@rabarebra I'm pretty sure the numbered ones are going to come directly from Acoustic Sounds, unless it's a particularly slow seller. Probably Europe and the rest of the world's distributors will be getting unnumbered. I know it's nice to have a numbered copy but assuming it's pressed at QRP (later on possibly by RTI) you are getting the same record. Now Selling England has the issue of matrix variations. It's frustrating. Original pressings had side two taken from a new cut, with the rest being Classic plates. Now it's reported there are some side four recuts. I've heard of some variations even among those. Why they didn't recut the whole record to begin with is a mystery. Cost cutting? Not sure, and there doesn't seem to be a consensus yet if the new sides are better or worse than Classics original plates. Sorry I can't elaborate more as I haven't heard the alternate side four.
@@ThePressingMatters I have two different side four. One with the FC6060 only and another with FC6060+APA+CB initials. Latter is the recut. I got a reply from Acoustic Sounds that the stampers got damaged.
@@ThePressingMatters Vinyl, especially the Gabriel era, would be best. CDs are said to be too compressed. SACDs are decent but they are OOP. They are cut from digital so you may still have the same opinion but they are readily available to try.
I might be inclined to try Duke or ATTWT, as I do not have originals of those any longer. Again I only heard these streaming and they seem loud and compressed (well they were compressed lol) Spotify will do that :-) I've heard that Trepass on vinyl was a definite improvement. Any top recommendations on which was the favorite remix in the whole catalog? Are the pressings decent??
@ThePressingMatters 000827 I did not open it yet or the selling england... Sending out my turntable after the holidays for a rebuild and a 10 + week turnaround
@@michaeldelorenzo6827 I would suggest giving them a visual check at the very least, and if possible play everything through somehow. I had no issues at all with mine, but be aware that once your return window is closed, they may be less willing to replace anything if you discover anything amiss.

I turned off my phone and really listened to these records, in their entirety, for the first time. (on separate days)
One of the greatest things is when you discover an amazing record that has been around for years that had slid under your radar.
It's not the most important thing, but gorgeous, thoughtful, creative, impressive packaging is part of the appeal of vinyl and elevates the experience of a record for me.)
Anyway, thanks for another well thought out and super informative and fun video.
Ron
Hi Ron,
I think you've chosen your first picks well.
YES!!!! PLEASSSSSSE!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Thank you Reto!
I'm glad you like my approach to these reviews. Your comments are very much appreciated!
There is no doubt in my mind that It betters the Classic Record, as you said, but if it does better the 1st UK, remains to be seen…
Btw I saw another reviewer on YT that preferred the US ATCO Porky in some ways (Gabriels voice) over the Atlantic 75 release.
(assuming you are in the UK?)
As with all these shootouts, I have to work with what I have (or have access to) and in this case none of my associates had a UK of this title. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and want to thank you for shedding some light on the various pressings I did not get to hear.
Wishing you the best in 2024!
Thanks!
Thank you for your support, Marco! I'm glad you found value in this one.
@@rk41gator Oh yes now I remember, sorry. Yes I would love to read it if you could send me the PDF.
@@ThePressingMatters Thanks.
Thank you! I got it! Will read later. Looking forward to it.
Can’t wait for your review Scott!
@@ThePressingMatters looking forward to see what 2024 brings to the vinyl collector 😁.
That is very true how much of a surprise this would have been for fans seeing this cover for the first time in comparison to the lavish artwork of the catalogue up to this point. It was the absolute opposite !
My copy will arrive in late January I am guessing. I am glad to hear the positive impressions you have - it’s reassuring 😊
It’s probably good in a way that the next Genesis releases in the series are still a few months away so that SEBTP and The Lamb can be the focus for a while.
@@ThePressingMatters Would welcome a more detailed track review, quite an undertaking I can only imagine!
@@johns126 Let me think about it. I'm up to the challenge!
Wondering if AP will release some digital format with same remaster. I own a few old Classic Compact Discs by Classic Rec's (the two Carnegie Hall CDs of Belafonte among other) and all sound very very well not just relatively to other excellent CDs but even versus their vinyl version.
Yes this and many of the Atlantic 75 series are coming on hybrid SACD, same mastering I assume.
Thanks sir.
Your review was of the highest quality, technically and emotionally both. 👍
@@ontherun8 Thank you! I appreciate your comments.
I just saw you are out of Miami. I was noticing the foliage behind you and wondered where you were writing from. I grew up in Naples (long ago), but currently reside in Denver.
I'm in Miami, upper east side, and I'm very fortunate that the grounds of this house are beautifully landscaped.
Looking forward to your comments!
@@ThePressingMatters many thanks!
You're absolutely right. Turn it over to the experts, the best in the business with a proven track record.
Great video! Your AJA UHQR review was spot on! Is there anyway you would be willing to post a track from the AP75 Lamb? I really would love to a/b it. You rock, man!
Thanks. I certainly could, but my friend Oz does any rips for me. Next time I see him I will get the Classic and the Atlantic in a hi res file.
Awesome, thanks!
I have yet to receive my copy of Selling England By the Pound. I am happy to hear that it's a better reissue. 👍
@@vcp93 Absolutely worth the wait in my opinion
Thanks for the detailed assessment which will help me decide whether to shell out the hefty price tag once it is available here in the UK..................I almost certainly will. Strangely I never much liked the album upon release, and I purchased mine on the first day it was released with the irritating hum included free of charge ! But much like Yes's Topographic Oceans this album has steadily grown on me over the years.
Thank you for watching
Same here, always like it but not loved it.
@@ThePressingMatters Just got a NM 1st UK for $22 in a thrift store. They are not very expensive.
@rabarebra Wow, that would not happen in my area!
This release might be perfect for the Vinyl Storage Solutions multi-functional sleeves.
Someone out there has done a video using dual pocket sleeves on this set. It was pretty involved. I'm looking at options!
Great review. Subscribed!
I haven’t yet justified it to myself 😬
I’ll need to mull it over… 🤔
I can understand your hesitation.
I like SEBTP that I eventually picked up, but The lamb... The only thing stopping me is the price tag, yet no doubt it's gonna sound good
You've got to be a big fan of the Lamb to really justify this one.
@@robertmorgan9205 This is an area I've yet to explore. Thanks for giving me a lead on where I might start.
Fantastic review! I’m with you on the album. Not my favorite. But I hope that this press will give it a new life for me too.
I think it will. I noticed I was less focused on Gabriel and marveling at the music. You might have a new appreciation for this fascinating album!

Scott what outer sleeve did you use for the 45 rpm lamb ?
I haven't found a suitable sleeve yet that doesn't look terrible
I still haven't sleeved it. Not sure what to do except be careful with it. There was a fellow on TH-cam that frankensteined some VSS sleeves to cover every leaf individually and wrap the gatefold but it was overkill in my opinion.
Have you bought the new Gabriel album ? Light side or Darkside. Not a huge Gabriel fan, but this is just superb.
@@celtic-audiophile Great! Thank you for your take on it. You'll see something from me at some point in the near future.
@@leon9021 Thanks for the info. Hopefully the new 45 will be 100% recut, and not the old Classic.
@@leon9021 What has the issues been on the OG Pink Scroll?
@BigE-Ian True, I'm anxious to give one a try. Hopefully soon.
Great video. Subscribed. Did you get a numbered one?
Thank you!
Glad to have you here! Yes, I think mine is in the 700 range. I'd have to check later tonight
I checked mine, it's 0717
@@ThePressingMatters I have two different side four. One with the FC6060 only and another with FC6060+APA+CB initials. Latter is the recut. I got a reply from Acoustic Sounds that the stampers got damaged.
The remix vinyl versions are pretty good. I wouldn't judge all of them based on a lossy Spotify listen.
I will give them a proper listen. Would you suggest the vinyl or CD?
@@ThePressingMatters Vinyl, especially the Gabriel era, would be best. CDs are said to be too compressed. SACDs are decent but they are OOP. They are cut from digital so you may still have the same opinion but they are readily available to try.
I might be inclined to try Duke or ATTWT, as I do not have originals of those any longer. Again I only heard these streaming and they seem loud and compressed (well they were compressed lol) Spotify will do that :-)
I've heard that Trepass on vinyl was a definite improvement. Any top recommendations on which was the favorite remix in the whole catalog? Are the pressings decent??
This might make for a very interesting video!
What number did you get mine came in last Friday
I'll check when I get home but I think it's 700 something? I'll get back on that

I did not open it yet or the selling england...
Sending out my turntable after the holidays for a rebuild and a 10 + week turnaround
@michaeldelorenzo6827 What a treat to play when you get it back!
@@michaeldelorenzo6827 I would suggest giving them a visual check at the very least, and if possible play everything through somehow. I had no issues at all with mine, but be aware that once your return window is closed, they may be less willing to replace anything if you discover anything amiss.
How nice it would be in 432 hz
🤣
Great review. Just one thing........stop banging that damn mic !!!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the review! I know, the mic needs to be better isolated from the desk. Thanks I'll see what I can do!
